Justin Leonard's Winning Clubs

After going winless for more than two years on the PGA Tour, Justin Leonard has now won the Valero Texas Open and the Stanford St. Jude Championship in the span of eight months.

After Leonard reunited with his former coach Randy Smith last season, he made a minor adjustment to his driver. To add distance, Leonard had Nike build him a SasQuatch Sumo 5000 driver with a 47-inch shaft, an inch longer than standard.

With the longer driver, Leonard averaged eight more yards per drive in Memphis last weekend than he did on the same course a year ago. But that longer driver can be tough to control; Leonard hit 15% fewer fairways this year.

It's also interesting to note that in a golf bag filled with Nike gear, Leonard carries a circa-2002 Callaway Big Bertha 4+ fairway wood. Many Tour players develop a deep faith in a particular fairway wood's ability to produce a specific distance, so they are loathe to find a replacement. According to his Web site, Leonard hits the club 245 yards.
