TaylorMade's 2010 PGA Championship commemorative logo

Posted at 12:30 PM by David Dusek

SHEBOYGAN, Wis. — As it has for years, TaylorMade has designed a special logo to appear on the golf bags and hats of the company's staff players at the PGA Championship.

TaylorMade-2010PGA-Logo_600

The top of the logo features a Scottish Blackface sheep. There are flocks of these sheep in the area, helping to make golfers feel like they are playing an old, traditional links course.

The gusts of wind coming from the sheep represent the breezes that come off Lake Michigan. The blue swirls below the "2010" symbolize the Straits Course's close connection with the lake itself. Eight holes are played directly along the shore and the lake is visible at some point on every hole.

The AA in the center of the logo stands of Anti-Aircraft. From 1949 to 1959, the land where Whistling Straits now sits was Camp Haven, a U.S. Anti-Aircraft training range. Machine guns and heavy artillery where fired over the lake from the base in training exercises, and the soldiers who took part in them wore an AA patch on their uniforms.

Ping brings new Scottsdale putters to Whistling Straits

Posted at 12:24 PM by David Dusek

Ping-Tomcat-Scottsdale-Putter_600x500 SHEBOYGAN, Wis. — K.J. Choi and Kenny Perry have recently been using new putters that are part of Ping's latest putter line, the Scottsdale series.

There are 14 different models in the new line, and first thing golfers will notice is the finish, which is much darker than previous Ping putters. That should help the maroon and white alignment aids and sightlines stand out more.

But Ping hopes it's the white insert found in face of all Scottsdale putters that will make them stand out.

Matt Rollins, a Ping PGA Tour rep, said, "We feel this is the best-feeling insert we've had in a putter in a while." He says the polymer insert is softer than the insert used in the i-Series putters, so Ping hopes that it will match well with today's mutli-layer golf balls.

The line features such Ping standards as the Anser and the B60, but there are some new headshapes too, including the blade-style TomCat (above) and the extreme perimeter-weighted Y Worry (below).

Look for the new Scottsdale series of putters to arrive in pro shops this fall with a price of about $140 to $180, depending on the model.

Tiger Woods says he played Monday's practice round with training putter

Posted at 11:10 AM by David Dusek

Editors' Note: At his press conference on Tuesday, Woods said that he had not changed putter grips Monday, as we reported earlier today. He said that his caddie, Steve Williams, accidentally put a training putter in the bag for Monday's practice round. Both the putter and the grip were different from the Scotty Cameron he uses in tournaments.

SHEBOYGAN, Wis. — Tiger Woods, who took 128 putts in four rounds last week en route to a tie for 78th at the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational, missed out on some much-needed practice with his tournament putter on Monday.

His caddie, Steve Williams, accidentally put a training putter in the bag for Monday's round. Woods said they were "too lazy" to go back and get the Scotty Cameron model that he usually uses in tournaments.

In the photos below, Woods is shown during Monday's practice round at Whistling Straits, left, and during Sunday's final round at the Bridgestone.

His normal putter, with the black Ping grip, was back in the bag on Tuesday.
