Sun Mountain outfitting United States Presidents Cup team

Posted at 11:24 PM by David Dusek | Categories: Presidents Cup, Ryder Cup, Sun Mountain

Matt-kuchar-rc_300x341 Sun Mountain announced Wednesday that it has been chosen as the official outerwear provider for the 2011 United States Presidents Cup team. This is the second consecutive time Sun Mountain has been chosen to outfit the team.

Last year, the company provided the 2010 United States Ryder Cup team with outerwear that became a big story at soggy Celtic Manor in Wales. After heavy rains on the first day, the American players abandoned their leaky rain suits and purchased another brand's suits in the merchandise tent.

After the Ryder Cup, Rick Reimers, Sun Mountain's founder and owner, said it was "highly unlikely that water came through the fabric." He suggested that the suits stuck to players during the heavy rain, making them feel wet; that water had run down players' necks and entered through the suits' cuffs; and that players had taken the suits on and off, exposing the inside to water.

Taking no chances, Sun Mountain says that it worked with the United States team to design jackets and pants that will protect players from wind and rain while remaining breathable. The new woven material being used also stretches in four directions so players can make an unencumbered swing. Sun Mountain says it is fully waterproof and has a water-repellant finish.

Members of the U.S. team will each get a full-zip rain jacket, short- and long-sleeve rain pullovers, short- and long-sleeve wind pullovers, rain pants and a bucket hat.

Like its agreement with the PGA of America for the Ryder Cup, the official gear made for the Presidents Cup team will not be made available to the public.
