Cobra unveils ‘Sunday Orange’ AMP driver

Posted at 10:39 AM by David Dusek

There was a time when drivers were like Model T Fords—you could have one in any color your liked as long as it was black. But with the release of a Sunday Orange version of its AMP driver, Cobra has added yet another hue to the rainbow of driver options.

Orange-Cobra-AMP_640

The special edition AMP driver, inspired by Cobra staffer Rickie Fowler's love for wearing orange on Sundays, comes standard with the same shaft Fowler uses—an orange Mitsubishi Diamana White Board. An orange Lamkin 3Gen grip completes the monochromatic look,

The 460-cc titanium head is identical to the previously released AMP driver and features a face that is slightly asymmetrical and designed to be more forgiving on shots hit high in the toe and low in the heel areas. The head can also be adjusted into one of three different face-angle settings using a torque wrench to help players create more of a draw or fade bias.

The Sunday Orange edition AMP will be available in July at select Cobra retailers. You can also buy the club on golf.com. The company is only making the club in right-hand models in 9.5° and 10.5° lofts and the price will be $499.

Inside look at Nike's U.S. Open swag bag

Posted at 3:35 PM by David Dusek

SAN FRANCISCO – Every week on the PGA Tour, manufacturers stuff the pros' lockers with things they'll need on the course. Balls, gloves, maybe a new umbrella or a hat. But at the majors, things get kicked up a few notches.

Nike presented its staff players at the U.S. Open with a special tote bag that contained a hoodie and a new pair of Nike Free running shoes.

Each golfer's hoodie was personalized with his name on the back of the left shoulder. Three stars were added to Tiger Woods's hoodie to acknowledge his three U.S. Open wins; Lucas Glover had one star.

Woods and Glover also had their names stitched into the tongue of their shoes.

If you've been watching the 2012 U.S. Open on TV, you may have spotted a few players with bright yellow headcovers on their putters. They are gifts from Scotty Cameron, Titleist's putter guru. Several staff players were given the commemorative headcovers at the start of the week.

Decoded: TaylorMade's symbol-filled 2012 U.S. Open logo

Posted at 9:39 PM by David Dusek

At each major championship, TaylorMade designs a new, symbol-filled logo to put on its staff players' bags, hats and accessories. Here's what the company's designers created for this year's U.S. Open.

2012-TaylorMade-US-Open-Logo_600

The "OFF THE AIR" and microphone, along with the "JF" and "55" at the top of the logo, all refer to Jack Fleck's upset of Ben Hogan at the 1955 U.S. Open at Olympic. NBC televised the tournament but signed off with Hogan, the four-time champion, in the clubhouse. While NBC switched to other programming, assuming Hogan had won, Fleck birdied the final hole and won an 18-hole playoff the next day.

The gold medal in the center of the logo pays homage to Olympic's status as the oldest athletic club in the United States. It was founded in 1861, and several of its members have competed in the Olympic Games.

In the background of the logo you can see the red cables and beams of the iconic Golden Gate Bridge, which is now 75 years old and visible from several locations on the course.

"Daly City" references the club's actual location, straddling the borders of the city of San Francisco and Daly City, Calif.

The four stars represent the four previous U.S. Opens that have been contested at the Olympic Club -- 1955, 1966, 1987 and 1998.

Finally, the "5" in pinstripes is for Joe DiMaggio. The Yankees' Hall of Fame center fielder and former Olympic Club member was born 25 miles north of this year's U.S. Open site in Martinez, Calif.
