Maui Jim's 'Ginger' Sunglasses: Functional on and off the course

Posted at 4:02 PM by Jessica Marksbury

Despite the inspiring success of sunglass-sporting players like Hunter Mahan, Ian Poulter and Paula Creamer, I've never been able to feel comfortable playing golf in sunglasses. The oversized styles I tend to favor either aren't suitable for the course or won't stay on my face during my swing—not a winning combination.

This past week, however, my feelings changed. I had a chance to test a pair of Maui Jim's new "Ginger" model, which debuted at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week SWIM in July. Though not designed specifically for golf, Ginger are lifestyle sunglasses that offer the perfect combination of fashion and plenty of useful technology for the course.

Ginger in Chocolate with HCL Bronze Lenses HQ-HS221-01B

The round frames complement just about every face shape, and the the oversize design helps protect your eyes from the wind and any airborne debris. I wore the Chocolate frames with HCL Bronze lenses (above) and I was thrilled with the clarity and contrast they provided—very helpful for reading greens.

With Maui Jim's "SuperThin" ST glass, the lenses are scratch-resistant and 20 percent thinner and lighter than conventional lenses. They provides 100 percent UV blockage and virtually glare-free sight. I barely noticed the weight of the glasses after wearing them for a full day.

In addition to Chocolate, the Ginger sunglasses are also available in Matte Sandstone (below, left), Charcoal (middle) and Mauve (right). There are also three lens tints to choose from: Neutral Gray, Maui Rose and HCL Bronze. $299; mauijim.com.

Odyssey ProType Black putters coming October 12

Posted at 9:47 AM by David Dusek

Earlier this year, Odyssey debuted ProType Tour putters based on feedback from hundreds of Tour players. Come fall, Odyssey will expand the line to include sleek ProType Black putters with black heads, shafts and grips.

Odyssey-ProType-BS-9_640

The forged clubheads have a rich PVD finish and are milled from 1025-carbon steel for a soft impact feel yet a crisp sound. A durable, powder coat "skin" is baked onto the steel shaft so you won't get wear marks while taking the club in and out of your bag. In addition, the half-wrap, paddle-style seamless grip offers a very tacky feel.

ProType Black putters come in three head styles; #2 (blade), #9 (mid mallet) and 2-Ball. The premium-priced flatsticks will be available October 12, with the blade and mid mallet selling for $269 and the 2-Ball for $299. – Rob Sauerhaft

Kentwool unveils 19th Hole sock collection at PGA Expo

Posted at 8:15 AM by Jessica Marksbury

Ever since the “world’s best golf sock” made its retail debut in 2010, Kentwool—a 169-year-old American textile company—has been a household name for amateurs and professionals alike.

Worn by PGA Tour standouts Bubba Watson, Matt Kuchar and Jonathan Byrd, Kentwool’s Low Profile, Tour profile and Tour standard models distinguish the brand by utilizing the company’s proprietary “WINDspun” merino wool yarn to ensure a blister-free experience on the golf course. The socks are also odor-resistant and possess thermoregulatory capabilities, which means feet stay cool when it’s hot and warm when it’s cold.

Now, you don’t even have to play golf to appreciate Kentwool’s 19th Hole Collection, which debuted earlier this week at the PGA Expo in Las Vegas. All of the comfort and technology of Kentwool’s previous sock models have been incorporated into a sleeker and more sophisticated “clubhouse casual” package; namely, argyle patterns and stripes in bright, vibrant colors.

KENTWOOL-19th Hole ARGYLE (navy)_hi-res KENTWOOL-19th Hole STRIPES (black-red)_hi-res KENTWOOL-19th Hole STRIPES (navy-pink)_hi-res

Depending on your team preferences, the socks can be enviable tailgate apparel on their own, but no matter what color pants you choose to wear to the course, they’re certainly perfect for a fun pop of color when you’re teeing your ball or reading a putt.

Colors include solid black, khaki and navy; argyle black, khaki and navy (above, left), and lots of stripe options: pink/green, black/red (above, middle), black/purple, black/green, navy/orange, navy/pink (above, right) and navy/light blue. Retailing for $28 per pair, the 19th Hole Collection is available in both men’s and women’s sizes at kentwoolsocks.com. The company even offers a 100 percent satisfaction guarantee and will send you a refund if you return your order within 30 days, so you can enjoy trying to “rock the socks” risk-free.

Inside TaylorMade's 2012 PGA Championship logo

Posted at 4:38 PM by David Dusek

As you watch the action from Kiawah Island this week, you'll see a unique symbol stamped onto the bags of TaylorMade staff players like Dustin Johnson, Jason Day and Justin Rose. It's a special logo designed by TaylorMade that's filled with secret meanings and created specifically for the 2012 PGA Championship. Here's your guide to decoding it:

TaylorMade-Logo_600x600

The orange and white trim at the top and bottom are the same colors commonly used in wind socks – they are a tribute to the  wind that often greatly affects play on the Ocean Course. The"1" at the bottom because this is signifies the first time that a major championship has been contested at Kiawah.

The triangular shape in the background is an arrowhead, an homage to the Kiawah, a Native American hunter-gatherer tribe that inhabited the island and sold it to the English in 1675.

At the logo’s center, a "W" is formed at the top of the teepee, another nod to the island's Native American past.. It stands for “Wanamaker,” the trophy that is given to the winner of the PGA Championship.

A large film reel is centered in the logo because Kiawah's Ocean Course was used during the filming of "The Legend of Bagger Vance" starring Will Smith and Matt Damon in 2000.

The crosshairs at the top of the film reel symbolize the 1991 Ryder Cup matches that have come to be known as, "The War on the Shore."
