Callaway Big Bertha V Series Driver Spotted at Firestone

Posted at 4:06 PM by Michael Chwasky | Categories: Callaway

Big-bertha-v-series_640A new Callaway driver, the Big Bertha V Series, showed up this week at the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational at Firestone Country Club in Akron, Ohio.

Though company representatives are officially mum on the new design, there's talk that the Big Bertha V Series is a lighter weight driver, similar to the FT OptiForce from a couple of years ago. It's safe to expect the new big stick will likely feature some of Callaway's premium technologies like a forged composite crown, "Hyper Speed" face (like the one used in the Big Bertha Alpha driver), and OptiFit adjustable hosel design.

Keep an eye out for the Big Bertha V Series in retail shops in the near future.

TaylorMade Releases Three New Putters

Posted at 3:52 PM by Michael Chwasky | Categories: Putters, TaylorMade

Taylormade-putters-v2_640
TaylorMade has expanded it's premium putter line with three new counterbalanced models - the Daddy Long Legs ($249), Spider Blade ($229) and Spider Mallet ($229). All three models feature a Tour-inspired color scheme which TaylorMade's staff players prefer as well as a matte black shaft. In contrast to last year's Spider and Daddy Long Legs models, each new puttter has a black leading edge with white compliments that highlight the rear weights. According to the company's Tour staff, this color scheme is easier to aim and simply looks better at address.

Of the three new models the Daddy Long Legs offers the highest level of stability, featuring an MOI of more than 8500. The unique Spider Blade, which has an MOI of 5200, is said to be approximately 50% more stable than the typical blade putter. All of the new counterbalanced models are built with a heavy steel body with tungsten heel and toe weights. Heavy weight, overlength grips that weigh as much as 130g help produce the added stability associated with a counterbalanced design. A surlyn, "Pure Roll," face insert further improves the performance of each putter by providing improved feel at impact and a smoother roll.

All three models are available in 35" and 38" standard lengths.

New Callaway Apex Utility Iron Spotted at Hoylake

Posted at 10:36 AM by Michael Chwasky | Categories: Callaway, Gary Woodland, Phil Mickelson, Ryo Ishikawa
Proto UT 1

The Open Championship is known for many things, including traditional links layouts, variable weather conditions and long-irons off the tee. When Tiger won at Hoylake in 2006, he dismantled the hard and fast track with long-iron stingers, and while this year's conditions appear to allow for a few more drivers, a ton of players -- including Tiger -- are still banging a variety of long and driving irons off the tee with regularity.

In light of this fact, Callaway has introduced a new Apex Utility iron at this week's Open Championship, and so far seven players are carrying it in their bag, including Gary Woodland, Branden Grace, Ryo Ishikawa, and Thomas Bjorn (Phil Mickelson experimented with it in practice rounds but hasn't gamed it yet).

Though the folks at Callaway aren't disclosing any details at the moment (the official release should be coming soon), it's pretty easy to see the resemblance to the company's existing X Utility Prototype, which features a relieved sole for improved performance from tough lies, a deep CG location for added forgiveness and a thin, forged face for increased ballspeed and enhanced feel. Safe to say the new Apex Utility contains many of the same features along with some improvements. Keep your eye on Callaway staffers this week and you should get a glimpse of one.

TaylorMade Unleashes Ultimate Driving Iron

Posted at 5:55 PM by Michael Chwasky | Categories: Justin Rose, TaylorMade

Taylormade-tp-udi_640
Just in time for the Open Championship TaylorMade has officially introduced the new Tour Preferred UDI ($199). Expected to be in the bags of a dozen or more TaylorMade staffers this week including Justin Rose, who carried the club for both of his recent wins, the UDI is aimed at players who want the distance of a hybrid club with the control and workability of an iron.

Tomo Bystedt, director of product creation at TaylorMade, comments:

We designed the Tour Preferred UDI for players seeking a versatile club that delivers incredible distance off the tee and a high-performance alternative from the fairway. The clean, traditional look at address inspires confidence and the Speed Pocket technology provides amazing distance and consistency.

The UDI produces plentiful distance thanks to a Carpenter Steel clubface and TaylorMade's Speed Pocket Technology, which increases ballspeed and reduces spin on shots struck low on the face. The club is available in 16, 18, and 20-degree models and comes standard with a KBS C-Taper Lite shaft.
