New Callaway Apex Utility Iron Spotted at Hoylake

Posted at 10:36 AM by Michael Chwasky | Categories: Callaway, Gary Woodland, Phil Mickelson, Ryo Ishikawa
Proto UT 1

The Open Championship is known for many things, including traditional links layouts, variable weather conditions and long-irons off the tee. When Tiger won at Hoylake in 2006, he dismantled the hard and fast track with long-iron stingers, and while this year's conditions appear to allow for a few more drivers, a ton of players -- including Tiger -- are still banging a variety of long and driving irons off the tee with regularity.

In light of this fact, Callaway has introduced a new Apex Utility iron at this week's Open Championship, and so far seven players are carrying it in their bag, including Gary Woodland, Branden Grace, Ryo Ishikawa, and Thomas Bjorn (Phil Mickelson experimented with it in practice rounds but hasn't gamed it yet).

Though the folks at Callaway aren't disclosing any details at the moment (the official release should be coming soon), it's pretty easy to see the resemblance to the company's existing X Utility Prototype, which features a relieved sole for improved performance from tough lies, a deep CG location for added forgiveness and a thin, forged face for increased ballspeed and enhanced feel. Safe to say the new Apex Utility contains many of the same features along with some improvements. Keep your eye on Callaway staffers this week and you should get a glimpse of one.

TaylorMade Unleashes Ultimate Driving Iron

Posted at 5:55 PM by Michael Chwasky | Categories: Justin Rose, TaylorMade

Taylormade-tp-udi_640
Just in time for the Open Championship TaylorMade has officially introduced the new Tour Preferred UDI ($199). Expected to be in the bags of a dozen or more TaylorMade staffers this week including Justin Rose, who carried the club for both of his recent wins, the UDI is aimed at players who want the distance of a hybrid club with the control and workability of an iron.

Tomo Bystedt, director of product creation at TaylorMade, comments:

We designed the Tour Preferred UDI for players seeking a versatile club that delivers incredible distance off the tee and a high-performance alternative from the fairway. The clean, traditional look at address inspires confidence and the Speed Pocket technology provides amazing distance and consistency.

The UDI produces plentiful distance thanks to a Carpenter Steel clubface and TaylorMade's Speed Pocket Technology, which increases ballspeed and reduces spin on shots struck low on the face. The club is available in 16, 18, and 20-degree models and comes standard with a KBS C-Taper Lite shaft.

Titleist Vokey Limited Edition Indigo Wedges

Posted at 12:47 PM by Michael Chwasky | Categories: Titleist, Wedges

Vokey_640
For a limited time (starting on July 16) Titleist Vokey Design SM5 wedges ($185) will be available with an Indigo finish. The unique PVD finish will wear over time but won't rust like raw finish wedges. Like other SM5 wedges the Indigo model features Spin Milled TX3 grooves and TX3 scorelines to produce more spin for enhanced control on both full shots and those around the greens.

"We've had the Indigo finish in WedgeWorks in the past, but only in the 400 Series. People went crazy for them," Vokey said. "We took them to the PGA Show this year and everyone was gravitating towards the Indigo finish and asking us when we would offer it in SM5. Even some of the Tour guys saw it and loved it, so we've decided to put out a limited release."

The iridescent blue wedges come in two mid-bounce grinds and eight loft, bounce, and grind combinations. The M grind features a crescent-shaped sole with a relieved heel, toe and trailing edge, while the S grind features a fuller sole with moderate heel relief.

The new Vokey SM5 Indigo wedges are available through Vokey.com and at select golf shops.

Scotty Cameron Putter Fitting Gallery Now Open to Public!

For all of you who dreamed of one day having the opportunity to get a custom fitted Scotty Cameron putter just like the pros use every week on Tour, your wish has finally come true. Yup, the brand new Scotty Cameron Gallery, located in Encinitas in Southern California, is now open to the public. At The Gallery, which is Cameron's first public putter fitting studio in the U.S., anyone who makes an appointment (and pays $350) will get a two-hour fitting session with a Cameron-trained fitter and have the same experience that Tour players have when they go to the nearby private Cameron Putter Studio. That experience, which Cameron calls "The Art of Putting," includes the use of a proprietary high-speed video analysis system (with nine camera angles) and an explanation of exactly how your stroke effects the movement of the putter and the ball. After your session you can order a custom-made Cameron putter (for an additional fee) that's perfectly fitted to your stroke.

The system we've developed is patented and it focuses on both the putter and the ball -- the ball is affected by the putter and the putter is affected by the player, so it's critical to see the entire picture. When someone comes in it's not a lesson but rather an attempt to get the player, putter, and ball to work together. To make this happen we answer all kinds of questions pertaining to putting - hand position, ball position, forward press, shaft angle, toe flow, loft, lie angle, grip size and shape, head weight, and a number of other critical aspects of set up, stroke, and putter design are analyzed. After a player understands how all these factors affect their putting they immediately develop a lot more confidence, which is one of the most important characteristics of a good putter. -Scotty Cameron

The Gallery is also a retail space where a wide variety of items, many of which are designed by Cameron himself, that will be available for purchase. These items include everything from luxury apparel and surfboards (shaped by Rob Machado), to wine and putting accessories. Also, Tour-used putters that sporadically come back from the Tour will be made available for purchase on a weekly basis. You can view more photos of The Gallery below.

To make an appointment for a putter fitting session go to www.scottycamerongallery.com or call the Scotty Cameron Gallery Concierge at (760) 230-6000.

Gallery address: 927 S. Coast Highway 101, Suite E-100, Encinitas, CA, 92024
