Cleveland 588 RTX 2.0 Wedges: A New Spin

Posted at 10:31 AM by Michael Chwasky | Categories: Cleveland

ClevelandWedge
The latest iteration of Cleveland’s famed 588 wedge is the company’s biggest wedge offering to date, including 120 options (comprised of clubhead model, bounce, loft, and sole grind). Available in blade and cavity back models, the 588 RTX 2.0 ($130) comes in three unique sole grinds that are geared to optimize performance for specific swing types and playing conditions. The Low Bounce grind is best for players with a shallow angle of attack or very firm conditions, while the Standard Bounce grind is aimed at those who have a “normal,” angle of attack and desire the highest level of versatility from a variety of playing conditions. The Full Sole grind offers the highest amount of effective bounce and is best for players with steep attack angles or those who tend to play in soft conditions.

The blade model is slightly more compact and is available in both Black Satin and Tour Stain finishes, while the cavity back is slightly larger and more forgiving and comes in only the Black Satin finish. Both models feature Tour Zip grooves that are approximately 8-percent deeper than the previous RTX design, making them even more effective at performing from thick or wet turf. A new Rotex face-milling pattern increases face roughness for even more spin and control.

Tour Edge Exotics E8 Driver: First LOOK!

Posted at 1:04 PM by Michael Chwasky | Categories: Drivers, Tour Edge

E8Driver
The new 460cc Exotics E8 driver ($299) is designed with a low and forward CG location, which promotes higher launch, lower spin, and faster ball speed and distance. The E8 also features a somewhat low-profile design, which further aids players who struggle to launch the ball high in the air (a critical characteristic for maximum distance).

A channel positioned behind the clubface in the sole of the club is deeper than it was on the previous XCG7 model, allowing for increased face flex at impact. This “Power Grid,” design is aimed at further enhancing the club’s ability to produce lower spin and faster ball speed. A variable face thickness design works with the “Power Grid,” to provide improved performance on shots struck away from the center of the face, particularly in the heel and toe areas as well as low on the clubface.

Adjustability is provided by a hosel that offers lofts ranging from 8.5-degrees to 12-degree in .5-degree increments, allowing for very exact custom tuning. The E8 can be further customized using an interchangeable 7g sole weight that can easily be swapped out to alter swingweight, ballflight, and feel. 5g, 10g, and 12g interchangeable weights are available in an optional weight kit.

The matte black E8 is available with a number of popular shafts including Fujikura Pro Series and Pro Tour, Aldila Rogue Silver and Black, and Mitsubishi Bassara E-Series models. As with all Tour Edge clubs the E8 comes with a lifetime warranty and a 30-day play guarantee.

E8DriverBeta
For players with higher clubhead speeds who prefer a driver with even lower spin and slightly lower launch, Tour Edge also offers the Exotics E8 Beta ($399) model. Featuring a 440cc deep-faced clubhead, the Beta is built with a slightly higher CG location than the standard model, which promotes a more penetrating trajectory and even lower spin rates. A beta titanium clubface insert not included in the standard model enhances feel at impact while also increasing ball speed.

Apex-mb-iron-back-2014

Built with significant input from Callaway's Tour Staff, the new Apex Muscleback ($1099) features the traditional look and feel that the best players in the world often prefer with a bit of playability mixed in. Considered to be Callaway's premium forged iron, the Apex Muscleback is "quad forged," from Carbon steel for the ultimate feedback at impact and also features an optimized sole camber that provides greater versatility than a standard muscleback design. The same wide spaced grooves used in the Apex Pro irons provide more consistent spin rates from varying turf conditions, making them easier to control for players who can handle a true blade.

Callaway Big Bertha V Series Driver Spotted at Firestone

Posted at 4:06 PM by Michael Chwasky | Categories: Callaway

Big-bertha-v-series_640A new Callaway driver, the Big Bertha V Series, showed up this week at the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational at Firestone Country Club in Akron, Ohio.

Though company representatives are officially mum on the new design, there's talk that the Big Bertha V Series is a lighter weight driver, similar to the FT OptiForce from a couple of years ago. It's safe to expect the new big stick will likely feature some of Callaway's premium technologies like a forged composite crown, "Hyper Speed" face (like the one used in the Big Bertha Alpha driver), and OptiFit adjustable hosel design.

Keep an eye out for the Big Bertha V Series in retail shops in the near future.

TaylorMade Releases Three New Putters

Posted at 3:52 PM by Michael Chwasky | Categories: Putters, TaylorMade

Taylormade-putters-v2_640
TaylorMade has expanded it's premium putter line with three new counterbalanced models - the Daddy Long Legs ($249), Spider Blade ($229) and Spider Mallet ($229). All three models feature a Tour-inspired color scheme which TaylorMade's staff players prefer as well as a matte black shaft. In contrast to last year's Spider and Daddy Long Legs models, each new puttter has a black leading edge with white compliments that highlight the rear weights. According to the company's Tour staff, this color scheme is easier to aim and simply looks better at address.

Of the three new models the Daddy Long Legs offers the highest level of stability, featuring an MOI of more than 8500. The unique Spider Blade, which has an MOI of 5200, is said to be approximately 50% more stable than the typical blade putter. All of the new counterbalanced models are built with a heavy steel body with tungsten heel and toe weights. Heavy weight, overlength grips that weigh as much as 130g help produce the added stability associated with a counterbalanced design. A surlyn, "Pure Roll," face insert further improves the performance of each putter by providing improved feel at impact and a smoother roll.

All three models are available in 35" and 38" standard lengths.
