This Week in Gear: Martin Kaymer and Sergio Garcia talk about white drivers

Posted at 4:25 PM by David Dusek

Sometimes you have to grind and hustle for weeks to get the story and other times you've just got to walk a few blocks. On Tuesday morning I made my way to the Golfsmith store in midtown Manhattan and was given a chance to talk with Martin Kaymer and Sergio Garcia. The two TaylorMade staff players where there as part of a 'White Out' promotion to hit some drives down 54th Street using an TaylorMade R11.

Here's what they had to say about the club and the whole concept of a white, adjustable driver.

Phil Mickelson's Win Means $1 Million Refunded to Golfers

Posted at 12:03 PM by David Dusek

AUGUSTA, Ga. – Phil Mickelson walked away Sunday evening from Augusta National with a third green jacket for his closet and a hefty check to hand to his accountant.

According to Golfsmith, more than 15,000 golfers who purchased a Callaway Big Bertha Diablo Edge, FT-Tour or FT-iZ driver also expect to get a check thanks to Phil's win.

A joint Golfsmith and Callaway promotion promised a refund on drivers purchased between March 18 and April 7 if Mickelson won the 2010 Masters.

A release sent by Golfsmith this morning said:

"In addition to wowing the galleries at Augusta for his third Masters Championship, Sunday, Phil Mickelson gave golfers across the country and internationally a great present to start the season," said Golfsmith President and CEO Marty Hanaka. "Phil's win is great for the game and wonderful for Golfsmith and our valued retail and online customers."

"We couldn’t be happier that Phil claimed his third green jacket and that thousands of Golfsmith customers now will start off the season with a new Callaway driver, free of charge," said Brian Groves, VP of US Marketing, Callaway Golf.  "Callaway drivers are the hottest clubs on the PGA Tour and have already won six tournaments in 2010, including the season’s first Major."

Because the organizers of the promotion took out a  'prize indemnity policy,' the money sent back to driver purchasers will actually come from an insurance company, not Golfsmith or Callaway.

Golfsmith promises free TaylorMade drivers if Sergio Garcia wins the Masters

Posted at 4:59 PM by Ryan Reiterman

If you weren't a fan of Sergio Garcia before today, you now have a good reason to join his fan club.

According to Advertising Age, anyone who buys a TaylorMade R7, R9 or Burner driver from Golfsmith by April 11 will get a full refund if -- and that's a big if -- Garcia wins the Masters.

The good news? Garcia played great in several big events last year, and he won the Players Championship. But he has yet to win a major, and his record at Augusta isn't stellar -- he's missed the cut three of the last four years. Still, according to the article, Golfsmith isn't taking any chances:

(Golfsmith) purchased an insurance policy against the odds of Mr. Garcia winning The Masters and so will not be giving away millions.
