Wedges are a tough fit on links courses

Quinney_birkdale_600x450SOUTHPORT, ENGLAND — The 137th Open Championship will be Jeff Quinney's second. As the winner of the U.S. Amateur at Baltusrol in 2000, the Oregonian not only won a really cool trophy, but also a spot in the field at Royal Lytham & St. Annes in 2001.

To prepare for his trip across the pond, Quinney asked Titleist's wedge guru, Bob Vokey, to make him a few wedges suitable for use on the sandy links of Royal Birkdale.

According to Vokey, it's tricky to create the perfect wedge for an Open venue because you need to make a compromise on bounce. The sand in the bunkers at courses like Birkdale is very light, so a sand wedge with a healthy amount of bounce is ideal. However, the fairways tend to be rock hard so too much bounce gets in the way and cause poor contact.

After practicing with both sets of wedges, Quinney decided to stick with his old Vokey Design 200 Series 54° and 60° wedges instead of putting the new ones in the bag. While the sand is still very light, last week's rains have softened the fairways slightly, so Quinney feels his normal wedges should do the job.
