TaylorMade Unleashes Ultimate Driving Iron

Posted at 5:55 PM by Michael Chwasky

Taylormade-tp-udi_640
Just in time for the Open Championship TaylorMade has officially introduced the new Tour Preferred UDI ($199). Expected to be in the bags of a dozen or more TaylorMade staffers this week including Justin Rose, who carried the club for both of his recent wins, the UDI is aimed at players who want the distance of a hybrid club with the control and workability of an iron.

Tomo Bystedt, director of product creation at TaylorMade, comments:

We designed the Tour Preferred UDI for players seeking a versatile club that delivers incredible distance off the tee and a high-performance alternative from the fairway. The clean, traditional look at address inspires confidence and the Speed Pocket technology provides amazing distance and consistency.

The UDI produces plentiful distance thanks to a Carpenter Steel clubface and TaylorMade's Speed Pocket Technology, which increases ballspeed and reduces spin on shots struck low on the face. The club is available in 16, 18, and 20-degree models and comes standard with a KBS C-Taper Lite shaft.

Justin Rose Tries TaylorMade SLDR Mini Driver at Augusta

Justin Rose got to Augusta National early this year to prepare for the first major of 2014. The 2013 U.S. Open champion is looking for his second major title this week, and he'll try anything to improve his chances, including possibly putting the new TaylorMade SLDR Mini driver in his bag.

Rose instagrammed a photo collage of the club with the following caption: "Been working with the amazing NEW @taylormadegolf #Mini driver this week, may have the #SLDR and #Mini driver in the bag at Augusta. Will keep you posted during the week. #LoftUp."

The new TaylorMade club is 260cc as compared to the 460cc SLDR driver and the 150cc SLDR 3-wood, and comes with a 43.5" shaft. It is designed as a 3-wood replacement for the player that desires the distance of a driver but the accuracy of a 3-wood off the tee and was first spotted on the range at this year's WGC-Cadillac Championship.

You can learn more about the SLDR Mini in the video below:

The TaylorMade SLDR Mini driver can be pre-ordered here for $279.99.

Special Edition: Justin Rose TaylorMade Spider Blade putter

Posted at 2:47 PM by Michael Chwasky

Tmade-spider-blade-justin-rose_640
In celebration of Justin Rose's impressive U.S. Open win at Merion last month, TaylorMade is offering a limited run (99 in all) of exact replicas of his Spider Blade putter ($299.99). Every replica is made to Rose's exact specs (37 5/8" in length) and fitted with a black Ghost Tour shaft and counterbalanced grip that is normally only available to members of TaylorMade's Tour staff. The clubhead of each putter is numbered (1 through 99) and stamped with Rose's "JR," logo.

The Spider Blade features a 260g steel body and 3.5g surlyn face insert for enhanced feel at impact. A 3g polycarbonate sole plate and 82g tungsten weight screws in the heel and toe areas of the clubhead increase MOI and stability on off center hits. A 130g grip, which is about twice as heavy as a standard grip, creates counterbalancing which further increases MOI and provides an even greater amount of stability throughout the stroke.

Garcia, Johnson and Rose's British Open apparel

Posted at 10:14 AM by David Dusek

If you were hoping to see Sergio Garcia once again wear an all-yellow outfit at the Biritish Open as a tribute to the Tour de France, sorry, you're going to be disappointed. Here is what El Nino and Dustin Johnson, two of Adidas Golf's flagship players, will be wearing this week, as well as the Ashworth apparel slated for Justin Rose.

Solving the riddles of TaylorMade's 2012 British Open logo

Posted at 12:59 PM by David Dusek

At the majors, TaylorMade's staff players are presented with new bags, hats, and accessories that are adorned with a commemorative logo. I always ask players what the various components of the logo mean, but they usually have no idea. Below is the logo you'll see on the bags of players such as Justin Rose, Darren Clarke and Dustin Johnson this week, along with its hidden meanings.

British-Open-Logo_600There is a violet on the top of the crown at the top of the logo. It represents Violet Talbot, who, being a close friend of Her Majesty Queen Mary, was able to help the course obtain its royal designation in 1926.

The 10 beads adorning each side of the crown symbolize the 10 previous British Opens that have been played at Royal Lytham and St. Annes. The three stars at the base of the crown are from the Clifton family's coat of arms. Several members of the Clifton family have been presidents of the club and Lady Eleanor Cecily Clifton donated a gold medal in 1889 to be presented each year to the club champion.

The red banner running through the logo represents the Challenge Belt, the original prize for winning the British Open until it was given permanently to three-time champion Young Tom Morris in 1870.

The main image within the logo is the Lytham Windmill, and the life preserver in the center of the windmill represents the Royal National Lifeboat Institution of St. Anne’s. It was founded in 1824 and according to TaylorMade, the lifeboats have saved more than 137,000 lives through November 2006.

The windmill’s three windows in the windmill  represent the first hole of Royal Lytham and St. Anne’s, the only par-3 opening hole among the courses in the British Open rota.

The TL at the base of the windmill stands for Tom Lehman, who won the tournament at Royal Lytham and St. Anne’s in 1996.
