Rickie Fowler's 2014 Masters Puma Look

Posted at 1:24 PM by Michael Chwasky | Categories: Masters, Puma, Rickie Fowler

The Masters is known for its own style, which normally includes a lot of genteel spring colors mixed with green and gold.

Rickie Fowler is also known for his own SoCal style with flat brim hats, bright colors, and matching shoes.

At this year's Masters, Puma has Rickie decked out in a mixture of designs, some a bit subdued, some not at all. Check out Rickie's clothing lineup for next week including the par-3 contest on Wednesday and some Oklahoma State orange for Sunday and think about which look you'd like to add to your closet. Or not.

Ping offers driver alternative with new adjustable Rapture 3-wood

There's a lot of talk about playing drivers with more loft these days, and for good reason. The key to producing maximum distance off the tee is launching the ball high with a low amount of spin, which for some players isn't easy to do with a 9- or 10-degree driver. To solve this problem Ping designers came up with the new Rapture 3-wood ($495).

With a shaft length (43.5") and clubhead size (219cc) remeniscent of old-school drivers the Rapture 3-wood features a tall, beta titanium face that is said to be 30 percent stronger than standard titainum clubfaces, allowing for extreme variable face thickness, more forgiveness, and faster ballspeeds. Approximately 25% of the clubhead mass is positioned in a tungsten sole plate, moving the CG to an extremely low position for improved launch and lower spin rates. Though the standard loft of the club is 13-degrees it can be quickly adjusted plus or minus a half degree for more acccurate tuning.

“The weighting properties of titanium and tungsten provide our engineers a lot of opportunities to improve performance,” said John A. Solheim, Ping Chairman & CEO. “The high-strength beta-titanium material allowed us to really focus on creating a hotter face that yields ball speeds and distance unlike any we’ve seen in fairway woods. The tungsten positions the weight extremely low so we can optimize the CG position. It has a taller face and deeper head profile, so golfers will have complete confidence with the Rapture. We think golfers will really appreciate this unique combination of technology to improve their performance. It’s extremely long off the tee. We’re excited to get it in golfers’ hands.”

The Ping Rapture 3-wood will be available at retail starting April 1st.

Available starting March 27th, Nike Golf is offering three limited edition shoes that will be worn by Nike athletes at the Masters. Each of the models feature white uppers and a variety of colors on the outsoles, Swooshes, laces and eyelets. The limited edition models are available at select retailers and on Nike.com.

Nike TW '14 Limited Edition ($180)

The shoe is the result of a collboration between Tiger and Nike's footwear design team and features a natural-motion engineered outsole that is designed to closely mimic the natural motion of the foot. Dynamic Flywire technology helps provide further stability and mobility. You've seen Tiger wear these plenty of times, but not in this color combo.

Nike Lunar Control Limited Edition ($160)

Features include Nike's full-length Lunarlon tehnology for extra comfort and support and Nike Flywire, which wraps the midfoot to the heel for improved stability.

Nike Lunar Clayton Limited Edition ($250)

Waterproof leather uppers are combined with lighweight Lunarlon technology to provide a traditional look and modern performance. The leather uppers are connected to the outsole with a leather welt to guarantee no water can penetrate the shoe.

Callaway's new Edge Set ($699/steel, $799/graphite) provides aspiring players with an impressive combination of playability and forgiveness in a modern design. Featuring three hybrids (4, 5, 6) three irons (7, 8, 9), and three wedges (PW, AW, SW), the Edge Set is designed with an optimized progression that bridges distance gaps effectively without missing a beat. The hybrids in the set feature a very low CG location for higher launch angles and extreme forgiveness, while the irons are built with a hollow cavity that makes them just as easy to hit as the hybrids. According to reps from Callaway, the Edge Set is comprised of the most forgiving irons and hybrids the company currently produces.

Available with True Temper Speed Step 85 shafts or Edge Hybrid graphite shafts.

First Look: Callaway X2 Hot Deep Fairway Woods

Phil Mickelson virtually sealed last year’s British Open with a brilliant pair of 3-wood shots to reach Muirfield’s par-5 17th in two during the final round. He smashed those shots using Callaway’s X Hot 3Deep (13°) 3-wood. Now comes a more complete offering called X2 Hot Deep, which consists of the 2Deep (12.5°), 3Deep (14.5°) and 5Deep (18.5°).

These clubs feature a thinner, lighter Carpenter 455 forged cup face than in the X Hot Deep for faster ball speeds (on shots struck low on the face, in particular). A higher MOI contributes to more overall forgiveness and greater shot-to-shot consistency while a flatter roll radius causes shots to launch higher from fairway lies. Phil Mickelson, in fact, is one of the players sporting the X2 Hot 2Deep on Tour. By comparison, this stick is 20cc larger than the X Hot 3Deep with a higher MOI and a bigger face. They are $230 each.

First Look: TaylorMade Ghost Spider Si Putter

The newest member of TaylorMade's Ghost Spider family, the Si ($199) is an extremely-forgiving high MOI mallet with a counterbalanced design. Features include a Surlyn face insert as well as a 380-gram clubhead and 130-gram, 15-inch long grip that combine to provide extreme stability through the stroke. The counterbalanced design with significantly more weight in the grip area of the club has already been validated on Tour numerous times, as Justin Rose won the 2013 US Open with Ghost Spider Blade. Other TaylorMade staffers like Lucas Glover, Rory Sabbatini, Fred Funk and Retief Goosen have already had the Ghost Spider Si in their bags this season.

"The player excitement on Tour over counterbalanced putters drove the creation of the Ghost Spider Si,” said Tomo Bystedt, TaylorMade Golf’s Director of Product Creation for Irons, Putters and Wedges. “It's the perfect putter for players who want the benefits of a high MOI head and counterbalanced stroke stability in a clean, elegant design."

The Ghost Spider Si comes in 35- and 38-inch models and will be available starting Friday, March 14.

First Look: PowerBilt Air Force One DFX Driver

Posted at 2:35 PM by Michael Chwasky |

Powerbilt-driver_640
A storied name in the world of golf gear has returned with a new big stick with some impressive technology. PowerBilt's Air Force One DFX driver ($299.99) features a deep face (DFX stands for "Deep Face Extreme) that is designed to hold the ball a bit longer at impact for lower spin and longer distance. The performance of the clubface is further enhanced by PowerBilt's "Nitrogen Charged," technology, which uses nitrogen in the clubhead to reinforce the clubface without adding additional weight.

"We reduced the nitrogen pressure to 80 pounds, for better impact feel," says Ross Kvinge, President of PowerBilt. "This new amount of nitrogen generates a tremendous trampoline effect for increased ball speed. In fact, now the trampoline effect is up to the USGA maximum limit. Shot dispersion is also the tightest ever in our drivers. And by adding 6 grams low and forward in the clubhead, we moved the CG lower and more forward than in any other Air Force One driver. We did this to appease our clubfitters who requested a better smash factor. I can confidently say that this is the most solid driver we have ever produced."

Other features include a forged titanium body and titanium cup face, and aerodynamic clubhead shaping for faster swingspeeds. The Air Force One DFX is available in regular and Tour Series models in 8.5-, 9.5, 10.5, and 12-degree lofts.

TaylorMade 'Mini' SLDR Seen at Doral

Posted at 3:47 PM by Michael Chwasky | Categories: TaylorMade

Mini-sldr_640

If you're a player who longs for a slightly smaller driver, or if your 3-wood is the best club in your bag, you might be interested in TaylorMade's new "mini" SLDR that's being shown to Tour players at Doral this week.

Though the folks at TM aren't saying much about the club yet it appears to be an alternate driving club, sort of like an old 2-wood. With an obviously smaller size than even the 430 SLDR driver (it looks to be 300cc or less) and a slightly shorter shaft, the new "mini" might work very well for players who need a bit more loft (the one on Tour is a 12-degree) and more controllable length.

More info coming soon...

Titleist Makes Cactus-Stamped Wedge for Victor Dubuisson

Posted at 3:46 PM by Mike Walker | Categories: Titleist, Victor Dubuisson, Wedges

Wedge_1Victor Dubuisson's new cactus wedge from Titleist.

We all know that a "sandy" is getting up and down from the sand, but what do you call getting up and down when your ball is under a cactus plant? We're not sure but it's definitely a French word.

France's next great golfer Victor Dubuisson lost the Accenture Match Play Championship final to Jason Day after 23 holes at Arizona's Dove Mountain but he gained a legion of fans with his amazing short game in the extra holes with two incredible up-and-downs from the desert brush. As a reward, Titleist gave Dubuisson a special cactus-stamped wedge to Doral this week.

Dubuisson was modest this week when discussing those shots at Dove Mountain, calling them "50-50."

"I was a kid, I used to practice a lot my short game," Dubuisson said. "But those two chips I managed to do two weeks ago, you know, it could have just stayed in the rocks or in the bush. It was great but it was like 50-50, it was not really my control."
