TaylorMade Unleashes Ultimate Driving Iron

Posted at 5:55 PM by Michael Chwasky | Categories: Justin Rose, TaylorMade

Taylormade-tp-udi_640
Just in time for the Open Championship TaylorMade has officially introduced the new Tour Preferred UDI ($199). Expected to be in the bags of a dozen or more TaylorMade staffers this week including Justin Rose, who carried the club for both of his recent wins, the UDI is aimed at players who want the distance of a hybrid club with the control and workability of an iron.

Tomo Bystedt, director of product creation at TaylorMade, comments:

We designed the Tour Preferred UDI for players seeking a versatile club that delivers incredible distance off the tee and a high-performance alternative from the fairway. The clean, traditional look at address inspires confidence and the Speed Pocket technology provides amazing distance and consistency.

The UDI produces plentiful distance thanks to a Carpenter Steel clubface and TaylorMade's Speed Pocket Technology, which increases ballspeed and reduces spin on shots struck low on the face. The club is available in 16, 18, and 20-degree models and comes standard with a KBS C-Taper Lite shaft.

Titleist Vokey Limited Edition Indigo Wedges

Posted at 12:47 PM by Michael Chwasky | Categories: Titleist, Wedges

Vokey_640
For a limited time (starting on July 16) Titleist Vokey Design SM5 wedges ($185) will be available with an Indigo finish. The unique PVD finish will wear over time but won't rust like raw finish wedges. Like other SM5 wedges the Indigo model features Spin Milled TX3 grooves and TX3 scorelines to produce more spin for enhanced control on both full shots and those around the greens.

"We've had the Indigo finish in WedgeWorks in the past, but only in the 400 Series. People went crazy for them," Vokey said. "We took them to the PGA Show this year and everyone was gravitating towards the Indigo finish and asking us when we would offer it in SM5. Even some of the Tour guys saw it and loved it, so we've decided to put out a limited release."

The iridescent blue wedges come in two mid-bounce grinds and eight loft, bounce, and grind combinations. The M grind features a crescent-shaped sole with a relieved heel, toe and trailing edge, while the S grind features a fuller sole with moderate heel relief.

The new Vokey SM5 Indigo wedges are available through Vokey.com and at select golf shops.

Scotty Cameron Putter Fitting Gallery Now Open to Public!

For all of you who dreamed of one day having the opportunity to get a custom fitted Scotty Cameron putter just like the pros use every week on Tour, your wish has finally come true. Yup, the brand new Scotty Cameron Gallery, located in Encinitas in Southern California, is now open to the public. At The Gallery, which is Cameron's first public putter fitting studio in the U.S., anyone who makes an appointment (and pays $350) will get a two-hour fitting session with a Cameron-trained fitter and have the same experience that Tour players have when they go to the nearby private Cameron Putter Studio. That experience, which Cameron calls "The Art of Putting," includes the use of a proprietary high-speed video analysis system (with nine camera angles) and an explanation of exactly how your stroke effects the movement of the putter and the ball. After your session you can order a custom-made Cameron putter (for an additional fee) that's perfectly fitted to your stroke.

The system we've developed is patented and it focuses on both the putter and the ball -- the ball is affected by the putter and the putter is affected by the player, so it's critical to see the entire picture. When someone comes in it's not a lesson but rather an attempt to get the player, putter, and ball to work together. To make this happen we answer all kinds of questions pertaining to putting - hand position, ball position, forward press, shaft angle, toe flow, loft, lie angle, grip size and shape, head weight, and a number of other critical aspects of set up, stroke, and putter design are analyzed. After a player understands how all these factors affect their putting they immediately develop a lot more confidence, which is one of the most important characteristics of a good putter. -Scotty Cameron

The Gallery is also a retail space where a wide variety of items, many of which are designed by Cameron himself, that will be available for purchase. These items include everything from luxury apparel and surfboards (shaped by Rob Machado), to wine and putting accessories. Also, Tour-used putters that sporadically come back from the Tour will be made available for purchase on a weekly basis. You can view more photos of The Gallery below.

To make an appointment for a putter fitting session go to www.scottycamerongallery.com or call the Scotty Cameron Gallery Concierge at (760) 230-6000.

Gallery address: 927 S. Coast Highway 101, Suite E-100, Encinitas, CA, 92024

PING G30 Complete Line - FIRST LOOK!

Posted at 9:59 AM by Michael Chwasky | Categories: Ping

PING has a quick and easy answer for getting the distance you desire - with no swing changes needed.

The entire PING G30 line, including two drivers, fairway woods, hybrids, and irons, is aimed at providing players with more distance and accuracy while maintaining plenty of forgiveness. This approach begins with the G30 driver ($385), which features a CG location that is lower and deeper in the clubhead than the previous G25, providing a higher MOI and more stability on off center hits. This alteration is accomplished through the use of a lighter and stronger face material that moves 4 grams of weight away from the clubface. A high balance point shaft also contributes to a higher MOI by allowing for a head weight that is 5 grams heavier than that of the G25.

To balance the added forgiveness with more distance, aerodynamic ridges (PING calls them PingG30“turbulators,”) are positioned in the crown of the clubhead. This unique design feature helps increase swingspeed by helping the clubhead move more efficiently through the air. Other features of the G30 include a new hosel design that allows for loft adjustments of up to 1-degree (in half degree increments) in either direction, and sole louvers that improve impact sound while also saving additional weight in the clubhead.

The G30 is available in a standard model that comes in 9- and 10.5-degree lofts as well as a SF (Straight Flight) TEC model that is available in 10- and 12-degree lofts. The SF TEC has more weight positioned in the heel of the clubhead and also has a lighter swingweight than the standard model, making it a bit easier to square at impact (a helpful characteristic for those who tend to lose the ball to the right).

New fairway woods ($275) and hybrids ($242.50) are also included in the G30 lineup. The fairway woods (available in 14.5-, 18-, and 21-degrees) are built with thin Carpenter 475 steel clubfaces that increase ball speed due to more flex at impact. Adjustable hosels allow for loft adjustments up to 1-degree in half-degree increments while high balance point shafts increase head weights by around 3 grams for a higher MOI and increased forgiveness. CG locations are progressive – farther back in lower lofted models and more forward in higher lofted models – for optimized trajectory.

G30 hybrids (available in 17-, 19-, 22-, 26-, and 30-degrees) provide a more square appearance at address than G25 hybrids and contain most of the same design features as the G30 fairway woods but have non-adjustable hosels.

The new G30 irons ($799 steel, $899 graphite) Pingg30iron
are built with a thinner clubface than the previous G25 model to increase ball speed and distance without sacrificing feel (due to an improved elastomer insert in the cavity). Slightly stronger lofts and longer progressive shaft lengths also contribute to increased distance - when all the elements are combined the G30s are between three and seven yards longer than the G25. In addition, longer blade lengths and an undercut cavity along the bottom half of the club combine to lower the CG for increased launch and improved MOI for more stability at impact. A new sole design that has 2.5-degrees more bounce than the G25 improves turf interaction and promotes more consistent contact from all types of lies.

New Nike Lunar Waverly, Lunar Mont Royal Golf Shoes

Posted at 11:03 AM by Michael Chwasky | Categories: Golf Shoes, Nike

Nike-lunar-shoes_640
Nike Golf has added two new models to their Versatility footwear family, the Lunar Waverly ($140) and the Lunar Mont Royal ($100), both of which are designed to be equally comfortable on and off the course.

“The Lunar Waverly and Lunar Mont Royal were really inspired by classic Nike footwear styles, and we adapted those designs for athletes who want a golf shoe with versatile appeal,” says Carl Madore, Nike Golf Innovation Design Lead. “These are shoes with incredible performance technology that are great for playing 18 holes or wearing before or after the round, too. You can hit balls at the driving range on your lunch break without ever changing your shoes. These styles are modeled after some of Nike’s first shoes but modernized to perform specifically for our sport.”

The Lunar Waverly (pictured) was created through a concerted effort between Nike Golf and Nike Sports Research Lab and features waffle traction lugs that are reminiscent of Nike's earliest shoes. Other features include Dynamic Flywire technology that provides outstanding lateral support, premium waterproof full-grain leather uppers, anti-microbial cork sock liners, and full-length Lunarlon foam cushioning.

The Lunar Mont Royal is a bit of an homage to the Nike Montreal, which was introduced in 1975 as Steve Prefontaine's signature shoe. Featuring the same famous color pattern and running-style design as Prefontaine's model, the Mont Royal is built with Lunarlon foam in the heel for extreme cushioning and a traditional Nike waffle sole for excellent grip in a variety of turf conditions.

Both models are available July 1st.

New Titleist 915 Driver Spotted at Congressional

Posted at 11:28 AM by Michael Chwasky | Categories: Drivers, Titleist

Titleist-915-driver_640
Some Titleist staff players have been testing the new 915 D2 and D3 drivers on the range at Congressional CC this week in preparation for the inevitable replacement of the current 913 series. Though the folks at Titleist are keeping tight-lipped about the new product line it's evident from the photos that a major design change has taken place.

Check out the slot in the sole right behind the clubface -- if this looks familiar it's because a similar design has been used by TaylorMade and Adams in recent years to produce better ballspeed and lower spin on shots struck low on the clubface, right where most recreational players tend to miss. Assume that this design feature will make the 915 series more forgiving and playable than the 913 series drivers, which were excellent in their own right.

Another feature of the 915 series appears to be similar adjustable hosel technology to the 913 series, which allows for independent loft and lie tuning. Expect a 460cc D2 model as well as a slightly smaller, more pear-shaped D3 model. If you're interested in Titleist's new drivers you can look for them to be available sometime in the late summer or fall.

Michelle Wie's Winning Gear at 2014 U.S. Women's Open

Posted at 11:27 AM by Michael Chwasky | Categories: Michelle Wie, Nike, Winner's Bag

Wie_640
Michelle Wie's breakthrough at the U.S. Women's Open didn't come without drama. After taking a drop on the 16th hole that lead to a double bogey, she headed to the 17th tee with a slimmer-than-slim one stroke lead over #1 player in the world Stacy Lewis. Lewis, who shot a final round 66 to post even par for the tournament, was hitting balls on the range in preparation for an impending playoff when Wie drained a 15-footer for birdie on the par-3 17th, extending her lead to two shots with one hole to play. After a stress-free par on the 18th, Wie walked away with her first major championship which, by the looks of her game, could be the first of many. Here's a complete list of her winning gear from Pinehurst:
