Rory McIlroy on how the Nike VR X3X Toe Wedge helped him win the BMW PGA and his ideal driver-ball combo

Posted at 12:08 PM by Michael Chwasky

X3xRory McIlroy is known as one of the greatest drivers in the game, but his short game was the key to his win at the BMW PGA Championship on Sunday, when he overcame a seven-shot deficit in the final round.

During his back-nine 32, McIroy chipped in for birdie on the par-3 10th, got up-and-down from the short side to save par on the par-3 14th, got up-and-down from the greenside rough for birdie on 17 and then got up-and-down from a bunker on 18 for another birdie and a two-shot lead. McIlroy made all these shots with a club that wasn't even in his bag at the start of the year: his 59-degree Nike X3X toe-sweep wedge [photo, right].

The unorthodox wedge -- with a wide sole near the toe and a narrow sole width at the heel -- looked a little unusual to the traditional-minded McIlroy when he first saw it, but he tried it out at Quail Hollow and loved how it played out of the rough.

"I'm pretty confident and can play all the shots," McIlroy said, "but [the toe sweep] is easier to play on some shots when you need to work really hard to keep the club open. This club really slides through the thick grass and that really gives me confidence to stay aggressive when I miss the green."

VIDEO: How Nike's Flop-Friendy Toe Sweep Wedge Works

McIlroy credited his new wedge for his up-and-downs from the rough on Sunday and also his bunker shot on 18.

"I’ve always been someone with not a lot of bounce to my wedges but I think it’s helped my bunker play as well," he said.

During the week McIlroy averaged more than 294-yards in driving distance. He said that his ideal driver-ball combination is "something that launches the ball at the right angle with good ball speed and a good spin rate." He doesn't try to lower his spin rate because that spin helps him find the fairway.

"I know some guys want less spin," McIlroy said, "but for me a little extra spin keeps the flight tight for me and with my high swing speed I can get away with it."

Known as a superlative feel player, McIlroy also talked about how his ball -- the Nike RZN Black -- feels at impact.

"It feels solid, and it feels softer than the ball I was playing last year," McIlroy said. "It performs well in the wind and rarely gets touched by the wind. Days with a little wind like yesterday you don’t have to aim too much off-line because the wind won’t move it."

Nike Scripts Rory McIlroy's 2014 Masters Apparel

Posted at 2:24 PM by Michael Chwasky

If you've been waiting with anticipation to see what Rory will wear at Augusta, the wait's over. According to the folks at Nike, Rory will be wearing one of their "key styles," of the season, the Lightweight Innovation Color polo ($75), all four days. Features of the shirt include bonded shoulder seams, laser-cut armholes, placket, and pocket, and perforated collar for enhanced breathability and cooling.

“These polos are really lightweight and comfortable,” says McIlroy. “I like that I know how it’s going to feel day to day, and there’s no distracting seams or material – I can just focus on my game.”

His other gear will include Nike's Modern Tech Pant ($80), Tour Mesh Cap ($30), Modern Plaque Belt ($50), and Lunar Control shoes ($200). Of course, Rory will also carry a full bag of Nike clubs including a VRS STR8-FIT driver and RZN Black golf ball.

McIlroy riding new Nike gear to late-season resurgence

Posted at 3:16 PM by Kevin Cunningham

Rory McIlroy appears to be turning his game around following a disappointing, winless season in 2013.

First there was the final-round 67 to finish T2 at the Korea Open. Then came the one-shot victory over Tiger in an exhibition match at Mission Hills in China, followed by an impressive opening-round 65 at the WGC-HSBC Champions that gave him the first-round lead.

So who or what is responsible for Rory's late-season resurgence? While no one can say for sure, two newcomers to his golf bag could have something to do with it.

McIlroy has been using a new Nike prototype VR_S Covert Tour 2.0 driver of late, along with a new yet-to-be released softer Nike RZN golf ball.

Nike is keeping mum on the details of the new longstick and ball until late November, but you can see Rory's Covert 2.0 in the photo above.

Were Rory McIlroy's new Nike clubs spotted in Dubai?

Posted at 10:39 AM by David Dusek

Nike is expected to introduce Rory McIlroy as a staff player on Monday in Abu Dhabi, so it's not surprising that images of his 2013 gear are starting to leak.

GolfCentralDaily.com posted two images of Nike clubs with "RORS" stamped on them. According to the site, the photos were taken at the Els Club in Dubai, where McIlroy was practicing. There is no way to verify the authenticity of these images, but if real, they provide an early glimpse for equipment junkies of the clubs Rory might be playing next week.

Rory McIlroy and Titleist parting ways at end of year

Posted at 8:30 AM by Golf.com

P1-Rory-TitleistTitleist announced on Tuesday morning that its relationship with Rory McIlroy will not extend beyond Dec. 31. Will a move to Nike be next?

McIlroy, 23, has played Titleist equipment since turning pro at the age of 18, but reports of a 10-year, $250 million deal with Nike have been circulating in the golf press. So far, neither Nike nor McIlroy has confirmed those rumors, and McIlroy refused to discuss them on his recent trip to Shanghai.

Titleist and McIlroy seemed to be parting on good terms.

"Our goal has been to provide Rory with the best equipment and service that would help him be the best player he could possibly be," Wally Uihlein, chief executive officer of Acushnet, said in today's statement. "He has been a great ambassador for the Titleist and FootJoy brands, and in turn, we are proud of how our equipment has contributed to his success. We wish Rory all the best, both personally and professionally, going forward."

McIlroy thanked Uihlein and the Titleist and FootJoy staff and added: "I have enjoyed five very exciting and successful years with the company and I will always appreciate the contribution Titleist has made in helping me become the player I am today."

Inside look at Rory McIlroy's U.S. Open putter

Posted at 12:13 PM by David Dusek

RoryMcIlroyPutter-1 Gear heads probably recognized the putter Rory McIlroy used during the U.S. Open as a Scotty Cameron for Titleist Studio Select Newport, but the new champ's flatstick has a few special features that make it unique.

The obvious feature is the finish. While the Studio Select putters available in stores are finished in a brushed chrome, McIlroy's prototype has a darker, chromatic bronze finish with black paint fill in the back instead of the standard red.

The "CAMICO" stamped into the heel portion of the flange stands for "Cameron & Company." The "GSS" on the toe stands for German Stainless Steel.

The standard Studio Select putters are made from 303 stainless steel. According to Cameron, German stainless steel is one of the best materials to use for making putters because it has such good feel, but it's too expensive to use for mass-produced putters. He makes "GSS" putters only for tour pros like McIlroy, Nick Watney and Dustin Johnson.

RoryMcIlroyPutter-2 While he has experimented with several different putters over the past few seasons, McIlroy's go-to putter has been a Scotty Cameron Newport Fastback. However, according to the Team Titleist blog, "After a recent session with his putting instructor, Rory decided that the toe flow of the Newport GSS style was working better with his putting stroke."

Also from the blog: "The Scotty Cameron team built Rory the Newport GSS Prototype last season at the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship. He's put it into play in a few times over the last year and has always kept it in his travel bag."

After his record-setting performance at Congressional, it's hard to imagine McIlroy benching this putter any time soon.
