Rickie Fowler's Customized Titleist Golf Clubs

Posted at 2:03 PM by David Dusek

After competing in his second Walker Cup this summer, Rickie Fowler, an All-American at Oklahoma State, turned pro and started doing what modern pros do. He's signed a clothing and footwear deal with Puma Golf, established himself on Twitter (RickieFowlerPGA) and earned his first top-10 finish by tying for seventh at the Justin Timberlake Shriners Hospitals for Children Open in Las Vegas.

Fowler also signed an equipment deal this summer with Titleist. As you can see from the photos below, he hasn't wasted any time customizing his clubs and showing his Cowboy pride. Fowler said this week that "Steek" is a nickname from his amateur days.

Golf Balls Give Hints to Foursomes Pairings

Posted at 3:02 PM by David Dusek

SAN FRANCISCO — In the foursomes (alternate-shot) matches this week, the players who are paired together will often play different brands of balls. The prevailing wisdom is that the teams should tee off with the ball preferred by the player who will hit the approach shot. Performance of most low-spinning, multilayer balls is fairly similar off the tee, the thinking goes, but the players would notice a different feel when hitting irons and wedges. Since distance control from the fairway is critical to setting up birdies, you want the player who is going to hit the approach shot to use his preferred ball. The rules allow the teams to switch balls after completing a hole.

Anthony Kim Callaway BallOn Wednesday morning, as the American team practiced on the back nine at Harding Park, I snuck a peek at the balls the players used off the tee, and I used that information to make a guess as to Thursday's pairings, which will be announced later this afternoon.

1. Jim Furyk and Justin Leonard: Furyk was teeing off on the even-numbered holes using a Nike ONE Tour ball. He typically plays a Srixon Z-Star X.

2.  Anthony Kim and Phil Mickelson: Kim, who plays a Nike ONE Tour, used a Callaway Tour ix ball off the tee on the even-numbered holes (photo).

3. Zach Johnson and Kenny Perry: They both use a Titleist Pro V1x, but Perry asked Zach if he could use one of his balls on the tee at 13. "His is a little bit different than mine," Perry told a bystander. It's very possible that they use a Pro V1x ball from different model years.

4. Tiger Woods and Steve Stricker: Woods teed off on the odd-numbered holes using a Titleist Pro V1  instead of his Nike One Tour.

5. Hunter Mahan and Sean O'Hair: After hitting O'Hair's TaylorMade Penta TP off the tee on 13, Mahan said, "Wow! It spins a lot." Mahan uses a Titleist Pro V1x.

6. Stewart Cink and Lucas Glover: Both players use a Nike ONE Tour D ball.

Titleist Releasing New Vokey Design Spin Milled C-C Wedges

Posted at 5:49 PM by David Dusek

Titleist-Vokey-Design-Spin-Milled_600 Looking down in the address position, the new Titleist Vokey Design Spin Milled C-C wedges appear virtually identical to the Spin Milled wedges that have been on the market for the past several seasons. The photo on the right shows a 56° Spin Milled C-C wedge on the right, and a 56° Spin Milled wedge on the left.

However, new C-C  models have been created to conform to the USGA's new grooves regulations. Hence the C-C, which stands for "Condition of Competition."

In 2010, Titleist plans to sell both the larger, sharper-grooved Spin Mill wedges that are currently available, as well as the new C-C version. Where the big-groove version features a red saw-blade design on the toe, the new C-C wedges have a gold saw blade and a "C-C" on the hosel.

Spin Milled C-C wedges will come with a sticker on the face that says, "This Vokey Design wedge conforms to the new 2010 USGA/R&A groove rule and can be used in events that adopt the new rule as a Condition of Competition."

The company says that, in general, the new Vokey Design Spin Milled C-C wedges will produce higher launch, less spin and more run-out than previous generations of Spin Milled grooves.

Titleist-Vokey-Spin-Milled-CC_600 The Spin Milled C-C wedges are made from soft 8620 carbon steel. With CNC-machined faces, each wedge has grooves that are precisely cut to the new USGA specifications. Then a series of milled micro edges are cut into the face—just like on the previously-released Spin Milled wedges—to create more friction.

"In reaction to the new groove rules we improved our Spin Milled process," Dan Stone, vice president of research and development for Titleist golf clubs, said in a statement. "We created a new cutting tool that allowed us to tighten our groove manufacturing tolerances by more than 40 percent.  With the new rules calling for a reduced edge radius and effectively less groove volume, we improved our process to get as close to the limits as possible."

The Spin Milled C-C wedges will be available in lofts between 48° and 64°, with several bounce options, for $125.

Camilo Villegas' New Putter Shows Gator Pride

Posted at 2:03 PM by David Dusek

JERSEY CITY, N.J. — Camilo Villegas has covered his driver with a University of Florida gator for years, but Scotty Cameron recently made a special California Series putter for the Colombian star. Villegas had been using a Titleist by Scotty Cameron GSS Circa '62 #6, a model not currently set to be included in the California line, which debuts in late September. However, Cameron created one especially for Villegas and decorated it in Florida colors.

Ryan Moore's Winning Clubs

Posted at 11:55 AM by David Dusek

Ryan-Moore-2009Wyndham_600Endorsement contracts can be very lucrative, and golf fans are used to seeing players, their bags and their apparel covered in logos and insignias. Often these contracts pay professional players a flat rate for using a certain number of clubs, and contain incentive clauses, which can add tens of thousands of dollars to the player's bank account if he wins a PGA Tour event. Win a major and those numbers go up a lot more.

But Ryan Moore, in an attempt to get back to his pure love of the game, walked away from several endorsement deals before winning the Wyndham Championship at Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, N.C.,Sunday.

Forsaking the dollars, Moore plays the clubs he prefers, including his S59 irons, which are the same clubs he used to dominate fields in college and amateur events about five years ago.

Here is a complete list of the clubs Ryan Moore used to win the 2009 Wyndham Championship:

Acushnet wins new trial in Titleist ProV1 patent case

Posted at 4:40 PM by Charlie Hanger

In a new development in the long-running patent dispute between Acushnet, the parent company of Titleist, and Callaway over the ProV1 golf ball, a court of appeals today granted Acushnet's request for a new trial. The press release from Acushnet is below:

"Acushnet Company, the golf business of Fortune Brands, Inc. (NYSE: FO), announced that on August 14, 2009, the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit granted the company’s request for a new trial and issued other favorable decisions in its patent dispute with Callaway Golf.

In its opinion, the Court of Appeals’ three-judge panel found that the inconsistent jury verdict holding one patent claim invalid and others not invalid was irreconcilable and could not stand. As a result, the Court of Appeals overturned the judgment and injunction entered by the District Court in November 2008 and sent the case back to that court for a new trial. The court also found that the trial court erred in rejecting an important Acushnet defense before the trial and in not allowing certain evidence supporting that defense. Acushnet now will be able to assert that defense and the supporting evidence, in addition to its other significant defenses, in a new trial before the District Court. The ruling also confirms that all Titleist Pro V1 products can be sold, bought and played with confidence and without any threat of disruption in service."
