Fantasy Golf Picks for the John Deere Classic

Posted at 2:24 PM by Ryan Reiterman | Categories: Charles Howell III , David Toms , Kenny Perry , Lucas Glover , Scott Verplank , Steve Stricker , Zach Johnson

Each week, we'll identify eight players we like -- two A-players, four B-players and two C-players. (Note: This follows the format of many other popular fantasy games.) If you haven't already, sign up for fantasy golf to compete for great prizes.

The pool of "A" players is pretty sparse this week, with Kenny Perry being the obvious choice. The tough decisions lie in the pool of "B" players, especially if you're like me and have maybe used one player too many times. Despite his good play recently, I'm benching David Toms this week, because I can only use him four more times.

Fortunately, there are still plenty of good choices.

A-Players
Kenny Perry: The defending champion has never finished out of the top 25 in eight appearances.

Ryan Moore: After missing three of four cuts, Moore has finished no worse than T11 in his last three starts.

B-Players
Bryce Molder: After a horrible start to the season, Molder has found his game, finishing in the top 25 in his last four events, including fourth at the AT&T National and a T2 at the St. Jude Classic.

Lucas Glover: The U.S. Open champion is not slowing down, and it appears to be working for him. Since his win at Bethpage Black, Glover has finished T11 at the Travelers and T5 at the AT&T National.

Steve Stricker: While he may be out of chances to win the Comeback Player of the Year for a third time, Stricker is continuing his great play this season. He's notched 11 top-25 finishes in 14 starts, including a win and five other top 10s.

Zach Johnson: With two wins and nine top-25 finishes this season, Johnson is becoming a favorite each time he tees it up.

C-Players
Scott Verplank: He's coming off a T9 at the Travelers, and Verplank has six top-25 finishes in 15 events.

Charles Howell III: It's been a rough few months for Howell, missing five of his last six cuts, but he's finished in the top 25 in three starts at the John Deere.

Fantasy Golf Picks for the AT&T National

Posted at 4:40 PM by Ryan Reiterman | Categories: AT&T National , Boo Weekley , Davis Love III , Jim Furyk , Nick O'Hern , Rocco Mediate , Sean O'Hair , Tiger Woods

Tiger Woods is hosting this week's event at Congressional Country Club, but he'll certainly have something else on his mind: winning the tournament. In the two years since its inception, Woods has yet to win his own event. He tied for sixth in 2007 and missed the event last year while recovering from knee surgery.

A-Players
Tiger Woods: He has seven top 10s in eight starts, including two wins. Plus, it will be easier on Sunday if he just presents himself with the trophy.

Jim Furyk: Tiger's buddy has finished in the top 11 in four of his last five events. Furyk also has come close to winning the AT&T National twice, finishing T3 the past two seasons.

B-Players

Davis Love III: Coming off a T5 at Memorial, Love finished T27 last year at Congressional.

Hunter Mahan: He nearly won another Travelers Championship last week, plus Mahan has finished T8 and T12 at the AT&T National.

Sean O'Hair: In his first event since the birth of his third child, O'Hair has been playing great this year, with six top 10s in 14 events.

Boo Weekley: Boooooooooooo! has been struggling with injuries, but he seems to be back on track, coming off a T14 at the Travelers.

C-Players
Rocco Mediate: Tiger's nemesis at the 2008 U.S. Open has only one top-25 finish this season, but he has yet to miss a cut, and he has a solid record at the AT&T National.

Nick O'Hern: He finished T3 last year at Congressional, and after a string of missed cuts this season, O'Hern has made four straight.

Fantasy Golf Picks for the Travelers Championship

Posted at 2:59 PM by Ryan Reiterman | Categories: Charlie Wi , David Toms , Hunter Mahan , Nick O'Hern , Sergio Garcia , Stewart Cink , Travelers Championship

Normally after a major championship the field for the next tournament is lacking star power. Not the case this week as many big names made the short trip from Long Island to Hartford for the Travelers Championship.

A-Players
Sergio Garcia: So much was made of Garcia's return to Bethpage after he was heckled by rowdy fans in 2002. But what slipped under the radar after the Open was Garcia finished T10 despite not having much confidence in his game coming into last week. He's only making his second career start at the Travelers, but Garcia's game seems to be coming back.

Stewart Cink: A two-time champion at Hartford, Cink has finished in the top 30 in his last three starts, including a T8 at the Memorial.

B-Players
Hunter Mahan: This has to be the easiest pick of the year outside of taking Tiger Woods or Phil Mickelson in any tournament. In his last three starts at the Travelers, Mahan has finished T2, Win, T2. Oh, and he almost won the U.S. Open.

Dustin Johnson: The young bomber has seven top-25 finishes, including a win at Pebble Beach.

David Toms: Toms is due for a win any week now. Well, technically he did win, but it was at the CVS Charity Classic. Regardless, Toms has six top 10s this season and a solid record at the Travelers.

Bubba Watson: Bubba's been playing well since a T2 at Quail Hollow. He finished T6 last year at Hartford, and he is coming off a T20 at the U.S. Open.

C-Players
Nick O'Hern: He only has three top-25 finishes this season, but O'Hern has played solid at the Travelers, with two top 20s in his last two starts.

Charlie Wi: Wi's having a really good season so far, with six top-25 finishes, including three top 10s.

Fantasy Golf Picks for the St. Jude Classic

Posted at 5:48 PM by Ryan Reiterman | Categories: Camilo Villegas , David Toms , Justin Leonard , Retief Goosen , Scott Verplank , St. Jude Classic , Woody Austin

Like a lot of fantasy players, I'm a sucker for the big names (Thanks for the win last week, Tiger!) But this week at the St. Jude Classic, the sexy names might not be the best picks for your fantasy roster.

Phil Mickelson and John Daly headline the field, but they both come in with several question marks. Padraig Harrington has missed two of his last three cuts and has zero top 10s this season. Sergio Garcia has also yet to finish in the top 10. And since winning the Players Championship, Henrik Stenson has missed two cuts on the European Tour.

Fortunately there are still plenty of guys with a good shot to win this week, starting with the defending champion.

A-Players
Justin Leonard: He has two wins in the last four years at the St. Jude, and Leonard is coming off a great Texas Swing where he finished T5, T16 and T13 in three events in his home state.

Camilo Villegas: Spiderman has a new sidekick on the bag this week: Joe LaCava, one of the best caddies on tour. Plus, Villegas has a solid record at Southwind, with two top-20 finishes in three years.

B-Players
David Toms: Since 2002, Toms has finished in the top 5 four times, including back-to-back wins in 2003 and 2004.

Jason Day: It's his first time in this event, but Day has played well the past two events, finishing fourth at Colonial and T27 at the Memorial.

Tim Clark: It will be interesting to see how Clark fares in his first event since his tough loss at Colonial. But Clark has been playing solid golf since the Masters, so I expect him to bounce back with a strong finish this week.

Woody Austin: I know, I know. I advise picking against players like Mickelson and Garcia, but I recommend picking Aquaman?! It's a stretch, but Austin won the St. Jude in 2007, and he has finished in the top 30 in his last three events.

C-Players

Scott Verplank: He has consecutive top 10s at Southwind, plus Verplank has five top-25 finishes this season.

Retief Goosen: The Goose might be ready for another run at the U.S. Open. He won earlier this year at the Transitions, and he is coming off consecutive top-25 finishes.

Fantasy Golf Picks for the Memorial Tournament

Posted at 4:10 PM by Ryan Reiterman | Categories: Bo Van Pelt , Ian Poulter , Luke Donald , Memorial Tournament , Nick Watney , Paul Casey , Sean O'Hair , Tiger Woods

Good news for the pros this week: Jack Nicklaus is taking it easy on them. Gone are the controversial furrowed bunkers, and the rough is shorter than previous years. The fast greens remain, however, so it's no surprise major champions have done well at the Memorial: Tiger Woods, Ernie Els, Jim Furyk, Vijay Singh and Fred Couples have all won at Muirfield Village.

A-Players
Tiger Woods: The three-time Memorial champion is still struggling with his driver, but it's not stopping him from finishing in the top 10 in five of his six starts this season.

Paul Casey: He moved up to No. 3 in the world after winning the European Open. Then Casey flew across the Atlantic and finished fifth last week at Colonial.

B-Players
Sean O'Hair: O'Hair is coming off a good week at Colonial, plus he has finished in the top 12 twice in the past three years at the Memorial.

Nick Watney: He's missed two of his last three cuts, but Watney has also never missed the cut in two starts at Muirfield Village.

Dustin Johnson: He's coming off a solid Texas Swing with a T24 at the Nelson and a T4 at Colonial.

Bo Van Pelt: Van Pelt has four top-25 finishes this season, and he's finished in the top 30 at Memorial three of last four years.

C-Players
Ian Poulter: I'm jumping back on the Poulter bandwagon after another top-10 finish last week at Colonial, his fourth in nine events.

Luke Donald: Poulter's fellow countryman has eight top-25 finishes in 11 starts this season.

Fantasy Golf Picks for the Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial

The final leg of the Texas Swing rolls in Fort Worth this week for the Colonial. Phil Mickelson will not be around to defend his title, but there are plenty of top players on their games as they try to conquer the Texas version of Hogan's Alley.

A-Players
Stewart Cink: He hasn't been on his game since a T3 at the Match Play, but Cink has four top-20 finishes at Colonial since 2003. Plus he tweeted about the course changes, and Cink said he is a fan.

Justin Leonard: The Dallas native is having a solid Texas Swing with a T5 at the Texas Open and a T16 at the Nelson. Leonard has also never missed the cut at Colonial in 15 starts.

B-Players
Rod Pampling: In his last four trips to Colonial, Pampling finished T2, T12, 3, T6.

Charley Hoffman: Another player having a solid Texas Swing is Hoffman. He's finished in the top 25 in both events, plus he hasn't missed a cut this season.

Steve Stricker: The two-time Comeback Player of the Year is having another great season. He's finished in the top 25 in nine of his 11 starts, including five top 10s.

Rory Sabbatini: I'm probably a week too late on this pick, but Sabbatini is a former champion at Colonial, and he has five top 10s this season in addition to his win at the Nelson.

C-Players
Matt Kuchar: After solid finishes at the Players and the Nelson, Kuchar was the medalist on Monday for British Open qualifying.

James Nitties: The rookie has missed eight cuts this season, but Nitties has also finished in the top 25 six times, including two top 10s.

Fantasy Golf Picks for the HP Byron Nelson Championship

The Texas Swing rolls into Irving this week for the Byron Nelson Championship, where the marquee players should be left off of your fantasy roster. Phil Mickelson was the headliner until the sad news came out about his wife being diagnosed with breast cancer.

Defending champion Adam Scott will get his game turned around eventually, but he has missed five straight cuts. Anthony Kim is another player who is struggling with his game. Kim has yet to factor in a tournament since the Mercedes in January.

A-Players
Justin Leonard: The native Texan got the Texas Swing off to a great start with a T5 last week, Leonard's fourth top 10 of the season.

Mike Weir: Weir has only missed two cuts all season, and he is coming off a T14 at the Players.

B-Players
Hunter Mahan: Mahan has rarely had an off-week this season, with seven top-25 finishes in 11 starts.

Charley Hoffman: Not only does Hoffman have two top 10s in three starts at the Nelson, but he is also coming off a T9 last week at the Texas Open.

Bo Van Pelt: Van Pelt has yet to miss the cut at the Nelson, and he's had a solid season with six top-30 finishes in 12 events.

Briny Baird: Baird gets an extra boost this week after winning everyone free lettuce wraps at P.F. Chang's.

C-Players
Ian Poulter: The flashy Englishman is getting closer and closer to his first win in the U.S. after a T5 in Charlotte and a solo second at the Players.

Scott Verplank: The 2007 winner and Dallas native has five top-25 finishes in 11 events this season.

Fantasy Golf Picks for the Players Championship

When Tiger Woods hasn't finished in the top 10 since 2001, you know this is going to be a different week for fantasy golf. Yup, it's time for the Players Championship, the tournament where nobody has ever defend their title. (As if you needed a reason not to pick Sergio right now.)

A-Players
Geoff Ogilvy: Like many players, Ogilvy's track record at Sawgrass isn't pretty. But he's already won twice this season, and he's been pretty consistent each time he tees it up: no missed cuts, plus five top-25 finishes in nine events.

Jim Furyk: The Jacksonville resident always seems like a good pick for the Players, probably because he's only missed the cut twice, and he has come close to winning this event several times.

B-Players
Boo Weekley: After missing his only cut of the year at the Masters, Boo has chalked up three consecutive top-13 finishes. I'm just hoping he has the lead on Sunday, hits the 17th green, then gallops around the pond like he did at the Ryder Cup.

Hunter Mahan: Another guy quietly having a good, consistent season is Mahan. In 10 events he's finished in the top 25 seven times.

Nick Watney: I've been on the Watney bandwagon for a few weeks now, and it's hard to get off with nine top-25 finishes in 11 events.

Charley Hoffman: In his last three events, Hoffman has been in the hunt with the exception of one bad round. Look for him to put together four solid rounds this week.

C-Players
Ian Poulter: Coming off a T5 at Quail Hollow, Poulter has finished out of the top 20 only once in six events.

Henrik Stenson: One of the few players with a solid record at Sawgrass, Stenson has finished T10, T23 and T3 in his three starts at the Players.

Fantasy Golf Picks for the Quail Hollow Championship

With the Tour in Charlotte this week for the Quail Hollow Championship and then the Players Championship next week, the A-list players are out of their post-Masters hibernation. With an abundance of big names, it's time to start making some tough decisions about which players to start this week.

A-Players
Phil Mickelson: One could argue Phil is playing better than Tiger right now, plus Phil also has an excellent track record in this event: three top 10s in five starts.

Tiger Woods: I almost sat the World No. 1 this week, but it's hard to pick against Tiger. Even though he didn't play well at the Masters, he still finished T6.

B-Players
Nick Watney: After a great start to the season, Watney missed his first cut of the year last week in New Orleans. I'm not ready to give up on him yet. He's never missed the cut at Quail Hollow, and I think with some extra time off last week he'll be ready to contend.

Rory Sabbatini: Some poor putting on the back nine cost Sabbatini a win last week. However it was his second straight top 10 and third consecutive top-20 finish.

Adam Scott: Not a sexy pick, since Scott has missed three straight cuts, but he's too good of a player to stay down for long. In four trips to Charlotte, Scott hasn't finished out of the top 25.

Sean O'Hair: Quail Hollow hasn't been kind to O'Hair, but he's been very consistent this year. In nine events he has finished out of the top 25 only once -- a missed cut at the Transitions.

C-Players
Robert Karlsson: The big-hitting Swede isn't a household name, but he's 11th in the World Golf Rankings and one of the best choices from the C-players.

Retief Goosen: Charles Howell III is a better choice this week, but I've used him a lot this season, so the Goose gets the second spot this week. Besides, Howell is coming off another tough loss, while Goosen is playing for the first time since the Masters.

Fantasy Golf Picks for the Zurich Classic of New Orleans

Posted at 1:48 PM by Charlie Hanger | Categories: Charles Howell III , David Toms , John Merrick , Justin Rose , Nick Watney , Woody Austin , Zurich Classic

For a tournament without many "big names" this week, there are plenty of good storylines at the Zurich Classic. Kenny Perry returns for the first time since losing in a playoff at the Masters, U.S. Amateur champion Danny Lee makes his pro debut, and if history holds true there could be a first time winner on Sunday.

A-Players

John Merrick: With the last four Zurich Classic champions winning their first title in New Orleans, Merrick is a good choice to continue the trend. He earned another trip to Augusta after finishing T6 at the Masters. Merrick also has two other top 10s this season, and he tied for seventh last year at the Zurich Classic.

Justin Rose: He's won all over the world, but Rose is still looking for his first PGA Tour title. He's finished second three times, but has yet to close the deal. Rose has never missed the cut in three trips to New Orleans.

B-Players

Nick Watney: The 2007 champion has been one of the best players on Tour this season. Watney won at Torrey Pines, and he has finished out of the top 25 only once in nine events.

Woody Austin: Aquaman had his best finish of the year last week, tying for 11th at Harbour Town. He hasn't missed a cut this year, and he hasn't placed out of the top 25 in New Orleans since 2004.

Stephen Ames: Ames has four top 25 finishes this year, and while he has played in New Orleans only once since 2004, he has three career top 10s.

David Toms: The Louisiana native, and 2001 champion, has three top 10s this season, plus he'll have the home crowd on his side.

C-Players

Charles Howell III: Making his first start at the Zurich Classic since a T2 in 2006, Howell hasn't been great this season, but he has been a more consistent player. He has two top-five finishes and only one missed cut.

Scott Verplank: After missing two straight cuts to open the season, Verplank has finished in the top 25 four times.
