David Feherty on Twittering, first-tee nerves, and ... Internet dating?
Sorry, ladies—he's taken. But you wouldn't know it to click on Match.com, where some lonely heart has posted a photo of David Feherty in the hopes of landing a date. The happily married CBS commentator recently learned that "goodguy_in_Texas" (Feherty lives in Dallas) is using the Irishman's image to attract Lone Star state women. Which begs the question: Huh? I asked Feherty about his dating doppelganger.
Connell Barrett: Does your lovely wife Anita know that you're dating? Or that a photo of you is dating?
David Feherty: It's funny, my ex-wife found the ad, and she sent it to Anita. What I don't understand is why anyone would use a photo of me in a dating ad. How sad, smelly, lonely and ugly do you have to be to use my photo? I hope that I'm helping someone named Feherty have sex.
CB: The ad is clearly a fake. It begins, "I'm a normal, happy, good guy."
DF: Yeah, and [Anita] knew it wasn't me because it says "slender." Actually, I sound like a pretty good catch. I think I'll answer the ad, show up, and date myself. I wonder what it will be like to be with me. What if it really is me? What a Freudian nightmare. But it would never work out. This guy's looking for a woman into barbecues and boating, two things I hate.
CB: Speaking of social networking, you're now Twittering (Follow Feherty). Why?
DF: With me, it's anti-social networking. It's a way to publicize a series of behind-the-scenes videos we shot this year on Tour that, I hope, will be available soon. It's a much-vaunted, but still unseen, webisode series for CBSsports.com called "The David Feherty Hour—the Best 3 Minutes of TV on the Internet."
CB: Catchy title. Last question. Any tips on how to find the fairway when the pressure's on? I make my PGA Tour pro-am debut on Wednesday, and I need swing advice.
DF: Yes. Take your practice swing first, but let the ball get in the way. Then make your real swing afterward, when the ball is gone. Think about it. No one ever f---s up a practice swing.
