How to hit golf's coolest shot

Posted at 10:27 AM by Connell Barrett | Categories: Henrik Stenson, Operation: Breakthrough

Tough room, the blogosphere. When I peruse the fire-breathing reader feedback, it's as if the Web has been completely overtaken by Statler and Waldorf from the Muppet Show. This medium was made for these coots.

But there are some positive vibes out there. Riley Sager, 15, from Swanton, Ohio writes: Connell, I like your blog! It's funny. I really want to get better this year. How do I hit Tiger's stinger? It's the coolest shot.

Thanks for the kind words, Riley. But... Tiger's stinger? That's so 2000. (You were 5!) Since you asked, here's a piece from the Golf.com vault to answer your question.

Henrik-stenson_flyers But since Tiger's not playing again until who-knows-when, if you want a cool shot in your arsenal, let's look at an active Tour player. Golf Magazine Senior Writer Cameron Morfit said the sweetest swing he saw all last year wasn't made by Woods. "It was Henrik Stenson on no. 10 at the Masters," says Morfit, who's on Tour most weeks. "He hit driver off the deck on the tee — this cool, low, knuckling draw that caught the slope of the fairway and ran for an eternity, maybe 330 yards."

How's it done? Here's Golf Magazine Top 100 Teacher Rick Grayson: "FIRST, make a grass-tee with your driver," Grayson says. "A few sideways swats on the tee box will dislodge some turf. Simply roll your ball on top of the launch pad. Your friends will think, 'Woah, he looks like a pro.' NEXT, choke down an inch or two on your driver shaft, which shortens the club and gives you more control. FINALLY, don't try to help the ball in the air. If anything, your clubhead moves on a level-to-downward path — not a scooping motion — to get the ball airborne. Let the loft do the work. Without a tee, there's less spin on your ball, so you get a knuckling action. The ball releases and just runs and runs."

Very cool!
