Norman needs a retirement from retirement

For a guy who has repeatedly said he’s done with competitive golf, Greg Norman’s starting to look a lot like that pot-bellied 60-year-old who appears at pickup basketball games to run with guys half his age. (Only difference being Norman’s still got skills and he’s built like a Marine.)

Let’s recap: This week Norman’s playing in the European Tour’s Asian Open in Shanghai, an appearance that comes in the wake of two starts already this year on the PGA Tour (Pebble Beach and Mayakoba). Next month he’s scheduled to play the AT&T Classic (another PGA Tour event, at the -- ahem -- Norman-designed TPC Sugarloaf in Georgia) as well as the Senior PGA Championship at Oak Hill. That’s a fuller slate than Tiger’s.

I don’t get it. A few months ago he told Golf Magazine: “I have no interest in going out there and practicing...I love being home on the weekends. I traveled for 27, 28 years of my life every weekend for 40 weekends a year, and now I don’t have to.” Pebble Beach, Mexico, China, upstate New York? Even with a private jet, that's a grind. Not that the Shark's resurgence is a bad thing. The guy’s still got more star power than nine of the top 10 players in the world, so as long as he’s game for a game, we'll keep watching.
