Garcia and Europe are favorites with online bookmakers

Posted at 3:27 PM by Cameron Morfit | Categories: Ryder Cup

British bookmaker Ladbrokes has Europe as the 4/7 favorite to either win this week's Ryder Cup outright or retain the trophy by virtue of a tie. (Bet $7, and if Europe hoists the trophy you win $4.)

Paddy Power, a bookmaker out of Ireland, also has Europe as the favorite at 8/11. Both Ladbrokes and Paddy Power have Sergio Garcia at 4/1 to be Europe's highest point-scorer. Padraig Harrington is also listed at 4/1 by Ladbrokes, but ironically the Paddy Power betting house believes "Paddy" Harrington is less likely to lead the Euros in points, at 5/1.

According to Paddy Power, Phil Mickelson is expected to lead the U.S. team in points at 5/1, followed by Jim Furyk (11/2) and Anthony Kim (6/1). Ladbrokes has both Mickelson and Furyk at 4/1, while Kim is 7/1 to lead the Yanks. Paddy Power says Ryder Cup rookie Kim is also the clear favorite to be the top "debutant" point-scorer in the competition, at 4/1, followed by Justin Rose (11/2) and Steve Stricker (6/1).

The most questionable line on Paddy Power's site has Garcia's odds of winning the maximum 5 points at 12/1, the same as Mickelson's odds of winning 5 points. Given the Spaniard's outrageous success in past Ryder Cups, the likelihood of him going 5 for 5 would seem far greater than the likelihood of Lefty running the table. The least likely player to win all of his matches, according to Paddy Power? Oliver Wilson at 125/1. It says here he's also the most likely player to be asked to show his player ID badge.
