Gekko (Michael Douglas) gets off easy at PGA press conference

Posted at 11:18 AM by Alan Bastable |

I wonder what Gordon Gekko thinks about the state of the economy. Is greed, for lack of a better word, still good? We'll have to wait for that answer.

Michael Douglas, who played Gekko, an infamous corporate raider in the 1987 hit Wall Street, dropped by the press tent at the PGA Grand Slam of Golf in Bermuda yesterday. Regrettably, the banter revolved mostly around golf.

Douglas, a Bermuda resident, was playing in the event’s pro-am and said he’s about a 16 handicap. He was paired with Padraig Harrington, who he described as a “real gentleman.”

“His patience was inspirational,” Douglas said.

So, too, was Harrington’s hearing. After Douglas missed a putt, Paddy immediately suspected faulty equipment. Douglas explained: “He heard my putt and said, ‘Let me see your putter. The face is loose on it; not that it makes any difference, but the face is loose.’ ”

Fear not, Gekko/Douglas fans—Douglas’s day off was just a respite from a busy schedule. He says he has two films coming out in early ’09: The Ghost of Girlfriends Past (with Matthew McConaghey) and a thriller called Beyond a Reasonable Doubt.
