Woods to play in quirky Tavistock Cup

Posted at 12:42 PM by Mike Walker | Categories: Tiger Woods

It's official: Tiger Woods must really be feeling better.

Woods announced he'll play in the Tavistock Cup next Monday and Tuesday, according to The Orlando Sentinel. The quirky event is a closed-to-the-public, two-day tournament pitting PGA Tour pro members of the Isleworth Golf & Country Club and Lake Nona Golf & Country Club against each other. It's kind of like your neighborhood softball game, if your neighbors were Derek Jeter, Manny Ramirez and Albert Pujols. Isleworth's heavy-hitting lineup has Woods, J.B Holmes and Darren Clarke while Ernie Els, Trevor Immelman and Ian Poulter play for Lake Nona. The Tavistock Cup started as a lark in 2004, a rivalry between nearby clubs, but it has become kind of a big deal. The Golf Channel will broadcast this year's tournament, so you can watch even if you're not one of the lucky club members or guests of the Tavistock Group, the investment company which owns both clubs.

Last year, Isleworth won the tournament 19½ - 11½. The format of the tournament is as wacky as its spectators-in-the fairway galleries and Isleworth-red-or-Lake-Nona-blue dress code. Round 1 is Fourball Medal Match Play. Within the fourball, the two-person team with the lowest 18-hole better-ball total will win the match. Round 2 is a Fourball Singles Medal Match Play format. Each player in the group plays an 18-hole stroke play singles match against each of the opposing two players; therefore, each player plays two singles matches. If there is a two-ball match, each player will play a singles match against their opponent.

Maybe they ought to move it to the weekend. Sounds like more fun than the Transitions Championship without Woods.
