Chad Campbell injures leg, withdraws from Colonial

Posted at 6:24 PM by Damon Hack | Categories: Chad Campbell, Colonial

FORT WORTH, Texas -- Chad Campbell, a runner up in last month's Masters, injured his lower leg Friday at the Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial while hitting a bunker shot on the 17th hole and withdrew from the tournament. He was taken to a nearby hospital for x-rays.

Campbell, who is from Andrews, Texas, and lives near Fort Worth, told a marshall at the hole that he heard "a pop" in his calf after hitting his ball. Campbell then tried to get up and walk, only to fall down. Medics then carted him to the clubhouse, from where he was driven to the hospital.

"We're still waiting on the doctor and the x-rays to come back," said Campbell's mother, Patsy, who accompanied him to the hospital. "We wanted to be cautious."

Campbell's injury comes more than a month after he lost the Masters in a playoff, along with Kenny Perry, to Angel Cabrera. Since then, Campbell has missed two cuts and finished no better than tied for 60th. The injury could jeopardize his appearance at next month's United States Open at Bethpage Black in Farmingdale, N.Y.

Campbell was not exempt for the championship in 2002, when Bethpage last hosted the Open.
