Phil Mickelson drops in on Bethpage for U.S. Open practice

Posted at 4:50 PM by Cameron Morfit | Categories: Phil Mickelson , U.S. Open

One day after Tiger Woods visited Bethpage Black, the site of next week's U.S. Open, Phil Mickelson caused a stir when he also dropped in on the public course Tuesday.

Mickelson, who has taken a leave of absence from the Tour since announcing last month that his wife, Amy, has breast cancer, will return to competition at this week's St. Jude Championship in Memphis. He is scheduled to give a press conference there around noon Wednesday, leaving little time to tour New York's famous Black course, which was last in the spotlight as host of the 2002 U.S. Open, won by Woods. (Mickelson finished second.)

Despite around two hours of rain Tuesday morning, and a throng of fans who caught wind of the visit and began to follow Mickelson en masse, the popular left-hander looked like he was going to get in 18, according to T.R. Reinman, Mickelson's spokesman.

Mickelson was joined by his caddie, Jim (Bones) MacKay, and short-game coach Dave Pelz.

Big Tom Your an a**. I guess it would be okay if it was Tiger going thru the same thing with his wife.

If you can't find a TV, track Phil's progress, hole-by-hole, through SMS alerts on www.trackle.com. Very impressive!

I hope Phil wins the US Open in order to make
Tournaments with Tiger less boring

Phil Mickelson only good on a easy course. He will not win another major with Tigers in the field. His B game has no room on Tigers game.

Phil Mickelson will not win another tournament as long as Tiger Woods in the field always has been.

he doesnt need to spend every second of the day with his wife, u dont just die from cancer that day

Why isn't he with his wife? I see the majors are more important to him.

Hope all is well with his wife. Guarantee his wife pushed him out the door. It will be good to see him at the US Open even though Im not a big fan of his.
