Tiger Woods to skip Chevron World Challenge tournament

Posted at 2:52 PM by Mike Walker

Tiger Woods will not attend the Chevron World Challenge, the tournament he hosts in Thousand Oaks, Calif., due to injuries he sustained in a one-car collision early Friday morning. Woods, who has yet to speak publicly since the accident, was scheduled to speak with reporters at the event Tuesday.

"I am extremely disappointed that I will not be at my tournament this week," Woods said in a written statement on TigerWoods.com. "I am certain it will be an outstanding event and I'm very sorry that I can't be there."

Woods hosts the Chevron World Challenge and the proceeds from the event benefit his foundation. Woods's scheduled appearance was used heavily to sell tickets. Last year, Woods attended the tournament despite being unable to play following knee surgery. The pre-Christmas tournament attracts a small field of elite golfers, which includes some of Woods's closest friends on Tour.

According to the Chevron World Challenge web site, the tournament will begin offering ticket refunds on Dec. 7, and all 2009 ticket holders will receive a 20 percent discount off tickets to next year's event. The refund policy was announced after Woods said he wasn't going to play this year.

On his Web site, Woods said he will not compete again until next year. If his 2010 playing schedule is the same as this year, Woods won't play in a U.S. tournament until the PGA Tour's Torrey Pines event in San Diego on Jan. 28.

Police deny media reports on Woods investigation

Posted at 1:47 PM by Mike Walker

The Florida Highway Patrol said Monday it is still investigating Tiger Woods' one-car accident, but that some media reports on the details of that investigation are incorrect.

"Contrary to various media reports, the Florida Highway Patrol has not made any comments regarding the details of the ongoing crash investigation involving Tiger Woods as it relates to medical information, or any other aspect of this investigation," Florida Highway Patrol Sgt. Kim Montes said.

So far, Woods has declined three times to speak to police about the accident near his home early Friday evening, and speculation on the circumstances of the crash is rampant in the traditional media and on the Internet. While the Florida Highway Patrol does not indicate any particular report or media outlet as incorrect, the statement appears directed at TMZ.com's report earlier Monday that investigators are pursuing a search warrant to review Woods' medical records from Health Center Hospital in Ocoee, Fla., where Woods was treated after the accident. TMZ now says that police have not formally sought a warrant, but that investigators are still pursuing one. TMZ also reported that two Florida Highway Patrol troopers visited Health Center Hospital on Monday.

The Florida Highway Patrol said that charges in the accident are "pending" and that the police will not be available for in-person interviews with media outlets.

"At this time, the agency has not scheduled a press conference, and the FHP is not conducting any on-camera, recorded or telephone interviews," Montes said. "All updates will be sent via email."

Woods' silence means more questions for his fellow players

Posted at 8:24 PM by Mike Walker

Tiger Woods isn't the only one who doesn't want to talk about his car accident; his fellow Tour players surely are dreading the questions that will come their way during this week's Chevron World Classic, the Woods-hosted tournament at the Sherwood Country Club in Thousand Oaks, Calif.

Even at the Mission Hills resort in Shenzhen, China, professional golfers couldn't escape media queries about Woods's fender-bender heard round the world. Playing for Korea in the World Cup of Golf, Y.E. Yang finished his round on Saturday and was immediately asked about Woods' accident.

"Tiger has not called me personally, so I don't know," Yang said. "Hopefully it's not a big injury. Hopefully it's not a big injury for the sake of the PGA Tour, because it will be a big hit for the PGA Tour if he's injured. So hopefully he will be in good condition for next season and I'll see him in Hawaii."

A reporter asked Ireland's Graeme McDowell and Rory McIlroy if they go out at 2:30 a.m., and McDowell gave a light-hearted response: "If you run out of milk, I suppose you've got to go get some."

McDowell added that he didn't know anything about the accident beyond what he read online.

"We woke up and we saw it on the news this morning when we woke up," McDowell said. "We both logged on to the Net in the morning to see what's happening in the world and we woke up to that one in the morning. So, who knows? Don't know. We don't know any more than you do."

McIlroy's response was the one you'll likely see Tour pros repeat at Sherwood this week. He shrugged his shoulders.

Report: Woods not tested for alcohol after crash

Posted at 5:43 PM by Mike Walker

Police did not give Tiger Woods a breath test to determine if alcohol was a factor in his single-car accident early Friday morning, according to The Orlando Sentinel. Officers responding to the scene had no reason to suspect Woods was under the influence of alcohol, Florida Highway Patrol Sgt. Kim Montes told the Sentinel.

Woods was not given a breath test, nor was his blood or urine tested. Troopers need probable cause that someone is under the influence of alcohol or drugs to demand such tests, and they had none, Montes said. Such probable cause could include finding liquor bottles in a car or smelling alcohol on someone's breath.

Kissimmee (Fla.) defense lawyer Don Waggoner said Saturday that troopers must arrest someone before they test for alcohol or drug intoxication. They cannot draw blood unless they can't get a breath or urine sample, and they can't take those unless they suspect intoxication, he said.

"If there's no reason for them to believe he's under the influence of alcohol, then they have no probable cause," Waggoner said. "People have accidents all the time, and they aren't under the influence of alcohol."

In a written statement, Montes described how state troopers were turned away for the third straight day when attempting to interview Woods about the accident Sunday afternoon.

"The troopers went to the house to see if they could speak with Mr. Woods," Montes said. "Mr. Woods' attorney was present and told investigators that Mr. Woods was unavailable for an interview. Mr. Woods' attorney provided the troopers with Mr. Woods' driver’s license information, registration and current proof of insurance as required by Florida Law. The crash investigation is ongoing and charges are pending."

Audio and transcript: Tiger Woods's neighbor calls 911 after accident

Posted at 4:44 PM by Anne Szeker

The Florida Highway Patrol has released the 911 call made by a neighbor after Tiger Woods's single-car crash early Friday morning near his home in Windermere, Fla. According to the accident report, Woods ran over a fire hydrant at 2:25 a.m. and then smashed into a tree. (Read more about the accident.)

The call doesn't reveal much new information, but it's interesting that the caller never says that the injured neighbor is Tiger Woods, and he also makes no mention of Woods's wife, Elin, being on the scene of the accident. Click on the bar below to hear a recording of the call; a transcript is also below.

Tiger Woods issues statement about car accident

Posted at 2:30 PM by Anne Szeker

Tiger Woods released the following statement on his Web site Sunday regarding his car crash early Friday morning.

As you all know, I had a single-car accident earlier this week, and sustained some injuries. I have some cuts, bruising and right now I'm pretty sore.

This situation is my fault, and it's obviously embarrassing to my family and me. I'm human and I'm not perfect. I will certainly make sure this doesn't happen again.

This is a private matter and I want to keep it that way. Although I understand there is curiosity, the many false, unfounded and malicious rumors that are currently circulating about my family and me are irresponsible.

The only person responsible for the accident is me. My wife, Elin, acted courageously when she saw I was hurt and in trouble. She was the first person to help me. Any other assertion is absolutely false.

This incident has been stressful and very difficult for Elin, our family and me. I appreciate all the concern and well wishes that we have received. But, I would also ask for some understanding that my family and I deserve some privacy no matter how intrusive some people can be.

Report: Woods was unconscious for six minutes

Posted at 10:24 AM by Mike Walker

Tiger Woods was unconscious for six minutes after he crashed his car into a fire hydrant and a tree Friday night according to The Orlando Sentinel.

By the time a Windermere police officer arrived about 2:25 a.m., Elin Nordegren Woods had dragged her husband out of his 2009 Cadillac Escalade. He was lying on the ground, dazed and bleeding from his lips and with blood in his mouth, Windermere Mayor Gary Bruhn said.

The crash knocked Tiger Woods, 33, unconscious for about six minutes, according to a call report compiled by the Orange County Sheriff's Office and obtained by the Orlando Sentinel. Bruhn said the golfer faded in and out of consciousness.

Woods was later released from Health Central Hospital in Oconee, Fla., in good condition and is reportedly resting at his Windermere, Fla., home. The extent of Woods' injuries are unclear. A statement released on TigerWoods.com characterized the crash as a "minor car accident." However, Florida Highway Patrol spokesman Sgt. Kim Montes said that Woods "suffered serious injuries," according to the Sentinel. Woods is expected to talk with the Highway Patrol about the accident today.

Troopers from the Florida Highway Patrol visited Woods' home on Friday to talk, but his wife, Elin, said that he was sleeping so the troopers agreed to come back on Saturday, according to several news reports.

Tiger Woods in car accident early Friday morning

Posted at 3:53 PM by Damon Hack

Tiger Woods was injured in a car accident early Friday morning outside his home in Windermere, Fla., and was hospitalized before being released, according to the Florida Highway Patrol and a statement released by Woods's management team.Tiger_600x379

Woods, the No. 1 golfer in the world, suffered facial lacerations when his Cadillac Escalade sports utility vehicle struck a fire hydrant and a tree around 2:25 a.m., according to the Florida Highway Patrol police report. He was treated at Health Central Hopsital in Ocoee, Fla., and was released in good condition, a Woods spokesman told the Associated Press. Woods's agent, Mark Steinberg, said in an email to CNBC that the golfer "is fine."

Alcohol was not involved and Woods was the only person involved in the crash, the police report said.

Windermere Police Chief Daniel Saylor told the Associated Press on Friday that Woods's wife, Elin Nordegren, told officers she used a golf club to break the car's back window to help Woods out of the vehicle after hearing the accident from inside the home. According to the Associated Press, when officers arrived they found Woods lying in the street with his wife hovering over him. Woods had blood in his mouth and cuts on his lips, and he was in and out of consciousness, Saylor told the Associated Press.

Saylor told the Associated Press that his officers gave Woods first aid until fire and rescue arrived about 10 minutes later.

Windermere mayor Gary Bruhn, who was briefed on the accident by Saylor, told Golf.com that the police did not release news of the report until after Woods had been released from the hospital so that the hospital would not become overrun with reporters. He said that when the Windermere police responded to the scene that Woods was on the ground, "dazed," and that he did try to get up on his own. He said he did not know if Woods had received any stitches and he did not know whether the Escalade was in forward or reverse at the time of the accident.

Woods's vehicle was towed by Johnson's Wrecker Service in Orlando, where it is in a garage space that cannot be seen from a public street.

The Isleworth development, in which Arnold Palmer was an early investor, is not part of the incorporated town of Windermere, in Orange County. It is a gated community with its own private security force. Windermere police were the first respondents to a Florida Highway Patrol call for emergency help. Bruhn said his police arrived within minutes of the call, but that he believed Isleworth security officers were already on the accident scene when the Windermere officers arrived.

On Friday afternoon, a statement was posted on tigerwoods.com, Woods's web site, which read:

"Tiger Woods was in a minor car accident outside his home last night. He was admitted, treated and released today in good condition. We appreciate very much everyone's thoughts and well wishes."

The celebrity web site, TMZ.com, citing multiple unnamed law enforcement sources, said Friday that Woods and Nordegren argued before the accident. However Saylor said his officers did not hear anything about an alleged domestic dispute, according to the Associated Press.

It is not clear whether Woods, 33, will be able to compete next week in the Chevron World Challenge in Thousand Oaks, Calif., a tournament that benefits Woods's eponymous foundation and which he annually hosts.

Woods spent the latter half of 2008 rehabilitating his left knee after undergoing reconstructive surgery following his victory in that year's United States Open at Torrey Pines. He returned to the PGA Tour in February of this year and won six times, though he was shut out in the major championships.

Woods, who has won 14 professional major titles, trails Jack Nicklaus's record by four.

Two More Things To Be Thankful For

Posted at 1:42 PM by Dick Friedman

After GOLF.com's main meal, here are a couple of leftovers that I, at least, am no less grateful for.

1.) TV's ON-COURSE FOOTSOLDIERS. Bless you, Roger Maltbie, Dottie Pepper, Judy Rankin, Billy Ray Brown and others who slog sweatily through tournaments while calmly correcting the blowhards up in the air-conditioned booths.

2.) THE AVERAGE GOLFER AND FAN. On Thanksgiving 2008, the sport of golf was under siege, lambasted as a haven for expense-account junketeers and corporate boondogglers. And, of course, the golf industry, like almost every other during the current downturn, is undergoing a wrenching shakeout, one that has put in particular peril many private clubs. But you, Joe and Jane Golfer, kept right on swinging.

According to DataTech, through September rounds were up over '08 (by 0.5%). With undimmed enthusiasm, you turned up in big numbers at tournaments; kept ratings strong for televised events; and made your voices heard on the blogs (including those on our site). In all, you provided the best rebuttal to the attacks of those looking to score political points off the embattled sport, demonstrating with every stroke that golf is vital to our society economically, socially, recreationally and environmentally.
