Garrigus makes first cut at Riviera after health scare

Garrigus PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. -- Robert Garrigus shot a 2-under-par 69 at the Northern Trust Open on Friday, and his two-round total of even par will be more than enough to make the cut.

It will mark his first made cut here in three starts, which isn't bad considering he began this week feeling so bad he withdrew from Sunday's final round of the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am.

"I woke up and felt really dizzy, and my heart was pounding," Garrigus said after signing his card Friday. "I was tied for 11th, so I would have played with a broken leg, but I was just really dehydrated. I sat in the ER [in Monterey] for like two and a half hours. They put two bags of fluid in me."

Garrigus, who has become famous for his booming drives and his tiny putter since he broke through with his first win last season, is one of the hotter players in the game after having lost a playoff (to Jonathan Byrd) in the season-opening Hyundai Tournament of Champions last month.

He started this week's NTO cold after forgoing the practice rounds. He went from Monterey to Cedars-Sinai in Los Angeles to make sure he was okay to play golf, and doctors gave him a heart monitor to wear for 24 hours starting Tuesday afternoon. When his heartbeat checked out fine, he showed up to hit a few balls on the range Thursday morning before teeing off with Lucas Glover and Vaughn Taylor.

"I'm good to go now," said Garrigus, still sporting the ski cap he wore in Friday's cool, breezy weather. "My agent told me the top 10 in FedEx points after the West Coast get into Doral [for the WGC-Cadillac Championship]. I probably need a pair of 67s or so on the weekend."

Currently 12th in the FedEx Cup standings, Garrigus said his initial plans are to play only Tampa and Bay Hill on the Tour's Florida swing, and to take a few weeks to recuperate at home in Scottsdale, Ariz.
