Woods was taken off the course in a golf cart and was seen limping from the cart to his car in the players' parking lot. Overhead cameras showed course attendants delivering ice packs to Woods through his car's driver-side window before the car left the premises. As he drove out of the parking lot, Woods told a press officer that it was an injury to his left leg.

Glenn Greenspan, a representative of Woods, later issued this statement on his behalf.

"I felt tightness in my left Achilles when I was warming up this morning, and it got progressively worse throughout the day. After hitting the tee shot at 12, I decided to withdraw. In the past I might've decided to continue to play, but this time I decided to do what I thought was necessary."

Woods, who is currently scheduled to play the Arnold Palmer Invitational in two weeks and the Masters in the first week of April, said he would get the "Achilles evaluated sometime early next week."

Woods has suffered several injuries to his left leg through the years, most recently at the 2011 Masters, when he hurt his knee and Achilles' tendon. That injury forced Woods to withdraw from the Players Championship in May, and he missed several months and two majors while rehabbing.

He has had a total of four surgeries on his left knee, the most recent occurring after the 2008 U.S. Open, which he won while playing with a torn ACL and two fractures in his lower leg.

Sunday's withdrawal came after a 321-yard drive into the rough on the 12th hole at Doral. He attempted to hit a cut, and he was clearly grimacing. He then turned to his playing partner Webb Simpson and said, "I'm done."

Woods has not won a major title since that 2008 U.S. Open, and his last full-field victory on the PGA Tour came at the 2009 BMW Championship. Two months later, news of his sex scandal hit the press.
