Sergio Garcia pulls out of Deutsche Bank
FARMINGDALE, N.Y. -- Sergio Garcia, who is coming off his first win on Tour in four years, and fired a second-round 68 at the Barclays on Friday to share the 36-hole lead with Nick Watney (69), said he will skip the second week of the FedEx Cup playoffs, the Deutsche Bank Championship.
He had previously committed to the tournament, but withdrew Friday.
"Obviously, Boston is a place I enjoy playing and I've done well in it and I love the course," he said. "But you know, with the schedule that's coming, I have to think that I have a chance at getting to the Tour Championship. So having to play six weeks in a row and then one week off, and then the Tour Championship and the Ryder Cup is just too much. Everybody knows how important the Ryder Cup is for me, and I want to be fully there. I want to be feeling strong so I can help my team.
"I need to take a week off somewhere," he added, "and unfortunately that's the only one I can think of."
Garcia and Watney are a shot ahead of 49-year-old Vijay Singh (67) and 46-year-old Bob Estes (66).
