Truth & Rumors: Rory McIlroy explains HSBC absence

After receiving criticism for skipping the WGC-HBSC Champions, Rory McIlroy had some explaining to do during Wednesday's press conference.

As reported by the Independent, McIlroy traveled instead to Bulgaria to watch girlfriend Carolina Wozniacki play tennis.

"It's a big event, it's a tough one to miss.

"I need those weeks where I can just completely escape from this, from my life.

"Spending time with Caroline helps me to do that. That's the biggest challenge for us going forward.

Following the conclusion of the regular PGA Tour season and before the European Tour's Race to Dubai heated up, Rory competed in all four FedEx Cup events, the Ryder Cup, the Turkish Airlines World Golf Finals, the BMW Masters and a one day exhibition against Tiger Woods.

"I can't play every week. If I had I would have played five in a row finishing the season and after playing Turkey and Ryder Cup and all the FedEx Cup stuff it's just too much."
