Here's an Oldie but a Goodie: 104-year-old golfer takes a break from the game

Posted at 11:30 AM by Josh Sens |

At 104, Dr. Wally Sennott isn’t going to shoot his age.

Not this summer, anyway.

As the Baltimore Sun first reported, the retired radiologist and Towson, Md., resident is taking a little break from the game.

He’ll get back to it this fall, when temperatures in his neck of the woods cool off.

For now, though, it’s just too sweltering at Pine Ridge Golf Course, his home track, where Sennott, an honorary member, is well-known for his Fred Funk-like game.

“He doesn’t it it very far, but he hits it straight,” fellow Pine Ridge golfer, Jim Ridenour, told the Sun. “His short game, including putting, is very good. He’s just wonderful to play with, very encouraging. He’s an inspiration to all of us guys who are over 80.”

It’s been a big week for inspirational fogies, what with 77-year-old Gary Player pulling a Lena Dunham in ESPN’s latest Body Issue.

Unlike the Man in Black, the centenarian Sennott opted for an understated photo op, appearing in the Sun alongside golf clubs that look about as old as their owner.

Born in Vermont, Sennott was a three-sport athlete in high school and played golf briefly while in college at Colgate University, though never to much acclaim. His lowest-ever score is 99, carded well before his 99th birthday. He’s come close -- but no cigar -- to a hole-in-one.

As the mercury and humidity soar in his home state, Sennott plans to hang out mostly at his apartment at the Pickersgill Retirement Community, where he has his 102-year-old wife, Adelaide (they’ve been married for 75 years) to keep him young.
