Wisconsin golf club offers 9/11-themed discount

Posted at 11:32 AM by Pete Madden |

Tumbledown Trails Golf Course in Verona, Wisc., placed an advertisement in Monday's Wisconsin State Journal offering nine holes of golf for $9.11 in order to "commemorate" Wednesday's 12th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

The backlash was so severe that the course issued a public apology via Facebook and pledged to donate some of the day's proceeds to the 9/11 Memorial in New York City.

According to Mark Watts, part-owner of Tumbledown Trails, this is the third year the 9/11 anniversary discount has been made available, but the first year it's caused any outrage.

"This wasn't a moneymaking thing," said Watts. "We weren't trying to profit. We just wanted to find a unique way to keep this horrible tragedy in the public eye ... Now we're getting death threats over it ... The sheriff's department is sitting in the clubhouse right now."
