Rory McIlroy three shots back after round 1 at Korea Open

Rory McIlroy tees off on No. 11 during the opening round of the Kolon Korea Open in Chonan, South Korea.

In his first tournament action in more than a month, Rory McIlroy birdied three of his final five holes to finish his opening round at the Kolon Korea Open with 1-under round of 70.

This was McIlroy's first competitive appearance since bowing out of the FedEx Cup race after finishing 59th at the BMW Championship on September 7th.

“I felt I was a little rusty after the four weeks off,” the 24-year-old Northern Irishman said, “but I battled back nicely and to end up under par for the day wasn’t too bad.”

Jang Ik-jae leads the tournament at 4-under. McIlroy, currently ranked sixth in the World Rankings, is three shots back in 12th place. He tied for third at the Korean Open in '09 and was the runner-up in '11.

McIlroy has not won a PGA Tour event since the 2012 BMW Championship.
