Thomas Ross, a 73-year-old from Nairn, Scotland, reportedly drowned Sunday while trying to retrieve his golf ball from a lake while playing at Dunas de Donana Golf Club in southwest Spain, according to the Daily Record.

According to the reports, Ross – who couldn't swim – fell into the lake while playing the 5th hole, was alive after being pulled from the lake by his friend who was a doctor, but died shortly after.

Ross was on a golf getaway with five of his fellow members from Narin Golf Club, where Ross had been a member for 33 years. Yvonne Forgan, the secretary at the club, released a statement regarding the incident.

“We heard this morning. It’s an absolute tragedy. We’re all at sixes and sevens here. We don’t know too much about it, only that he hit a shot into the water and went to retrieve it. Whether he took a turn or not, we don’t know. Tom’s been a member here for 33 years. He was passionate about his golf and had a handicap of 17. He will be sorely missed.”
