Dustin Johnson, Zach Johnson bow out of Seoul event due to 'perceived unrest'

Posted at 11:52 AM by Cameron Morfit

Dustin-JohnsonDustin Johnson and Zach Johnson have withdrawn from the European tour's Ballantine's Championship due to "perceived unrest on the Korean Peninsula," according to a statement from the sponsor:

Ballantine’s is disappointed to announce that Dustin Johnson and Zach Johnson have informed us they will no longer be attending the Ballantine’s Championship. They have reached this decision following perceived unrest on the Korean Peninsula and can no longer assure their commitment to this year’s event.

Ballantine’s and event organisers, The European Tour, would like to reiterate that the tournament is going ahead as planned with a full field of European, Asian and Korean PGA Tour members. Ballantine’s has been kept fully up to date on relevant issues and The European Tour has also been liaising with key decision makers, including the Foreign Office, who have not warned of any increased risk to those travelling to or within the country.

Paul Casey, Paul Lawrie, Louis Oosthuizen and Y.E. Yang are among those who are still scheduled to play in this week's Euro tour event in Seoul.

There has been political tension in the region since the United Nations imposed sanctions on North Korea for its third nuclear test in February. The country is said to be planning a fourth test, and according to a South Korean news agency report has moved short-range missile launchers into position for a test launch.

Dustin Johnson paired with girlfriend's dad Wayne Gretzky at AT&T

Posted at 5:55 PM by Cameron Morfit

PaulinaDustin Johnson, who won the season-opening Hyundai TOC with the comely Paulina Gretzky in his gallery [right], and who has been all over Twitter with Paulina ever since, will be paired with her father, the former hockey great Wayne Gretzky, in this week's AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am.

The pairing is among several intriguing pro-am combos at this week's tournament, among them Jason Day and San Francisco 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh, and Robert Garrigus and pitcher Justin Verlander.

Gretzky, who grew up in Brantford, Ontario, Canada, where he had a chance to play with the legendary Moe Norman, is an avid golfer who has had memberships to several clubs, among them Whisper Rock in Scottsdale, Ariz., and Sherwood C.C. in Westlake Village, Calif. He plays off an 11 handicap.

Paulina Gretzky, 24, is a model, actress and singer, and is the oldest of Wayne Gretzky and actress Janet Jones's five children. Paulina first made a splash with several suggestive Twitter photos in 2011 and remains active on the social media website

Johnson, who in 2012 was followed by LPGA siren Natalie Gulbis at the Hyundai TOC -- Johnson denied the relationship but withdrew from the following week's Sony Open -- is aiming for his third victory at the star-studded AT&T at Pebble Beach, Spyglass Hill and Monterey Peninsula Country Club. He posted a picture on his Twitter account Wednesday of himself and Wayne Gretzky wearing yellow bucket hats

Truth & Rumors: Paulina Gretzky tweets photo of Dustin Johnson and her together

Posted at 2:14 PM by Samantha Glover

Just days after Dustin Johnson and Paulina Gretzky were spotted together in Maui, Gretzky tweeted out a photo of the two together.

The picture, accompanied by text about heading to Gretzky's mother's birthday dinner, adds to speculation that the pair are dating despite Johnson's denial of the relationship in a report by Golf Channel's Jason Sobel.

When asked about his relationship with her after the tournament, Johnson responded, “Does it matter?” When informed that inquiring minds wanted to know, he followed, “I don’t know who you’re talking about,” while a huge smile splashed across his face.

Dustin Johnson and Wayne Gretzky's daughter seen together at Kapalua

Dustin Johnson has been spending time in Maui with Paulina Gretzky [right], Wayne Gretzky's daughter, according to Sports Illustrated's Alan Shipnuck. Johnson, who was leading the weather-shortened Hyundai Tournament of Champions after 36 holes, was spotted this week with Gretzky at the Plantation Course at Kapalua.

If the laid-back Johnson looked strangely comfortable on the Plantation Course it comes from the extra time he's spent here. Needing to break in new irons and a new driver, Johnson arrived early and played six practice rounds. (That also allowed him to spend some quality time with his new squeeze Paulina Gretzky.)

Gretzky, 24, is a model, actress and singer, and the eldest of Wayne Gretzky and Janet Jones's five children. She became an Internet sensation in late 2011 when her dad reportedly made her take down her Twitter account after she posted racy pictures of herself. If you're intellectually curious about these photos, Fox Sports has archived them here, and Gretzky's Twitter account has been restored.

Johnson has a habit of bringing girlfriends to the PGA Tour season opener. Last year, he was spotted with LPGA Tour star Natalie Gulbis at Kapalua. When reports suggested that Johnson withdrew from the 2012 Sony Open the next week to patch things up with his previous girlfriend, Johnson denied the relationship with Gulbis, according to the Associated Press.

"For people to say I went home to repair the relationship is completely false," Johnson said. "We're not in a relationship. And yes, me and Natalie have spent some time together, but we're not in a relationship. There's all kinds of stuff going on in the media. Actually, some of this stuff is comical."

Pros at Tiger's tournament react to ban on anchored putting stroke

Posted at 3:51 PM by Jessica Marksbury

P1-Webb

Golf Magazine's Jessica Marksbury tracked down several pros, including U.S. Open winner Webb Simpson, right, during pro-am day at the World Challenge in Thousand Oaks, Calif. Here's what they had to say about the proposed anchoring ban that was announced today:

Keegan Bradley: "I'm just going to go along with what the USGA says. They're making the rules. I don't agree with it, but I understand that they're trying to protect the game the best they can. I'm going to go with the flow. [The ban] is not going to take place for another three years, so I've got some time to adjust."

Mark O'Meara: "I've always felt like it was probably a little bit of an advantage when you can anchor a putter somewhere against your body, so it's almost like a teaching aid, so I don't have a problem with [the ruling]. I think it's probably the right call. But I don't know about [the three-year grace period]. I'd put it in effect right away. If you're going to make a call, let's not go with a 'fiscal cliff' deal. Let's just make the call. Maybe a one-year grace period, but not three years."

Dustin Johnson: "I don't care. It really doesn't bother me one way or the other. I'll putt with a short putter."

Bo Van Pelt: "It's tough, just because so many guys have used anchoring for a long time, and to go back in retrospect and change something that's been allowed. I use the short putter, but there was a period in my career where I did use the belly putter and kind of went away from it, so I think you just kind of wait back and see. There are a lot of opinions and talk out there right now, and until they put something in stone, it's not going to affect me. I'm using a short putter now for the rest of my career, so it will be interesting to see what comes forward."

Webb Simpson: "I knew it was coming, and I don't feel any different than what I've been saying this whole time. It is what it is."

Bubba Watson: "My reaction is: three years from now? Some of the people are probably going to be retired by then. ... I don't understand. They make a rule, but [it goes into effect] three years from now. If they make a rule, why wouldn't it be immediate? It's just funny how it is. But a lot of people have some disagreements about it. But they changed the grooves and now they're changing the anchoring. If they make the rule change, then it's what they do, you know?"

Jason Day: "I haven't really thought about it. I can see it from both sides. I mean, some people think it might be a training aid, but you still have to putt the ball. It doesn't matter, you still have to hole the ball. I don't know where I'm at on it. Indifferent, really. I'm just staying out of the picture because a lot of guys use it, and I don't want to piss anyone off, so I'm staying out of it."

Hunter Mahan: "I guess I've never been a fan of anchoring. It kind of defeats the purpose to some of the game, and what the purpose of putting is, because putting is all about pressure and it's all about feel and it's all about handling adversity, handling things. With the anchoring in there it kind of takes that out of play, so I think it just kind of defeated the purpose. And I think the fact that kids or anyone just starting the game was starting with the belly putter was the main issue, so I think they had to act. You feel bad for guys who have never used a short putter before. I know guys like Keegan and Webb haven't used [a short putter] much in their whole careers, so I think that's unfortunate. But I think it's for the betterment of the game to make this ruling the way they did. And there's plenty of time, three full years. And I know Webb's putted with short putters before, and most all the guys that use a belly putter have used a short putter before, so I don't think it's going to be a drastic change for them. They're good players; they know how to adjust to things."

Jim Furyk: "We as a Tour were given a heads-up that something may be coming, so right now I think I'll go with what the Tour stated, that we really need to look at what they're trying to do and see how it affects us as a Tour, how it affects the game, and how it affects the players on our Tour and kind of figure out what we want to do from there. It would be kind of foolish for me, because of being on the board and because I represent all the players of the PGA Tour, to go out there and give you my personal opinion, just because I represent something much bigger and greater than that."

Brandt Snedeker: "I think that they're doing what they think is right. I'm 100 percent supportive of them. I've been against the belly putter for the last couple of years, and I think they're doing what they think is in the best interest of the game of golf in the long run, not what's in the best interest of the game of golf right now, but in the next 20 years of where they see the golf game going. I think we, as players, are kind of short-sighted, for the most part. We see how it affects us and what we do for a living, but the USGA has a responsibility to the bigger part of the game to make sure that we're heading in the right direction for the future of golf, and I support them 100 percent."

Graeme McDowell: "I thought they were very careful and very considered in their statements. They came up with the only verdict that they could have, really. Something had to be done. The integrity of the putting stroke had changed, and it's important going forward that they nip it in the bud, and I don't think anyone is surprised by what they've come up with. It's important it was done, and I think it's good for the game going forward."

Video: Watch Jesper Parnevik go 'Gangnam Style'

Posted at 12:50 PM by Mark Dee

We regret to report that the "Gangnam Style" craze has made it all the way to (gulp) Jesper Parnevik.

By now, anyone with a) electronics and b) senses has been exposed, willingly or otherwise, to the song "Gangnam Style" by the Korean rapper PSY. The original video, which went up on YouTube in July, has more than 530 million views. There are hundreds of tribute videos. We are about to show you Jesper Parnevik's.

The video is more or less what you'd expect from a man who used to eat volcanic sand as a dietary supplement, and had his fillings replaced with porcelain to remedy allergies. Be sure to keep an eye out for some familiar faces, including Fredrik Jacobson and Dustin Johnson. If you ever feel overwhelmed by how far these pros hit the ball, or by how many birdies they make, you may refer to this video as often as you need. It will knock them down a peg each time.

Hat tip to the Golf Channel for drawing our attention to this...thing.

Report: Tiger Woods couldn't sleep after Ryder Cup loss

Posted at 11:39 AM by Mike Walker

Tiger Woods's Sunday singles match against Francesco Molinari at the Ryder Cup in Medinah ended up not mattering very much because the Europeans clinched the Cup when Martin Kaymer beat Steve Stricker, but Woods took losing the Cup hard, according to The Express UK.

While Europe were partying with the Ryder Cup, Woods confessed the following day to USA captain Davis Love that he had lain awake all night wondering just how a 10-6 lead could have been squandered.

Woods earned just half a point from his four matches at Medinah –- a career low in a contest in which he has tasted victory just once in seven appearances.

“Tiger did not sleep a wink,” said Love. “It has been tough for all of us. I’m going to Las Vegas to play this week and I’m trying to find a bag without USA written on it!”

This week, Love is playing in the Justin Timberlake Shriners Hospitals for Children Open in Las Vegas, where he talked about the reaction of the American players to their stunning loss in the Ryder Cup after holding a large lead going into the final day.

Love on Phil Mickelson:

Phil and Amy sat with [indiscernible] and I at the elevator. They were the last ones to leave the ninth floor, and we sat there for a half an hour and I finally realized they just didn't want to leave. They had a big airplane and were going home to see their kids, but didn't want to leave and it to be over. I think that's how most of us felt. It was hard not to get up Monday morning and put your team clothes on and go play again.

Love on Dustin Johnson:

In the end, I think Dustin Johnson said it best.  Everybody is feeling sorry for themselves and he says, Man, it's just golf.  They knocked in a bunch of putts and our lipped out.  There's nothing we can do about it.  You know, that really did sum it up.

Love on his captain's picks:

I'm happy with the decision. Now, I love Rickie Fowler and Bill Haas and Hunter Mahan, Nick Watney. They are the future of the Ryder Cup. Sure, maybe they would have done better, but I love the team I had. They gave it their all. Most importantly, they represented their country on and off the golf course.
