Video: Watch the 'magicians' of the European Tour

Posted at 10:47 AM by Mark Dee

This one just in from the mutual admiration society most of us know as the European Tour.

Leave it to the Euros to come up with this simple, brilliant idea: What happens when you mix golf…and magic. Apparently, a lot of gasps and wows delivered in various, accented ways.

Here's the extended promo issued by the tour, which features the British magician DMC and some faces you may well recognize. We're not sure what's more impressive: Richard Finch's back-handed birdie, or the illusions...

What strikes your fancy? Let us know in comments below.

Weigh in: Should Francesco Molinari have conceded his match with Tiger Woods?

Posted at 2:43 PM by Golf.com

One detail lost in the shuffle of the Europeans' big comeback on Sunday was the way the final match ended. With 14 points and the Cup in the bag, some thought it would have been a nice gesture for Francesco Molinari to concede the 18th hole to Tiger Woods.

Even Molinari thought about giving Tiger the match, but he was overruled by the team's captain, Jose Maria Olazabal. "I thought about giving him the halve on the fairway, but then the captain was there, the chairman was the there, they told me, it's not the same, winning or halving, so get focused and do your best, and that's what I did," Molinari said. "So I just tried to win the hole, to win the tournament, basically."

Sports Illustrated's Alan Shipnuck shared his thoughts on the issue via Twitter:

Francesco Molinari also told his story:

What do you think? Should Molinari have conceded? Did Olazabal do the right thing? Share your comments in the space below.

Truth & Rumors: Faldo foresees Ryder Cup tie; Ollie heads home to 'chill'

Posted at 10:11 AM by Mark Dee

Nick Faldo keeps finding things to say about the Ryder Cup.

The former world No. 1 turned professional-golf-talker -- and unsuccessful 2008 European Ryder Cup captain -- said in an interview with Reuters that these two teams are evenly matched. So evenly matched, in fact, that there's a good chance the matches will end in the Cup's first tie in 23 years.

"On paper I think it's incredibly evenly matched," Faldo said. "Half-jokingly I said at the beginning of the season that we haven't had a tie for quite a while but suddenly now that notion doesn't seem so far off. Maybe a tie could be the result this year."

Meanwhile, one man who's done talking is current Euro skipper Jose Maria Olazabal.

Following a T-63 at last week's Italian Open, Ollie said that this week he plans on "chilling at home" and working on his speech for the Ryder Cup opening ceremony on Sept. 26. According to Karl MacGinty of Belfast Telegraph, Ollie feels "as nervous as a long-tailed cat in a room full of rocking chairs" about giving that speech.

In keeping with that low profile, Ollie seems content to stay mum on the Cup until then. After his speech, Ollie said that  Europe's "clubs will have to do the talking," clearly something he feels comfortable as a short-tailed cat about getting underway.

Faldo has set the bar historically low for Olazabal. During the 2008 opening ceremony at Valhalla, Faldo  introduced Soren Hansen as Soren Stenson, asked Graeme McDowell if he was Irish or Northern Irish, and added, with turn-of-the-century humor, that Padraig Harrington had "hit as many golf balls as potatoes grown in Ireland."

Here's a hint, Ollie: Don't trip. Just give us the names, then clear the stage for those clubs to give that speech your guys have been preparing. And hope it doesn't end in a tie.

Truth & Rumors: Padraig Harrington says 'Dogs in the street knew I wasn’t getting a pick'

Posted at 3:06 PM by Mark Dee

Way back last week, when Padraig Harrington was torching Bethpage Black and blowing gingerly on the fading embers of his Ryder Cup chances, a lot of digital ink was spilled dissecting Harrington's sour relationship with European captain Jose Maria Olazabal.

Well, as expected, Olazabal didn't pick Paddy, announcing instead that Nicolas Colsaerts and Ian Poulter will head to Medinah in September.

Still, as captains do, Olazabal called Harrington to inform him that he wasn't getting the nod. Harrington's reaction? Unsurprised, according to the Irish Golf Desk.

"The dogs in the street knew I wasn’t getting a pick, so it wasn’t a hard phone call whatsoever," Harrington told Brian Keogh on Monday. “It was a polite phone call from José. I knew the result. Obviously it wasn’t news to me. I was quite comfortable with his two picks. I think they’ll do very well."

Olazabal, speaking at Gleneagles in Scotland after the announcement, said that his phone call to Harrington was the toughest one he had to make, according to The Scotsman. But Olazabal sounded pretty stern in his comments:

“I felt I had to make the phone call to Padraig more than anyone else,” said Olazabal, who also got in touch with David Lynn, Rafael Cabrero-Bello, Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano and Alvaro Quiros after they’d fallen just short as well.

“Padraig is a very good player, but you could also say that about the likes of Paul Casey, Henrik Stenson and Robert Karlsson, other former Ryder Cup players. The fact is that he [Harrington] didn’t perform well enough. He’s a great champion, but Thomas [Bjorn] was also ahead of him on the list.”

Ryder Cup Press Conference: Davis Love III and Jose Maria Olazabal talk teams, picks

Posted at 9:05 AM by Mark Dee

This week's PGA Championship is the last chance for Americans to pick up Ryder Cup points. And majors count double. With 51 days until the first ball is struck at Medinah, team captains Davis Love III and Jose Maria Olazabal fielded questions at Kiawah Island. But they weren't asked about their chances this week on the Ocean Course. The two men talked captain's picks and course setups and shared a few memories on Wednesday afternoon:

MODERATOR: José Maria, start with you, please. Some thoughts about how your team at this point is shaping up.
Olazabal:
Well, at the moment, I'm really happy. Every one of those ten players that are in today have Ryder Cup experience, all of them; in that regard, I'm really pleased. Obviously there are certain players that might not be at their best at the moment, but as you said, there is 51 days to go, and I'm pretty sure that they will be okay by then.

MODERATOR: Thank you. Davis, comments on your team. The top eight, again, will be in by the end of this Sunday.
Love III:
Right. Obviously a big week for us, the PGA Championship and the end of the points on Sunday. I know there's several guys that are working really hard to try to make the team. So hopefully they will relax and just play the PGA this week and work their way in. But our team is shaping up very well. A lot of guys are playing well, as José Maria said, all our top really 12 to 15 guys seem to be playing very, very well.

We are very excited about it. It was a great win for Keegan [Bradley] last week and a great putt on the last hole, and obviously Jim [Furyk] is playing very well week-in and week-out now. A lot of guys-- there's not a whole lot of movement, but we have a whole lot of guys playing very, very well top to bottom.

MODERATOR: Thank you, both. And again, officially Tiger Woods is the only player on the United States Team who has officially clinched a spot for the U.S.

What about Mr. Woods?
Q. Haven't asked much about Tiger, and obviously he is your one guy right now that's in. Wondering, first of all, if you've talked to him about maybe any pressure he's feeling, not been part of a winning team since 1999, and have you picked his brain a little bit about the secret to Medinah, because he seems to have figured it out from an individual standpoint?
Love III:
I've talked to him about several things but not about specifically how to play Medinah. I played with him at least two rounds one year when he won there, and I saw how he did it. He hit it really long and straight and made a lot of putts, and that seemed to work real well for him.

But like José Maria said, this is a big week and a lot of those things are starting to come together. Obviously when the team is set, then I can say, who wants to go play, and who doesn't know the course. Tiger doesn't need to go, but maybe he can tell us something to do when we do go.

I think these guys in this day and age, you see-- I heard maybe Geoff Ogilvy came here or somebody came, Adam Scott came and played early or Tiger came and played early. Guys know how to prepare now and I think don't have to tell them a whole lot about how to get ready for a golf course. I'm relying on Tiger and Stricker and Furyk, like I said earlier, to help me make those decisions and help me make assistant captain's decisions and things like that, and the golf course is going to be a big one. Luckily we know Medinah pretty well. Guys on both sides, they know the golf course pretty well. We are pretty used to it. Maybe there's some Keegan Bradleys and Rory McIlroys that are younger that don't know it. But a lot of our guys have seen it or seen something very similar to it.

Good omen for Jim Furyk?
In addition to mentioning him above, Love refered postively to Furyk and other Ryder Cup veterans -- notably Steve Stricker and Phil Mickelson -- multiple times in the press conference. Both Furyk (11th in points) and Stricker (10th) will need a Captain's selection if they don't make up ground this week.

Love, though, didn't say too much about who he's considering with his picks:

Well, I've said several times, we'll be plugging holes, matching pairings, things like that. Obviously if Steve Stricker was on the outside, we have a guy that likes to play with him, that's a lock...So you look at things like that. You want some hot putters. You might want another long-ball hitter. But I think this week is important, because it ends the points. But it's just as important as any of the guys who play at Greensboro or who plays well at Barclays. That's what we're looking for.

A Seve story, for old time's sake:
Olazabal: Regarding moments or something to remember from The Ryder Cup that we played here in'91 with Seve [Ballesteros], I would go to one of the first matches that we played, the way we started. We were hitting the ball all over the place. We ended up winning the match, and, you know, certain moments. For instance, I remember the second hole, the par5. He snap-hooked the tee shot way left into the water and I have to drop it on the ladies tee, that's how bad he hit the tee shot. (Laughter.)

I hit it onto the fairway. Obviously the U.S. Team was, like always, right in the middle of the fairway. They hit the second shot short of the green in two; Seve hit a 4-iron and blocked it right into the trees, left me against the tree, and I have to chip it out. And obviously we are lying five and the U.S. Team is like two, and I look at Seve, and I said, what the hell are we doing here, let's pick the ball up and go to the third hole. And in those days, the green had water front and water on the back. Seve said, "Just hold on a second. If we chip-and-putt, we make 7." Yes, correct, Seve. That's true.

"Well, if they miss the chip and hit it in the water and drop it and chip it on to the green and make two putts, what do they do? Seven. So we still have a chance. Let's go." (Laughter.)

So you know, that's one of the stories.

Truth & Rumors: Casey Martin close to qualifying for U.S. Open

Posted at 11:52 AM by Mick Rouse

The last time the U.S. Open visited the Olympic Club in San Francisco it was 1998 and Casey Martin rode in his golf cart all the way to a T23 finish. Now, in between coaching at the University of Oregon, he is on the cusp of making his grand return fourteen years later, reports Ron Kroichick of the San Francisco Chronicle.

Martin, who suffers from a birth defect known as Klippel Trenaunay Weber syndrome in his right leg, created buzz as he filed a lawsuit against the PGA Tour in 1997 that would allow him to use a cart in competition.

As the appeals process began its three-year odyssey - the tour argued that walking is a fundamental part of the game and that no player should be permitted to use a cart - media attention engulfed Martin. It crested at the Olympic Club, from his Monday practice round with Woods to his first two rounds alongside 1994 Masters champion Jose Maria Olazabal.

In 2001, Martin successfully won his Supreme Court decision against the PGA Tour and is now only 36 holes away from bringing his golf cart back to Olympic.

It remains a wild longshot, but he could create one of the coolest stories of this 112th U.S. Open. Martin hadn't even entered Open qualifying in five years, because his coaching duties leave him little time to practice or play, but he couldn't resist the nostalgic lure of Olympic.

He went out and shot 2-under-par 70 in local qualifying May 7 in Vancouver, Wash., good enough to advance to the next stage. Martin will take his crack at sectional qualifying - a grueling, 36-hole test - June 4 in Creswell, Ore.

"It's going to have to be an act of God," he said before advancing through locals. "I'm doing this to see if you can catch lightning in a bottle."

Just imagine the circus Martin will generate if he really does qualify for next month's Open. His story would come full circle - from one U.S. Open at the Olympic Club to the next, from aspiring tour pro and legal crusader to content college coach and improbable Open qualifier.

While the pressure is now fully on Martin, he did get a bit of a reprieve from the USGA while filling out his entry form for the U.S. Open and the elaborate application requesting a cart for competition.

Given his history - more than a bit well-documented - Martin asked some folks at the USGA if he really needed to complete all the paperwork. They told him to skip it.

OSU misses the cut

For the first time in school history, Oklahoma State University's men's golf team has failed to advance to the NCAA Championship, reports Golf Channel.

The Cowboys failed to qualify for the finals at Riviera C.C. when they finished eighth out of 13 teams in the Ann Arbor (Mich.) regional tournament on Saturday. The five-man team finished at 11 over par in the 54-hole event. The team was 14 shots shy of the fifth-place cutoff to advance to the finals, to be played May 29-June 3.

Oklahoma State had advanced to the NCAA championship in each year of the program's existence, dating back to 1947.

During the last 60 seasons, OSU's golf program has notched 10 national championships, 8 individual national championships and 49 conference championships while claiming alumni such as Hunter Mahan, Rickie Fowler, Charles Howell III, Bob Tway and Trip Kuehne.

Two-time defending champs Augusta State also missed out on the opportunity to claim a third consecutive title, finishing four shots out of qualifying through the Athens, Ga. regional.

Deron Williams hits Chelsea Piers

Because the New Jersey Nets are absolutely terrible, Deron Williams has a lot of time on his hands these days before he is inevitably traded to either the Mavericks or the Heat. So, like any golf aficionado in New York City with some time to kill, Williams made his way to Chelsea Piers.

Color me impressed. Hank Haney, on the other hand?

Looks like D.A. Points is reaching for a dinner date, though.

On-course rivals

Though the exact details are uncertain, a reader sent in this photo to Deadspin of two newlyweds posing in their Miami Dolphins garb with New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan while he enjoyed a round of golf.

Xlarge

It's unclear whether or not the couple were married while wearing their Miami Dolphin jerseys or just had them on hand because that's the sort of thing Miami fans do. Either way, good on Ryan to take the time to pose with his fierce rivals. What was not documented, however, was Sal Alosi tripping the bride as she made her way down the aisle.

Truth & Rumors: Olazabal busted, Masters fan steals sand and Zinger zaps Tiger

Posted at 11:26 AM by Mike Walker

Olazabal mug shotJose Maria Olazabal can't drive 65
Jose Maria Olazabal was pulled over for speeding after the Masters Champions Dinner on Tuesday night, according to The Savannah Morning News.

Ehsanipoor said the two-time Masters Champ was going 97 mph on Ga. 21 in a 65 mph zone when he was stopped by a deputy.

Olazabal apologized and told the deputy he was leaving the Masters Golf tournament in Augusta and was traveling to another tournament, Ehsanipoor said.

Olazabal was allowed to follow the deputy to the sheriff’s office where he posted a cash bond of $621 and was released.

Enter Sandman
A Masters patron was busted Sunday after he attempted to steal a cup of Augusta National's famous white sand from a bunker, according to The Augusta Chronicle.

Richmond County sheriff’s Capt. Scott Gay said Clayton Price Baker, of Ohio, slipped under the ropes following the tournament and attempted to put the sand in his cup.

After a short foot chase by Augusta National security and sheriff’s deputies, Baker was apprehended and charged with disorderly conduct.

You won't believe it, but police say Baker had been drinking.

Azinger calls Tiger's behavior 'embarrassment to the game'
After Tiger Woods drop-kicked a club on his way to shooting 75 on Friday at Augusta National, former Ryder Cup captain and 1993 PGA Champion Paul Azinger vented his disgust on Sirius Radio, according to Hank Gola of The New York Daily News.

“Tiger’s antics this week were an embarrassment to the game, to the membership at Augusta,” Zinger said. “I was really disappointed to see him carry on that way. He’s not trying to endear himself to anybody. And after he won Bay Hill I thought, ‘here we go again, this is going to be Tiger just kicking butt and taking names.’ I don’t know. I thought he acted like the south end of a northbound mule.”

As for Woods’ golf, Azinger said, “I think his brain is full of swing thoughts, not swing feelings."

"He thinks he needs to know it all so he can fix what’s wrong, but that’s not what happened here,” he went on. “When it started to go off he didn’t have a go-to shot, there was nothing he could do. I can’t compare my career to Tiger Woods’ career for sure, but I’ll say this, in the 28 years I’ve played golf for a living I’ve never been as lost as he looked out there.”

Truth & Rumors: Want your own golf course? It's a buyer's market

Posted at 11:01 AM by Alan Bastable

Got some bonus money to burn? Looking for somewhere to spend that tax refund? Fed up with slow play? Then buy your own golf course already. The timing is right, according to Bloomberg’s Christine Garvey, who reports that the median price for a standalone 18-hole course is now just $3 million, down from $4.5 million in 2006.

“Lack of financing is really causing a discount to value and investors are taking advantage,” Steven Ekovich, Florida- based director of Marcus & Millichap National Golf & Resort Properties Group, said in a telephone interview. “Golf courses may never be as cheap as they are today.”

Just ask Donald Trump, who recently bought Doral Golf Resort & Spa in Miami for a pittance: a mere $150 million. Actually, Garvey did ask Trump:

“They built too many courses during the Tiger Boom and now they’re closing and disappearing,” Trump said. “At some point enough will disappear that golf will be a really good business.”

In the meantime, you better be prepared to pay up front...

Golf course investment is also expected to increase this year, though it’s predicted to be a “cash heavy,” market until financing returns on a national platform, according to Marcus & Millichap.

Until then Trump, [golf course investor Peter] Nanula and other investors are seeking out properties. “I’m only able to do it because I can write a check,” said Trump. “Banks aren’t so generous these days so if you can’t pay with cash you might as well forget about it.”

Olazabal’s Ryder Cup options runneth over

European Ryder Cup captain Jose Maria Olazabal has a nice problem: a wealth of seriously talented players who, at the moment, aren’t guaranteed a spot in the 2012 matches in Chicago, reports Bob Harig of ESPN:

…Several highly ranked players find themselves on the outside looking in at this point. Casey is ranked 27th in the world, Ian Poulter is 29th and Robert Karlsson 31st, and they would be in need of a captain's pick—again, we're way early on this—if the race ended today. Padraig Harrington, a six-time team member, is well out of the running, as his world ranking has slipped. Same for reigning British Open champion Darren Clarke.

Two members of the 2010 team—brothers Francesco and Edoardo Molinari—are also well outside the top 10. Same for Miguel Angel Jimenez.

Former Ryder Cup hero Graeme McDowell—who is currently 10th on the Euro points list—looks at the situation his way:

"There are probably 20 guys vying for those 12 spots. The European team is going to be seriously strong, we've got Sergio playing well, a number of great players.

"My schedule this year was all about picking up some Ryder Cup points. If you get too disconnected from the automatic spots, you've got a huge task on your hands. I'm not playing in Europe much in the first five months, and when I go back, I don't want to have too much catching up to do."

Rock and roll 'em: KISS course opens in Vegas

The highly anticipated Kiss-themed mini-golf course debuted in Vegas on Thursday—and the reviews were stellar. John Przybys of the Las Vegas Review-Journal sets the tone with his lead…

The 18th hole requires you to make a forceful putt along Gene Simmons' outstretched tongue.

Well, of course it does.

What else would you expect at a miniature golf course inspired by KISS, the iconic rock band that introduced fire-breathing, fake blood and the power of a few good chords to generations of teenagers?
