This week Golf Magazine's Cameron Morfit is covering the season-opening Hyundai Tournament of Champions in Maui. After two days of high winds, heavy rain and virtually no golf, Morfit tweeted the following Top 10 list.

Mindy Lawton, the Orlando waitress who became world famous after she admitted to having an affair with Tiger Woods, was sentenced to a year in jail for a drunk-driving accident, according to The Orlando Sentinel. 

Woods and the woman met, Mindy Lawton claimed, when she worked as a waitress at a Perkins Restaurant near his home in Isleworth, serving him his favorite egg-white omelet with broccoli.

Shortly after a December 2009 account of her affair, international fascination with the sex scandal linking Woods to multiple lovers was so widespread that a search of Lawton's name on Google produced 720,000 hits and indicated her alleged relationship had been reported by more than 600 newspapers, magazines and other media outlets.

Friday's conviction stems from a Jan. 10, 2009, crash. Lawton ran a red light at the corner of Hiawassee and Old Winter Garden roads and rammed her sedan into a Honda compact, according to court records and interviews. The other driver, Louis Ramirez Jr., suffered extensive injuries including a broken back, ribs, facial injuries and memory loss.

Graeme McDowell poised to pass Mickelson in world rankings

Graeme McDowell proved again why he’s the hottest player in golf on Sunday, posting a 62 to finish third at the Tournament of Champions in Maui, and these strong finishes are propelling him up the Official World Golf Rankings, according to The Irish Times.

McDowell’s efforts means the gap between himself and Mickelson, fourth in the latest world rankings, is down to just 0.09 points. In this sort of form McDowell appears destined to move a step closer to that number one spot - still held by England’s Lee Westwood.

McDowell will take this week off and recharge the batteries instead of teeing it up in the Joburg Open in Johannesburg, the fourth and final event in a South African swing over the festive period and start of the new year.

Instead McDowell will tee it up in the Abu Dhabi Championship in a fortnight before taking a well-earned break then building up to the US Masters at Augusta in April.

After his round on Sunday, McDowell’s agent was asked if his man was drinking magic potions. According to Sports Illustrated senior writer Alan Shipnuck, the agent responded, "It comes in green cans with a red star and is brewed in Amsterdam." McDowell later posted this photo on Twitter.

Jonathan Byrd solves one of Kapalua's great mysteries

In the absence of compelling story lines at last week’s Tournament of Champions, some commentators wondered why an American hadn’t won the event since Jim Furyk in 2001. This year’s winner, American Jonathan Byrd had the answer.

Q. You said earlier in the week it was about time an American won this thing. It's been ten years; can you speak to that?

JONATHAN BYRD: Well, like I said, I don't know why an American hasn't won. Maybe it's just that Phil and Tiger aren't showing up. (Laughter) Maybe that's it.
