Truth & Rumors: Blogger identifies man who crashed U.S. Open trophy presentation

Posted at 3:21 PM by Mark Dee

The mystery of the U.S. Open trophy-presentation crasher, who charged onto the 18th green at Olympic Club in a Union Jack hat and made a bird noise before being roughly escorted off by the USGA's Mike Davis, has been solved.

According to Awful Announcing's Matt Yoder, the rooster-ish gent is a 40-year-old man from the U.K. who goes by "Jungle Bird." Writes Yoder:

Jungle Bird's Facebook page describes himself as a "fictional character" and "activist dedicated to raising awareness of deforestation :-)." Perhaps yesterday's episode will push him above 100 likes on Facebook.

Yes, we know this guy did it for attention. And yes, we know Truth & Rumors is providing that attention. But let's turn to the tape anyway:

Just to hit some highlights:

- The entrance: Out of focus, in your face.

- The distant, owlish look  and posture that accompany the call. This guy's no amateur. Sorry, Beau.

- Bob Costas's nasal flare.

- Webb Simpson's "I just won the U.S. Open" dismissal of the British bird.

- And then we have Davis, who sets up the courses for the U.S. Open. All indications are that he takes that task very seriously. To him, the presentation of the trophy is borderline sacrament. So seeing him defend his hallowed turf like Office Linebacker Terry Tate? Well, that's just fine with us.

A New Cigar Guy?
Not all the characters at Olympic were quite so...avian.

It’s been a lean, stogie-free couple of years since the 2010 Ryder Cup, when Cigar Guy became an Internet sensation. According to Deadspin, he may have a new disciple out there. Note the guy in the old-school outfit hanging out behind Jim Furyk on Sunday at the U.S. Open:

  Cigar man

Of course, given what we saw in the waning hours of the Open, this guy might be the most level-headed, normal dude in the city of San Francisco.

Cantlay to go pro?
Soon after Patrick Cantlay wrapped up his T42 at the U.S. Open Sunday, speculation sparked around the No. 1 ranked amateur. The Golf Channel's Rex Hoggard reported:

According to multiple sources familiar with the situation, amateur Patrick Cantlay plans to turn professional after this week's U.S. Open, although the 20-year-old said on Sunday at The Olympic Club that he has not made a decision…

…Cantlay, 20, who recently completed his sophomore season at UCLA and was runner-up at last year's U.S. Amateur, is playing next week's Travelers Championship and is scheduled to hold a news conference on Tuesday afternoon at TPC River Highlands.

Despite Cantlay's denial, sources say he plans to sign with Tiger Woods' manager Mark Steinberg with Excel Sports Management. GolfChannel.com asked Steinberg about his relationship with Cantlay Sunday at Olympic and he declined to comment.

The timing makes a lot of sense for Cantlay, who shot a 60 in Hartford last year. Clearly, the course agrees with him. As for signing with Steinberg, I'll offer this: You can't go wrong following Tiger Woods along the narrow fairway of turning golf into business. That said, who would wear a "PC" logo?

Obama hits 100 (rounds)
Barack Obama spent Father's day with loved ones: nine of his favorite Nike VR Full Cavity irons, a few choice Sasquatch fairway woods, and his pride and joy, a Taylor Made R11 driver. Obama logged the 100th round of his term on Sunday, according to Good Morning America:

President Barack Obama's love of golf hit a milestone today as he marked his 100th time on the links. His Father's Day achievement was reached at the Beverly Country Club in his hometown, the windy city…

…Obama was in Chicago this weekend to attend the wedding Saturday of longtime friend and adviser Valerie Jarrett's daughter. As of press time it is unknown if his family has further Father's Day plans, but first lady Michelle Obama is scheduled to deliver a commencement address at Oregon State University this afternoon.

Tonight the president embarks directly for Los Cabos, Mexico, from this city for a G20 summit.

I hope he brings his sticks. Summits are held at resorts for a reason, and that reason is to challenge Putin to a 5-ruble Nassau.

Obama has come under attack from Republican rivals for his golfing habit, but, according to the article, he's nowhere close to the White House's most prolific player. Woodrow Wilson reportedly logged 1,200 rounds across his two terms -- that's roughly a round every 2.5 days.

Rumor has it the secret service painted golf balls black so Wilson could practice on the White house lawn in the winter.

Yabba-Dabba-Don’t
Golf fans watching the final group Sunday may remember this clip of Graeme McDowell's tee shot into the par-three 15th hole (15 seconds in):

Yes, the fan said, “Yabba-Dabba-Do.” And, yes, it was awesome. Once.  Just like “Get in the Hole!” and “You Da Man!” and “Mashed Potatoes!”, this one will get old fast.

Posted at 4:41 PM by Golf.com

Tiger Woods's agent Mark Steinberg was arrested last night for "DWI and Aggravated DWI" for having a blood alcohol content above .18, according to tweets by Mike Buteau of Bloomberg News. Buteau also tweeted an image of a press release from the Ardsley, N.Y., police department, which listed Steinberg among those arrested at a checkpoint at the intersection of Saw Mill River Road and the New York State Thruway.

Truth & Rumors: Kuchar signs with Grey Goose

Posted at 12:24 PM by Michael Chwasky

Tour nice-guy Matt Kuchar is the newest brand ambassador for Grey Goose, the same vodka that caused Retief Goosen to miss a tee time at Riviera pro-am a few years back. Kuchar will serve as the official spokesperson for the Grey Goose golf program and will make an appearance on the premier episode of the new "Grey Goose 19th Hole," which will air on January 26th on the Golf Channel. Kuchar will also represent the brand in a number of ways including hosting meet-and-greet sessions at PGA Tour events and helping to develop Grey Goose Collection golf apparel.

"As a longtime fan of GREY GOOSE off the course, I am really excited about joining the family and representing the World's Best Tasting Vodka as an official spokesperson," said Kuchar. "I am proud to be aligned with GREY GOOSE as the leading super-premium vodka brand continues its longstanding tradition in golf."

According to Kuchar's agent, Mark Steinberg of Excel Sports Management, the match with Grey Goose is a natural one that speaks loudly for the Georgia Tech alum's marketability.

"They want Matt to be the face of the brand and he's very excited about it. When Matt first came out on Tour he was tagged as a future superstar and he wasn't able to exploit his full potential right away. He's a hard worker and has become one of the best players in the world and a lot of people respect him for it. You'd have a hard time finding anyone on Tour or anywhere else who has a bad word to say about Matt. As a result he's a very marketable athlete."

Trump giving up on Scottish golf resort?

After all the hubbub surrounding Trump's development of a potential billion dollar golf resort near Aberdeen, Scotland, it now looks like the Donald might be giving up on the project after all. According to Severin Carrel of The Guardian, the massive project, which was to include a five-star hotel, luxury villas, houses, timeshare apartments, and a second golf course, is being threatened by an offshore wind farm. In place of the development, the resort would simply feature the original golf course, which is set to open this summer, and a small, temporary clubhouse which would later be replaced with a luxury building. In a statement issued from his New York headquarters, Trump said:

"All further plans for future development, including the hotel, are now on hold until the Scottish government makes a decision on the application for the European offshore wind deployment centre submitted by Vattenfall and Areg [Aberdeen renewable energy group]. If the north-east of Scotland is serious about tourism and creating a global golf destination it cannot allow the coastline to be ruined by an ugly industrial park (11 64-storey test turbines) directly off the shoreline."

Some believe Trump might be using the wind farm as an excuse to free himself from a project that is now economically unfeasible. Back in June he admitted that he had to delay construction due to the economic recession and even said, "the world has crashed." David Milne, a property owner in the area who has resisted selling to Trump, recently said:

"I firmly believe he is just trying to sell. The planning permission he gained [for the clubhouse] was the final piece to increase the sale value of the golf course. That is the only reason they bothered going for it. The course is not selling as well as he thought. He has only sold 3,000 rounds of golf, and that's less than a month's worth of golfing after months of intensive marketing. He hasn't got the money, no investors are interested, and he is going to cut his losses and run."

Nobody in Trump's organization has commented, so it's anyone's guess if and when the development will be completed.

Truth & Rumors: Tiger and agent discuss new bag sponsor, Fuse Science

Posted at 1:37 PM by Michael Chwasky

If Tiger's domination of Aaron Baddeley in the Presidents Cup Sunday singles wasn't enough to convince you that he's back on track, maybe the fact that he's inked two endorsement deals in the last six weeks will do the trick. His agreement with Rolex, which Tiger's agent at Excel Sports Management, Mark Steinberg, suggested was the first of several endorsements to come, is significant in that it clearly illustrates that major global brands are more than ready to do business with the former No. 1 player in the world. Woods's newest deal with Fuse Science, a Florida-based nutrition company, further extends Tiger's reach to a new product category and will surely inspire more confidence in Tiger's endorse-ability.

"This company is laying the foundation for some very significant things," Woods said in a phone interview Monday with USA TODAY. "The more homework I did the more I was amazed with the technology that is not only applicable for me in what I do, it's applicable for everyone. And how easy it is to use -- that's where it really is ground-breaking. The technology is phenomenal. Some people don't like to take pills. Now you can just put a drop under your tongue. It's that easy. And it really does get into your system in 90 seconds. It's something you need so you don't get dehydrated on the golf course, especially when you're out in the sun all day long."

Tiger will sport the Fuse Science logo on his golf bag beginning at the Chevron World Challenge next month. Steinberg told Golf.com that there have been several opportunities to place corporate sponsorship on Tiger's bag recently but none "felt right." Tiger's confidence in the Fuse technology is such that Steinberg says he would have been interested in signing a deal with the company at any time in his career, even during his days with AT&T, Gillette and Gatorade.

"We did a lot of due diligence on the Fuse technology, and it could legitimately change the way people injest medicine and vitamins in the future," Steinberg said. "It could be revolutionary. They have an unbelievable group of executives and we're extremely impressed with the company."

As Tiger's game continues to round into form heading into his own tournament, don't be surprised if more good results on and off the course continue to come El Tigre's way. Tiger returning to the top of the world rankings wouldn't just be good for him it would be good for TV ratings, corporate sponsorships and the game of golf in general.

Norman hopes Presidents Cup performance puts Tiger back on top

The bit of tit for tat between Greg Norman and Tiger Woods over the Presidents Cup has been well-documented. Norman criticizes Fred Couples for picking Tiger instead of Keegan Bradley. Then Tiger closes out the Presidents Cup and says something to the effect of, "Greg probably wishes he kept his mouth shut." Regardless, Norman knows as well as anyone how important Tiger is to the game of golf and said so in a recent interview

"Tiger's Tiger -- he stepped up the plate," Norman said. "I said to him, 'You need golf as much as golf needs you.' We all want to see him up there. Any player hates to see a great player struggle.

"We all know what it's like to go through the ins and outs of the game," he explained. "You want to see the player who dominated the game come back so that when you beat him you feel like you beat him at the top of his game."

Fred Couples, who was initially stung a bit by Norman's criticism, has clearly gotten over it in Freddy-like fashion.

"I don't know if I've ever felt vindicated in golf in 30 years, but I feel like I know what I'm doing," he said. "There's a reason I picked Tiger early. He worked hard and when a guy says 'Don't worry about me' you are going to smile. I got frustrated a bit because I felt I was picking the greatest player I've ever seen play."

Tiger Woods signs first U.S. endorsement deal since sex scandals

Posted at 1:49 PM by Mike Walker

Tigerrolex_web Tiger Woods is looking to reverse his recent decline on the golf course at the Frys.com Open in Northern California this week, but he’s already scored in his efforts to regain the endorsements he lost after his sex scandals.

Woods announced a new “partnership” with luxury watchmaker Rolex on his website Wednesday. The terms of the deal were not disclosed, but Rolex has a long history of sponsoring golf events and players, and counts Phil Mickelson, Rickie Fowler and Luke Donald among its celebrity endorsers.

The deal ends an endorsement drought for Woods, who lost many sponsors after his Thanksgiving night car accident in 2009 and subsequent sex scandals. AT&T, Accenture, Gillette, General Motors and Gatorade all ended their relationships with Woods in 2010. Watchmaker Tag Heuer did not drop Woods as a spokesman immediately after the scandals but did not renew its deal with Woods when it expired in 2011.

Prior to the Rolex announcement, Woods’s only new endorsement since 2010 was for a Japanese muscle ointment. He’s been struggling on the course as well, falling out of the top 50 in an injury-plagued season. In a written statement, Rolex officials expressed confidence in Woods’s playing future.

“Rolex is convinced that Tiger Woods still has a long career ahead of him and that he has all the qualities required to continue to mark the history of golf,” Rolex officials said in a written statement. “The brand is committed to accompanying him in his new challenges.”

Woods is also close to signing a deal for a logo on his golf bag, according to his agent Mark Steinberg. Woods carried the AT&T logo on his bag before his scandals. In an interview with journalist Thomas Bonk prior to the Rolex announcement, Steinberg said Woods still has many endorsement opportunities despite his bruised public image and his mediocre recent play.

“Within a week or so, we’re announcing a major deal that’s being finalized now,” Steinberg said. “And we’re going to have a golf bag deal in place. The business end is actually quite strong. You can call me an agent, but I’m a salesman. And there are opportunities.”

Woods will tee off at the Frys.com Open on Thursday at 3:10 p.m. Eastern time. It will be his first competitive round since the PGA Championship in August, where he missed the cut.

Report: Tiger Woods and agent join Excel Sports Management

Posted at 11:36 AM by Golf.com

Tiger Woods and his agent, Mark Steinberg, are heading to Excel Sports Management, according to a Golf Channel report. The agent parted with IMG in May, and Steinberg is set to appear live on Golf Channel Monday afternoon with more details. Here's the release from GolfChannel.com:

Mark Steinberg has joined Excel Sports Management and is bringing Tiger Woods with him as a client. He will discuss the move on Golf Channel immediately after coverage of the U.S. Women's Open ends.

Steinberg, who has represented Tiger Woods since 1999, left International Management Group in May. Woods, who had been with IMG since turning professional in 1996, announced two weeks later, in June, that he would leave the company and remain with Steinberg.

“After meeting with a number of agencies and businesses, I decided Excel was the perfect fit.” Steinberg said via press release.

Woods is not competing in this week’s Open Championship as he continues to recover from knee and Achilles’ injuries.

Excel also represents New York Yankees’ shortstop Derek Jeter as well as NBA phenom Blake Griffin.

Why Tiger chose to stay with longtime agent Mark Steinberg

Posted at 3:02 PM by David Dusek

For years, Tiger Woods announced news and plans on his Web site, tigerwoods.com, but on Monday morning he sent this tweet to his nearly 1 million followers:

"Staying with Mark Steinberg. Total confidence in him. Excited about the next stage in my professional life. Fond memories of Mark McCormack."

With those 140 characters, Woods ended his relationship with IMG, the Cleveland-based sports-agency powerhouse that had represented his business interests since he became a professional golfer in 1996.

Steinberg and IMG parted ways at the end of May after IMG did not renew Steinberg’s contract. That left Woods with a decision to make: Stay with his agency or stick with the man who stood by him after his 2009 car accident and subsequent sex scandal.

In this case it certainly appears that loyalty won out, but here are three other possible reasons why Tiger is staying with Steinberg.

1. No break-in period. To say that Tiger's world is a little complicated is an understatement. If Woods had stayed with IMG, he would have had a new person or team of people in charge of his business interests. Steinberg has been by Woods's side for 12 years.

2. Tiger and Steinberg become a package deal. If Steinberg doesn't feel the urge to strike out and start his own agency, having a powerhouse client like Woods committed to staying with him could make Steinberg an attractive agent for another management group to recruit. If Woods can start winning, a firm that hires Steinberg can make money and increase its exposure. Arriving as a package deal might also allow Tiger to keep a greater percentage of endorsement dollars.

3. The client becomes a partner. Did you notice the "Excited about the next stage in my professional life" statement in Woods's tweet? Woods has won just about everything there is to win in golf including all four majors (multiple times), the FedEx Cup (2007 and 2009), and a Ryder Cup (1999). His golf course design business is off to a rocky start, but as the economy improves the jobs will come. He's still the face of Nike Golf and one of the most successful video-game franchises ever created (EA Sports' Tiger Woods PGA Tour). With Steinberg handling the agents and the deals, Woods could woo athletes and celebrities to their firm. Could the next stage of his professional life be the sports-agency business?

According to The Sports Business Journal, Woods only earned $1.1 million for IMG in 2010 because sponsors like AT&T, Tag Heuer and GM dropped him from their rosters and he failed to win a tournament. (In his most recent contract, which was signed before his scandals, Woods negotiated to give IMG a lower percentage of his endorsements and winnings.)

To a company the size of IMG, $1.1 million walking out the door isn't cause for too much concern. The company still has plenty of superstar athletes in its stable, runs tournaments around the world, creates TV shows, and has an army of agents brokering deals.

At the end of the day, neither Woods nor IMG is going to cry over this separation. For 13 years IMG made a lot of money off Woods and he made a fortune with the help of IMG.

That simple truth doesn’t require a tweet.

Rumors: Tiger earned just $1.1 million for IMG in 2010

Posted at 3:29 PM by Jeff Ritter

Tiger not worth IMG's trouble?
Tiger Woods's agent, Mark Steinberg, split with IMG last week, and details of the fallout are slowly trickling out. The latest news describes the revenue IMG lost after several of Woods's big-money sponsors bailed in the aftermath of Tiger's sex scandals. Steve Elling of CBS Sports cites a Sports Business Journal report, and concludes that that Tiger-Steiny duo were simply too pricey for the agency to keep around.

In a scenario that some had posed last week, potentially casting aside Tiger Woods as a client won't exactly take a heavy toll at IMG, the sports-management giant that has represented the fading former No. 1 since he turned pro in 1996.

Woods and his agent apparently were too expensive to keep.

According to a report in Sports Business Journal, the income generated by Woods for IMG had fallen to $1.1 million in 2010, after the sex scandal had hit, and that wasn't nearly enough to offset the contract and annnual bonuses of his longtime agent, Mark Steinberg.

Steinberg's contract was up for renewal and last week, but IMG severed ties rather than renew.

IMG agreed to a reduced percentage with Woods on his endorsement earnings, and as his deals disappeared in the wake of his scandal and lackluster play, the income dollars dwindled. The source cited in the SBJ report stated that IMG cleared $7.8 million on Woods' endorsement earnings in 2007 but that the number cratered after the scandals hit and he lost rich deals with Gatorade, AT&T, Accenture and others.

The source told SBJ that Steinberg "would have made about $3 million this year in salary and bonuses, significantly more than the fees Woods would have generated."

Woods still hasn't commented on whether he will remain with Steinberg, or leave his agent to stay at IMG.

Bruins great Ray Bourque congratulates Boston fan Keegan Bradley on first victory

Last Sunday Keegan Bradley beat Ryan Palmer on the first hole of sudden death to win the Byron Nelson and his first career PGA Tour title. The well-wishes have been pouring in for Bradley, and Stephanie Wei at Wei Under Par has an inside look at the aftermath of Bradley's victory, including a voicemail from a prominent New England sports hero.

Keegan grew up in Woodstock, Vermont, and Hopkington, Massachusetts, so he's naturally a Boston-sports fanatic. He played Borque's voicemail, which was nearly two-minutes long, for me, and it's pretty cool. Here's Bourque going into fan-boy mode!

"This is Ray Bourque. I used to play on the Boston Bruins. I'm a big fan of yours. I'm not sure if you know who I am, but I'm a golfer…I was watching today and congratulations on a great win and you're off to a great start.

I've been in the sporting business and I know how you must feel and you should be so proud and just keep doing what you're doing…You gotta be dedicated and working hard and doing all those things that you need to do to be the best. Just enjoy this moment and keep going forward, buddy…

I can't wait to meet you…Have a great night and I'm babbling now. I'm also a Bruin, so let's go Bruins. Maybe we'll have a few things to celebrate. Not only your win today, but the Bruins winning the Stanley Cup."

Truth & Rumors: Agent creates new headache for Tiger

Posted at 11:12 AM by Jeff Ritter

Things aren't any getting easier for Tiger Woods. Hours after stating his satisfaction with both his agent, Mark Steinberg, and his agent's company, IMG, the news broke that "Steiny" and IMG had in fact split. Steve Elling of CBSSports.com says that Steinberg's departure is yet another headache for Woods to deal with.

It presents Woods with more nagging, niggling details to sort out as he tries to re-assemble a reputation and career that have corroded from the bottom up starting with his 2009 sex scandal. Now he is facing yet another big-money divorce -- either from his agent and friend, Steinberg, or the management firm that helped put him on the marketing map and secured endorsement deals that made him the first billionaire earner in sports history.

"I'm very happy with both," Woods said Tuesday.

Pick one.

It adds another layer to the upchucking upheaval in Woods' personal and private lives, and in this instance, there's crossover. Steinberg stuck by Woods at his lowest ebb as the stomach-turning scandal played out -- sure, he had a financial stake in it -- and is one of Woods' few personal confidants. A divorce from IMG or Steinberg is going to potentially cut across all boundaries.

Elling also believes the split could deal another blow to Woods's already plummeting endorsement income.

The latest falling domino adds another level of stress in an area where Woods is particularly vulnerable -- his wallet. The nuances of the agent game are interesting, because while agencies often solicit and land endorsement deals for clients, companies often take the initiative, too. They make the first call, and big firms like IMG then match up the particulars of the prospective corporate endorsement deal with the best sports figure in its client closet.

Woods won't be benefiting from any of those handout deals anymore. In fact, IMG negotiated his appearance fees, often at tournaments run overseas by one of IMG's subsidiaries (incest layer duly noted). Woods' last victory, 18 months ago at the Aussie Masters, came while he was receiving $3 million from a tournament run by IMG. His appearance-fee deal with Dubai has also reportedly expired, another revenue source that has dried up like spit in a desert.

Maybe Tiger's tumultuous life on and off the course could actually inspire a few potential sponsorship ideas. Ringling Brothers, anyone?

Luke says he should be No. 1

Lee Westwood has held the No. 1 ranking since April 25, the day after he won the Indonesian Masters. But several players are on his tail, and no one is closing faster than Luke Donald. In fact, the normally reserved Donald believes he deserves the top spot right now. Pro Golf Talk's Ryan Ballengee has the details.

He may trail Lee Westwood by the slightest of margins for No. 1 in the Official World Golf Ranking, but Luke Donald has a case to claim he is the best player in the world right now. Westwood said earlier in 2011 that he prized the world’s top spot because the system rewards consistency over winning a major as a freak accident. Fair enough, but Donald feels he has been more consistent than Westwood in 2011.

"I think I’m the most consistent right now. I feel I’ve proven that over the last few months," he said. "I don’t know whether you choose someone who’s won Majors or go with someone who has chances every week, but naturally my view is consistency pays.

"Does the way I’ve been playing make me best at the moment? Yes, I think so.

"And there’s a good possibility I could take over anyway this weekend. A win here would definitely get the job done."

Americans skip European 'Fifth Major'

The BMW PGA Championship is the biggest event on the European circuit. (Lee Westwood, who passed on the Players Championship, called the even at Wentworth "the fifth major.") This week there are two Americans in the field: John Daly, who received a sponsor's exemption, and Anthony Kang, who's exempt thanks to his win at the 2009 Malaysian Open. Should more U.S. pros hop across the pond for this event? ESPN's Bob Harig can see why Americans would take a pass.

If you take the American view, why would you go all the way to London for one tournament that is not part of your tour? Sure, the prize money is significant, but PGA Tour players compete for huge sums every week. The Scotsman referred to it as apathy, but it's more a matter of too much of a good thing.

Lucas Glover received 58 world ranking points for claiming the Wells Fargo Championship three weeks ago, while the winner at Wentworth will get 64. For Americans, it's not that big of a difference. They've got plenty of tournaments to earn world ranking points nearer to their backyard.

Wells Fargo, the Players Championship and Colonial are the three tournaments just contested on the PGA Tour. This week's HP Byron Nelson Championship has attracted just one top-10 player, Matt Kuchar, and only 10 of the top 50, but next week is Jack Nicklaus' Memorial Tournament followed in two weeks by the U.S. Open.

PGA Tour players, especially Americans, are accused of being insular, and yet it's hard to blame them when they have so many excellent tournaments to play here.

The Next Great American Golf Prodigy?

This video sure looks real, and if it is, all hope is not lost for American golf. Just give this kid about 17 more years.

Report: Agent says Tiger done talking about scandals

Posted at 2:55 PM by Mike Walker

Enough is enough, as far as Tiger Woods is concerned.

Woods has answered all the questions he’s going to about his personal scandals, his agent Mark Steinberg told The Australian Herald Sun newspaper in advance of Woods’ playing in Australia next month.

"It has been such a tumultuous year and I think he's really paid the price," Steinberg said from his Cleveland office.

"But it's time to move forward. He has answered all the questions that he's going to answer and I hope that he's heading for a productive week in Melbourne.

Woods dislikes talking about his personal life, but following his Thanksgiving car accident and ensuing sex scandals, even the reticent Woods couldn’t avoid addressing some of these issues. Through his “personal statement” in Florida in February, his interviews with The Golf Channel and ESPN and his media conferences at tournaments, Woods acknowledged making “incredibly bad decisions, decisions that hurt so many people close to me."

Woods has also talked about his divorce from Elin Nordegren, which was finalized on Aug. 23, saying, “I wish her the best in everything. You know, it's a sad time in our lives.”

Still, Woods has avoided answering many questions related to his scandals. For example, he’s acknowledged to going to rehab, but he’s never said what for. He’s also been tight-lipped about the circumstances of his Thanksgiving night car accident, saying only that “the police investigated the accident and they cited me 166 bucks and it's a closed case.”

Woods will be in Melbourne for the Australian Masters on Nov. 11-14. He is also playing in the HBSC Champions tournament in Shanghai on Nov. 4-7. While in Asia, he will play a one-day skins game in Thailand on Nov. 8. His final event of the season will be at the Chevron World Challenge, which Woods hosts in Thousand Oaks, Calif, on Dec. 2-5.
