Tiger Woods attends Michael Jordan's wedding

Posted at 3:39 PM by Coleman McDowell

Woods_300Tiger Woods made the 30-minute trip from his home in Jupiter, Fla., to pal Michael Jordan's wedding Saturday -- without girlfriend Lindsey Vonn –- and looked sharp in a grey suit and dark sunglasses, according to a photo posted on TMZ.com.

Jordan married Yvette Prieto, a 35-year-old former model, after five years of dating. A reception at Jack Nicklaus's Bear's Club in Jupiter followed. And what a venue it was. The 40,000 square-foot reception site barely surpassed the size Jordan's nearby home, which totals 35,000 square feet. Jordan is the owner of the NBA's Charlotte Bobcats and an avid golfer. Woods and Jordan, two of the most accomplished athletes of all time, have been friends for several years. "He's been like my big brother, so it's been great to have him part of my life," Woods once said of Jordan. The two are also sometime golf partners who enjoy trash-talking with each other; they did so publically at the 2007 Quail Hollow pro-am [photo].

People Magazine reported that Woods's girlfriend Vonn was invited to wedding, but was not able to attend. Woods was free due to his customary three-week break from tournament play after the Masters. He will also be absent this week at the Wells Fargo Championship and will return to action at the Players Championship May 9-12.

Jordan asks McIlroy to be partner at Medalist member-guest

Posted at 6:11 PM by Coleman McDowell

Mj_300And you thought the WGC-Cadillac Championship at Doral had star power.

According to Golf World's Tim Rosaforte, Michael Jordan has asked Rory McIlroy to be his partner at the member-guest event Friday at Medalist Golf Club in Hobe Sound, Fla., where they'll be playing against Medalist member Tiger Woods and Ahmad Rashad.

It turns out that Jordan has become a valued mentor to PGA Tour pros who live in the Palm Beach, Fla. area, including Ernie Els, Keegan Bradley and Luke Donald. Jordan doesn't give advice about the proper arm slot on their takeaway or the right launch angle for their driver, but he helps his Tour player pals with the mental aspect of the sport.

"I'm not a golf coach, never will be, won't try to be," Jordan said.

Rosaforte shares several Jordan-esque stories like MJ jabbing Bradley over the amount of shots Bradley gives him during a round compared to Donald. Why does he get six from Donald and only five from Bradley? Because Donald's in the top 10, and Bradley isn't. Other anecdotes include Els working on a putting drill when Jordan bets him $100 he misses, and Donald talking about how Jordan has helped him become a tougher player.

"As friends we talk about things," Jordan said about the tour pros in his inner circle. "But I'm not looking for credit. I'm looking to help you out, wanting to make you the best you can be from a sports standpoint."

Luke Donald picks Michael Jordan's brain -- and pocket

Posted at 4:25 PM by Samantha Glover

MjAs he strives to regain the title of World No. 1, Luke Donald has enlisted the help of Michael Jordan, according to a report by the Telegraph's James Corrigan.

“He’s good for the mind,” Donald said. “He’s been making sure that I’m ready mentally. It’s been good to pick Michael’s brains and find out what he was thinking about when he was playing basketball. He’s always trying to play mind games. He doesn’t like to lose.”

Since meeting at The Bears Club, Jack Nicklaus's Jupiter, Fla., course, the two have become friends, spending time on the course together.

“Michael’s a really nice chap who I’ve got to know really well recently,” Donald told Telegraph Sport. “His fiancée [Yvette Prieto] is good friends with my wife [Diane] and we’ve begun to play a lot together. I’m always happy to empty his wallet.”

After recording four victories in 2011 and spending much of the year ranked No. 1, Donald has dropped to No. 3 in the Official Golf Rankings behind Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy.

Truth & Rumors: Michael Jordan's Jupiter, Fla. estate almost complete

Posted at 4:56 PM by Samantha Glover

Michael Jordan will soon be Tiger Woods's neighbor, as his $12.4 million Jupiter, Fla., mansion is near complete.

Jordan will join Woods and a number of other professional golfers like Rory McIlroy, Keegan Bradley, Rickie Fowler, Dustin Johnson, Camilo Villegas and Steve Marino who call the Florida beach town home.

In addition to 11 bedrooms, the house will be equipped with an entire wing dedicated to athletics and a "cigar friendly" media room.

According to Jessica Rodriguez's report, Jordan is already a member at one of the area's exclusive resorts:

There is one of the most premium golf courses in the world nearby, which carries a $35,000 sign up fee, in addition to a $25,000 annual fee. It is believed that the basketball legend has already begun using the golf facilities.

Truth & Rumors: Michael Jordan banned from country club for cargo shorts

NBA legend and pro-am regular Michael Jordan caused a stir at an upscale Miami golf club when he refused to adhere to the club's dress code.

According to a report by the New York Post's Page Six, Jordan was made aware on the 12th hole that his cargo shorts violated club rules after members at La Gorce Country Club complained about Jordan's attire. Jordan declined an offer to go back the clubhouse and change, and a club source says Jordan won't be invited back.

Page Six confirmed the report with a rep for Jordan:

“Michael Jordan did wear cargo pants . . . He had been there many times before and had worn cargo pants previously, and had never been made aware that he was violating any dress code. This time, he was made aware of the violation on the 12th hole, and at that point . . . he did refuse to interrupt his game, and return to the clubhouse and change. We were not aware that he is not allowed to return to La Gorce. I guess it’s their loss — as MJ is a great golfer, and a great guest."

Truth & Rumors: Keegan Bradley beat trash-talking Michael Jordan in match

Posted at 11:44 AM by Mark Dee

You knew Michael Jordan wasn't content just watching the Ryder Cup.

Maybe that's why he challenged one of the team's stars -- Keegan Bradley -- to a match. According to Bradley, though, the audition didn't go well.

Bradley, who miraculously transforms into a crazed mongoose once he enters match play, described the experience on The Golf Channel's Morning Drive. Will Gray has the recap:

"He was yapping pretty much the whole day," he claimed of Jordan, who displayed a penchant for trash-talking throughout his NBA playing career.

After birdies by Bradley on each of the final two holes, the match hinged on Jordan's final stroke.

"He had about 6 feet," Bradley explained. "It wouldn't have gone in if it was the size of a basketball hoop."

So you say Jordan missed badly at the last, with the match on the line? Well, maybe he does have the right stuff to make the U.S. side ...

Truth & Rumors: PGA expects massive crowds, lines to continue at Ryder Cup

Posted at 10:56 AM by Mark Dee

If the 12 hours of blanket TV coverage depicting throngs of fans 10-deep didn't tip it, there's something you should know: People like the Ryder Cup. A lot.

In fact, the PGA of America, which throws the party, has said it expects 240,000 people over the course of the Cup's six days and warned vendors to expect as many as 60,000 people on the course each day, according to Michael Smith of SportsBusiness Journal.

Those big crowds mean big business: Smith reports that the PGA has sold an estimated $50 million in "chalets, clubhouse rooms, individual hospitality clubs, viewing suites and corporate tables" alone.

All that, apparently, means a ravenous appetite for souvenirs.

That will translate into huge merchandise numbers for Cutter & Buck, which manages the 45,000-square-foot Ryder Cup shop next to the 18th hole. Traffic through the merchandise tent was overwhelming as early as Wednesday, when the fire marshal halted the flow of people into the tent for about 15 minutes. Even with 50 checkout registers going, the line to pay went almost the length of the tent. More than 100 fans stood outside waiting to get in and only when buyers exited were more people allowed to enter.

Hmm. Maybe those lines kept M.J. away from the merch tent. That would explain why he showed up in the same clothes he was wearing in 1992. (Check out the first picture of Mike in this wonderful, revealing Tumblr, WTFIsMikeWearing.)

Truth & Rumors: Bill Murray, Michael Phelps to play in Ryder Cup pro-am

Posted at 11:02 AM by Mark Dee

The Ryder Cup, that classic test of Continental mettle, is finally getting the same treatment as…every other event that featuring professional golfers.

That's right: The Ryder Cup is getting a Pro-Am. Specifically, "The Ryder Cup Captains & Celebrity Scramble Golf Event." Here's what the PGA of America has to say for itself:

Bill Murray, Justin Timberlake, Michael Phelps and George Lopez are currently scheduled to appear with Chicago sports legends Ernie Banks, Richard Dent, Stan Mikita and Scottie Pippen as participants in the first-ever 2012 Ryder Cup Captains & Celebrity Scramble golf event on Sept. 25 at Medinah (Ill.) Country Club, host venue of the 39th Ryder Cup.

The celebrities and sports stars will be paired with past Ryder Cup Captains to play 10 holes of Medinah's Course No. 3 as part of a team in a scramble format. Participating past Ryder Cup Captains include Ben Crenshaw, Tom Kite, Tom Lehman, Corey Pavin, Dave Stockton, Hal Sutton, Lee Trevino and Lanny Wadkins.

And so, a beautiful tradition begins. The great European Stan Mikita vs. the battle-tested Scottie Pippen, all while Bill Murray looks on. The biggest challenge of Ryder Cup Tuesday? When to use Ernie Banks's drive.

Whatever. We're sure Sept. 25th will be a beautiful day for a scramble. Let's hit two! (Maybe three! Or four!...)

Love says Michael Jordan and a ‘couple other guys’ will be hanging around U.S. team

Posted at 1:00 PM by Mark Dee

Anyone who's seen Space Jam knows that Michael Jordan has game -- or at least cartoon allies -- on the links.

Maybe that's why Davis Love III has invited the Bulls legend to serve as a motivator/assistant captain when the Ryder Cup returns to the Chicago area later this month. "I've talked to Michael," Love said during his Tuesday Ryder Cup press conference.  "Michael's going to be hanging around with Fred [Couples] probably a lot and be an influence."

Jordan served a similar role in the Presidents Cup for captain Couples, and now Love -- who was also on Couples's staff -- wants to recapture a little of His Airness's 90s magic:

One of the neatest things I ever saw in the Ryder Cup was Michael riding in the golf cart with Tom Kite. He came out to watch Freddie and I play and I thought that was one of the coolest things.

So I want my team, like Fred and I did, to get to see Michael. Rather than him sneaking around in the gallery, I want him to be seen and I want him to be in our team room, be hanging around and be a great influence.

Love mentioned that he'd like to have "a couple other guys" hanging around the team as well. It seems quite a few will also have the last name Love:

My brother, Mark, he and I are busy with another tournament at Sea Island two or three weeks after The Ryder Cup, so he's been helpful with everything I've done in golf and he's going to be there.  I told him, I just want you to sit in the cart and ride around with me and tell me what I'm supposed to be doing. He'll be a trusted advisor and he was probably a little too busy for the assistant captain's role.  He's going to be a big part of it, and obviously my whole family is going to be there.

Now doubt we'll hear more over the next few weeks about who will be riding in carts with Davis at Medinah. Expect a few more guest stars trying jockey for the best views.

Truth & Rumors: Tony Romo, John Daly team up at AT&T Pebble Beach

Posted at 4:45 PM by Mike Walker

After missing the cut last year, John Daly and Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo are partnering again at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am next month, according to The Dallas Morning News.

"After Qatar I'll head back and team up my Cowboys partner Tony Romo at Pebble Beach once again this year," Daly said via Twitter. …

Daly, who played at Arkansas, is a big Cowboys fan. Romo plays to a scratch handicap. Last year he shot 69 in the local U.S. Open qualifier at the Honors Golf Club. He also appeared on Daly's reality TV show. And before the Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial, Romo and Daly hosted a VIP party in Dallas to raise money for the John Daly Foundation and launch the second Texas Celebrity Shootout.

The Romo-Daly team will be a nice draw for fans at Pebble next month, but it's going to be hard to top the show Daly put on with pal Kid Rock at the late, great Buick Open in 2008. Somehow, I don't think we'll see any balls teed on Bud tall boys this time.

Why Jack won't tweet
The ranks of professional golfers on Twitter increases almost daily with even sharing-averse Tiger Woods joining the fun. However, we're not likely to see Jack Nicklaus trading online barbs with Lee Westwood anytime soon. According to The Palm Beach Post, Nicklaus appeared with Florida Gov. Rick Scott to talk about the economic impact of golf on Florida'a economy when the subject turned to social media.

Tonight, Scott is hosting a Twitter town hall where he'll take questions and give answers, all within the 140-character social media site's limit.

"I'm going to Twitter a town hall meeting," Scott explained to Nicklaus. "So you can get online and ask questions with Twitter and I'll respond."

Nicklaus appeared blase about Scott's social media event.

"Do you Tweet, sir?" he was asked.

"No. I make sure I remain totally illiterate in that state," Nicklaus said.

Shadow Creek open to public for Michael Jordan charity event
Sure, you can watch Wayne Gretzky and Mark Wahlberg try to break 80, but the real draw of the Michael Jordan Invitational charity golf tournament at the end of March is the chance to see legendary Las Vegas golf course Shadow Creek. John Katsilometes of The Las Vegas Sun has the details.

If ever a woodsy, grassy, lake-laden expanse could be considered mythic, it would be Shadow Creek Golf Course.

In its first decade of existence, the stories of Shadow Creek's exclusivity permeated the clubhouses of Las Vegas golf lore: Only the "whales" who patronized Steve Wynn's hotels would be permitted to play it, and so rare was human activity that groups teed off an hour apart. …

Today, standards are somewhat more relaxed than in the days when Wynn ran the operation, as MGM Resorts guests are permitted to play Shadow Creek. Green fees are listed at $500, with includes limo service to and from the course. Otherwise, commoners have not been allowed on the course.

But Shadow Creek, conceived by Wynn, created by Fazio and owned today by MGM Resorts, is opening to the public for the first time. We get to see what all the hullabaloo has been about during an event equal to the task: The 10th Annual Michael Jordan Celebrity Invitational, set for March 31-April 4. It's the first time the tournament will be held in Las Vegas.

Azinger @PaulAzinger: Davis and Ollie will be terrific captains. Won't be the usual finger pointing at captains during this RC. Press will have to blame players
