Fred Couples, Nick Price selected as captains for 2013 Presidents Cup

Posted at 3:47 PM by Golf.com

PGA Tour Commissioner Tim Finchem announced Tuesday that Fred Couples and Nick Price will serve as captains at the 2013 Presidents Cup.

Couples played in four Presidents Cups and captained the U.S. team in 2009 and 2011.

"Without being on the team, there's nothing better than to be a captain," Couples said.

Price will serve as captain of the international team for the first time. He played in the event five times and takes over the captain's job from Greg Norman.

The 2013 Presidents Cup will be held at Muirfield Village in Columbus, Ohio.

Truth & Rumors: Allenby challenges Ogilvy to fight

Posted at 1:49 PM by Mick Rouse

Frustrations from the Presidents Cup boiled over as a spat between Robert Allenby and Geoff Ogilvy came close to blows in front of 150 guests at the Hyatt Regency Coolum while celebrating Greg Chalmers Australian PGA victory, reports Steve Orme. Allenby, who went 0-4 without earning the International team a single point at Royal Melbourne, laid the groundwork for the feud when he placed the blame on his teammate for his poor performance.

The 40-year-old hit back at criticism of his own play on Thursday and appeared to deflect the blame onto his playing partners—Retief Goosen, YE Yang and Ogilvy.

He claimed Goosen missed several birdie putts in Thursday's foursomes, insinuated that Yang didn't pull his weight in Friday's fourball and claimed Ogilvy 'hit me in the tree three times off the tee and I had to chip out three times', in Saturday's foursomes.

Ogilvy, who was playing alongside Allenby at the Australian PGA, responded to his fellow Victorian's comments via Twitter:

Picture 4
While Ogilvy maintained that the tweet was genuine when questioned by the media, Allenby took offense to what he believed to be a sarcastic retort and confronted Ogilvy.

When Allenby sauntered over to Ogilvy's table and sat down at around 9:15 PM on Sunday night, the 2006 US Open champion immediately made his dissatisfaction known.

He was overheard accusing Allenby of throwing him under the bus and openly questioned his character, which sent the four-time PGA winner into a rage.

Allenby inadvertently broke a wine glass and screamed 'do you want to go?', prompting Ogilvy, who was surrounded by seven friends, to get out of his chair in front of a captivated and stunned audience.

However, Allenby's temper struck again when Ogilvy sought out an apology later in the evening.

The ugly stoush escalated once again as Allenby invited his adversary to meet him outside of the main square, to which Ogilvy quipped 'I'd like that'.

The squabbling finally came to an end as Allenby stormed out while Ogilvy watched on calmly. If only Allenby had shown this much fight during the Presidents Cup...

Kaymer won't join McIlroy, Westwood on PGA Tour

After declining membership a year ago, both Rory McIlroy and Lee Westwood will take their talents to South Beach the PGA Tour. Martin Kaymer, however, has no intentions of joining his peers, according to Waggleroom's Emily Kay.

"I have no intention of joining Lee and Rory because it means playing just too many tournaments," said Kaymer, who noted that playing 12 European and 15 U.S. events would require "just far too much traveling."

Kaymer sounded bemused by McIlroy and Westwood’s seesaw relationship with the PGA Tour.

"I just don't know why Rory and Lee go back and forth and that to me seems a little strange. One year they are on the PGA Tour and next they're not."

Omega president calls PGA Tour and European Tour "greedy"

Stephen Urquhart, president of Swiss watchmaker Omega, said the PGA Tour and European Tour are "greedy" for continually adding more and more tournaments to their schedules, according to Reuters' Bernie McGuire

"The big problem with golf at present is a calendar issue and we've told all the Tours that they have to stop being so greedy," Urquhart told reporters. "There are too many tournaments and they are adding tournaments all the time.”

Urquhart followed up his remarks by asserting that the two tours have shown little respect to Asia.

"And to treat Asia as the stopgap as they do with this week's World Cup is not right. It's wrong and the Tours are not going to win if they keep treating Asia as a stopgap. They need to show Asia more respect.”

"Why can't there be a big event like the World Cup here in Asia in June? What's the difference in taking a flight from London to Beijing or London to Los Angeles?”

Urquhart also confirmed that Omega has ended their sponsorship of golf’s World Cup and will return to sponsoring the Hong Kong Open, questioning the Federations of Golf Tours decision to award Mission Hills hosting rights to the World Cup for the next 10 years.

"The Federation and Mission Hills know my feeling on this because before this year I was not happy with the fields we were getting, but we've got three Major winners here this year and there's been a lot more respect shown to the event," he said. "While there are not too many countries in the world who could organize an event like China, the tournament needs to travel around the world."

"Done properly and packaged properly, and staged at a better time of year, no one ... would go anywhere else in the world that given week but to play in the World Cup.”

World Cup to mirror Olympic format in 2013

Golf’s return to the Olympics in 2016 has inspired the World Cup to change its format next year from a two-man team competition to 72 holes of stroke play. Ken Chu, the chairman and CEO of Mission Hills, confirmed that these changes will be implemented in 2013, also noting that the World Cup will command world ranking points. Again, Reuters' Bernie McGuire has the story

"The World Cup will change format, and it will begin enjoying world rankings points, and it will still be held biennially and at around this time of year,” said Chu.

The tournament will bring back an individual four-round trophy for the first time since 1999, when Tiger Woods won the individual award in Malaysia.

"But with golf to be in the 2016 Olympics the equation in golf changes, and these changes to the World Cup will be having the Olympics in mind.”

Truth & Rumors: Arnold Palmer tied to Sandusky's charity

Posted at 12:20 PM by Alan Bastable

Arnold Palmer is among several sports luminaries who served as honorary board members of The Second Mile, the Pennsylvania-based charity founded by alleged pedophile and former Penn State coach Jerry Sandusky. But Palmer’s spokesman says that the golfer had little if any involvement with the foundation.

“Mr. Palmer was involved with the Second Mile in name only as an honorary member and never attended or participated in any meetings or activities,” the spokesman, Doc Giffin, wrote in an e-mail to Golf.com.

It’s unclear how many years Palmer held the position, what exactly his role was, or if he knew Sandusky personally.

“I prefer not to respond to those questions,” Giffin said.

Other sports figures on the board included Hall of Fame shortstop Cal Ripken Jr., former Notre Dame football coach Lou Holtz and Pittsburgh Steelers great Franco Harris. According to ESPN, both Ripken and Holtz contacted the Second Mile after Sandusky’s indictment and requested that their names be removed from the list of honorary board members posted on the foundation’s website. That list has since been removed entirely, and the honorary board itself has been dissolved.

Giffin declined to say whether Palmer has had any correspondence with the foundation in the wake of the scandal.

Lucky fan at the Presidents Cup (well, sort of)
When Aaron Baddeley stepped to the tee on the 17th hole Friday at Royal Melbourne, spectator Barry McCarthy had a prime vantage point along the fairway. A little too prime, according to The Age:

The 68-year-old from Mount Eliza was perched on a fold-out chair and was exchanging pleasantries with one of the Royal Melbourne marshals, when he cracked a joke that not long after did not seem so funny.

''I had just said that I was in the right position to get hit by a ball. I kid you not, about 30 seconds beforehand I said that, and then 'bang', I did,'' McCarthy said.

Baddeley's tee shot veered right, smashing McCarthy's sunglasses and splitting the ridge of his nose. ''I've been headhunted in business, but this is ridiculous,'' he joked.

On the upside, McCarthy wound up with a Badds-autographed ball.

Bloody

Mickelson’s mysterious buggy ride

Was it Presidents Cup nerves? Or did Phil Mickelson eat some bad Vegemite? It's unclear, but the Sydney Morning Herald reports that Lefty had an unexpected “emergency” before his fourball match on Friday:

Before the action started and the mercury began to rise, the media compound on Royal Melbourne's tennis courts was thrust into a frenzy. About 8:15 a.m. a U.S. team buggy raced to the back of the media centre, carrying Phil Mickelson. The buggy clipped the tennis court fence and back step of the media centre as it headed to the toilets at the side of the media tent.

Observers then saw the buggy emerge at the front of the centre, minus Mickelson. Whether it was a "toot emergency" or Mickelson stopping at the Getty Images hut beside the media tent, no one was quite sure. Only one thing was certain—Mickelson was desperate to get there.

Truth & Rumors: Lexi Thompson, 'I'm not the savior.'

Posted at 5:08 PM by Mick Rouse

After becoming the youngest player to win an LPGA event, 16-year-old Lexi Thompson emerged as the great hope for an LPGA Tour in need of a star. And although the tour approved Thompson's petition to forgo Q-school, granting her membership for the 2012 season, commissioner Michael Whan doesn't believe Lexi needs to be the LPGA's knight in shining armor.

"This is no offense to her, but we don't need Lexi to be the one any time soon," Whan says. "If she does become the one, great, we'll fan that flame. But when I see reporters say that, finally, Lexi is the great young American the LPGA needs, I find that hard to stomach. Do we just discount Paula Creamer, Michelle Wie, Morgan Pressel, Cristie Kerr, Stacy Lewis, Angela Stanford and Brittany Lincicome? And there are so many others.

We have never been as stocked with talent as we are right now. The talent pool from all over the world is stunning. And the fact people are looking for the next one while Yani (Tseng) is currently rewriting the record books is strange to me. I think it's fantastic that Lexi may turn out to be one of those true unique superstars. But I don't have to wait to write that story.

Yani is already writing it."

Thompson shares Whan's sentiments. Sitting down with Steve DiMeglio of USA Today, Lexi revealed that she is more focused on playing her best and learning the ropes during her first professional season, not trying to play the role of hero.

"There are so many great players out on the tour. There are so many great players the fans want to watch. I'm just going to go out there and do what I love and try and do my best."

"It's all going to be a learning process for me — where to stay, where to eat, how to play practice rounds. I just want to learn. I think I'm pretty prepared for it, but I know I'll be learning as I go."

As for the crown that has been placed upon her head by the fans and media?

"I'm not the savior. I don't even think about being a savior."

Adam Scott reunites with Ana Ivanovic

After splitting in 2010, Adam Scott and Ana Ivanovic have rekindled the flame. Not only was Ivanovic in Sydney last week to lend her support during the Australian Open, but the tennis star stepped out with Scott at the Presidents Cup gala dinner. Prior to the event, Scott's teammate Geoff Ogilvy tweeted the following picture, dubbing the pairing as "the glamour couple.

Scott-ivanovic

Wozzilroy has yet to comment on another golf/tennis power couple stepping into the spotlight.

Truth & Rumors: Dustin and Phil break up as match-play partners

Posted at 1:03 PM by Mike Walker

Dustin Johnson and Phil Mickelson are good friends whose practice-round money matches are often as entertaining as the tournament, but they won’t be paired together at this week’s Presidents Cup, Johnson said at a press conference Tuesday. Johnson and Mickelson lost both times they played together at the 2010 Ryder Cup.

Q. People were expecting more out of you and Phil, your partnership at The Ryder Cup; what happened there and did you expect to play with him again this week?

DUSTIN JOHNSON: Me and Phil will not be playing together this week. We do better playing against each other than with each other. We are good buddies, we love playing with each other. But as far as -- you know, some people, you just don't -- as Phil put it, we didn't have that good energy.

Q. Is that because you're too similar do you think?

DUSTIN JOHNSON: Yeah, we are, we are very similar. Especially the way we play and stuff. So we just didn't quite mesh well. Best-ball format or something, I think we are all right, you know, we do better when we are playing against each other.

Q. Tiger said the same thing.

DUSTIN JOHNSON: (Laughing). He probably would. I think you've got to have fun. That's the biggest thing is you've got to have fun out there. You've got to enjoy yourself, whether you're winning or whether you're down, you've still got to have fun and you've still got to just -- you've got to get along with the guy you're playing with. You know, kind of keep your head up, no matter if you're winning or losing, you need to go out and have a good time. I think that's the biggest thing in having a partner, we are all very good and we can all play with each other. If you don't necessarily have fun with the guy you're playing with, then it's just not going to be a good day.

Q. Do you have fun together?

DUSTIN JOHNSON: Yeah, we do, we have fun together, but we just didn't mesh well as partners. We mesh well as opponents.

Q. Any chance of being paired with Tiger?

DUSTIN JOHNSON: That is a possibility. I don't know if we are supposed to be saying who we are playing with yet.

Q. What do you think that would be like?

DUSTIN JOHNSON: Oh, it would be good. Obviously me and Tiger will be a great team if we do play together. It's up to Captain Couples whether he wants to put us together. But you know, anybody that plays with Tiger is going to be pretty good. He's playing well right now, hitting the ball great and driving it pretty straight. That's kind of what you have to do out here.

Steve Williams says his relationship with Tiger chilled after scandals
In an online video interview with Graham Bensinger, caddie Steve Williams said his friendship with Tiger Woods deteriorated quickly following Woods’s sex scandals in late 2009 and 2010.

“When we got back together at Augusta we didn’t click like we used to,” Williams said.

Woods fired Williams during the summer of 2011. Woods claimed he fired Williams in person, while Williams said Woods fired him over the phone. Asked about the different versions, Williams said, “I had my take on how it unfolded and he had his take on how it unfolded.”

You can watch the full interview below, but it took place before Williams's recent racial remarks about Woods at a Shanghai caddie banquet:

International Team bonds over bus breakdown
One of the disadvantages the International Team has in the Presidents Cup is that the team lacks the cohesion of the American side because the players come from so many different countries and they only play together once every two years. That’s why something like a team bus breaking down can help the players come together as a team. International team member Geoff Ogilvy explains:

Q. Just on one note away from that. Last night the restaurant bus, did you help direct traffic with Greg?

GEOFF OGILVY: Greg was out there, K.J. was out there. There were a few guys out there. It was very impressive. Quite a busy road near the city, Bridge Road. So you know where we were?

Q. Yeah.

GEOFF OGILVY: He was backing it out onto Bridge Road, which is quite impressive, and K.J. and Greg took control and played policeman and stood out in the road. The bus got out. It was very impressive, actually.

Q. How long did it go on for? Greg mentioned it in his press conference.

GEOFF OGILVY: 10 or 15 minutes it was one of those cool things that it was cool that it happened earlier in the week because everyone on the bus was laughing, and it's just going to be a funny story to tell along with a lot of other stuff that happens this week. It's fun that it happened early in the week, because it was a fun little incident.

Q. Team bonding too?

GEOFF OGILVY: I guess that's what happens when everyone gets out of the bus and kind of looks what's going on, and everyone gets back in the bus, and you back the bus up a 300 meter street back out onto a busy road. Guys jumping out of the bus and controlling traffic, it's a story to tell, isn't it?

Truth & Rumors: Tiger to promote nutrient supplement

Posted at 1:46 PM by Mike Walker

Tiger Woods signed a new endorsement deal with Fuse Science, according to a story on TigerWoods.com. The product is not on the market yet, but, according to Fuse Science, the company has developed a new delivery system to help athletes absorb supplemental nutrients “in a concentrated "DROP" form that is simply applied under the tongue.”

Fuse Science research and development team has engineered a faster and more efficient way to absorb nutrients when the body is at its highest demand. By combining pre, during, and post workout dosing athletes may find they can handle more intense workout with shorter recovery times.

Woods, who recently announced a partnership with Rolex, will be the company’s “primary spokesman in professional sports.” He lost sponsorships with AT&T, Accenture, Gillette, General Motors and Gatorade in 2010 following his sex scandals. The terms of the Woods's deal with Fuse Science were not disclosed.

"When I learned about Fuse Science's groundbreaking technology, I immediately understood that this will be a game-changer in how we live our lives every day," Woods said. "We will improve energy, nutrition and medication delivery in several global categories, and we will enhance every athlete's ability to perform at their natural best. This company is laying the foundation for some very significant things and after personally talking to them, I wanted to be Powered by Fuse."

"This is a very big day for our company and what it means to be Powered by Fuse," added Brian Tuffin, president and chief operating officer. "Our partnership with the world's best is an enabler to have a worldwide impact sooner than later. Tiger recognizes the significance of the journey we're on as a company and wants to be part of our growth while leverage the technology to make a difference globally."

"Beyond sports, this technology applies in so many ways," added Tiger. "The long-term potential is significant. To me, that's something much bigger than golf."

Couples leads Norman in captain’s bracket at Aussie Open

The captains of the U.S. and International Presidents Cup teams still have plenty of game, if the first-round results of the Australian Open are any indication. The 56-year-old Norman shot a 1-under 71 to tie for 42nd place, and his American counterpart Couples, 51, shot a 5-under 67 to finish T4. ESPN’s Bob Harig talked to Couples after his round

"This is probably the best ball-striking round I had all year," said Couples, 51, who plays most of his golf on the Champions Tour -- although he tied for seventh at the Northern Trust Open and 15th at the Masters.

"On the front side I hit it close every hole. I played really well. I don't know if I can accomplish that tomorrow, but today was a very, very good round. I'm not just here to get ready for next week. I want to compete. It sounds stupid, but at any age I think I can still play, although it's a lot easier on the Champions Tour."

Hall-of-famer Mickelson still wants 50 wins, career slam

A sprightly hall of famer at 41, Phil Mickelson said he still has plenty of goals to accomplish before he’s done, including getting to 50 career wins (he’s at 39), at his hall of fame announcement in Singapore on Wednesday.

I'd like to get to that magical number of 50 that only a few guys have gotten to as far as total tournaments, but also I think that finally getting a U.S. Open would mean a lot to me as well as a British Open, which would complete the career slam. I came very close last year at Royal St. George's to getting that British. I've had five seconds in the U.S. Open; I've been very close. And I'm going to try to take that knowledge I've gained over the years that have led to those good performances and see if I can get over the hump and win those. I think that would be two special monumental feats for me to accomplish.

Truth and Rumors: Rory says firing agent was ‘difficult’

Posted at 11:52 AM by Mike Walker

Rory McIlroy said his decision to split with his manager Chubby Chandler was difficult, but that he thought a new environment would help him play better, according to an interview with the BBC (audio here). McIlroy announced he was splitting with Chandler and the ISM agency in late October and moving to Dublin-based Horizon Sports Management.

“It’s a decision that I didn’t take lightly. I thought long and hard about it, and had a lot of chats with my mum and dad. Sometimes to forward in your career you just need to make decisions and I just thought it was a decision I need to make.”

McIlroy added that he made the switch because he thought it would help his game.

“It’s about me trying to play my best golf and that’s all there is to it. I feel like with a new environment around me might enable me to play even better.”

He said that it was difficult to fire Chandler, whom he first met as a teenager.

“Chubby’s been with me since Day 1 and it was very difficult for me. I’m very close to him and remain very close to him. It was purely a business decision and nothing personal at all.”

So does that make everything clear to you? Me, neither. Somewhere Tiger Woods is nodding.

PGA Tour demands Aussie news sites not report live Prez Cup results

Australian news services are fighting back against PGA Tour restrictions on live reporting from the Presidents Cup. Tom Dick of The Sydney Morning Herald has the details

The American organizers of this month's Presidents Cup tournament in Melbourne, the PGA Tour, have demanded Australian news organizations delay posting scores online by half an hour and not provide readers with real-time coverage.

Under its rules, TV stations would also be banned from showing any footage until Fox Sports and Channel Nine, who hold the broadcast rights, have finished their coverage. Even then, other broadcasters will be allowed to show only three minutes a day if they accept the PGA Tour conditions, despite Australian copyright law protecting news reporting.

However, those Australian media organizations -- never known as shrinking violets -- aren’t rolling over for tour officials.

News Ltd has labelled the rules "completely unacceptable", and it has been joined by Fairfax Media, owner of the Herald, and several news agencies in refusing to sign the terms on which PGA Tour allows their journalists and photographers to cover the tournament.

Ian Poulter blames new house for poor play this season

Ian Poulter is in Shanghai this week for the HSBC Champions event, but he said the reason for his middling play this season is that his mind has been on the house he’s building in Orlando, according to Oliver Brown of The Telegraph (UK).

“There’s no getting away from it, I’ve played terribly,” he said. “It has all been way too much. I’ve had too much going on in my mind. So, I need to get rid of all that ---- and concentrate on playing golf again.

“I have been building a house and I won’t be moving in until March. It’s my house, and whether it’s a plug socket or the smallest furnishing, I have to make the final decisions. It’s my house — I don’t want someone else to choose something for it.

"That’s a time-consuming project and it eats away at time when I could be doing other stuff.”

Truth & Rumors: Stricker defends Tiger pick for Prez Cup

Posted at 11:17 AM by Mick Rouse

Greg Norman created a brouhaha when he criticized Fred Couples for selecting Tiger Woods as a captain’s pick for the upcoming Presidents Cup. Steve Stricker, though, is defending both his captain and teammate. Speaking with Gary D’Amato of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel, Stricker said:

"I’m for it. I think it’s a good thing. I don’t know why Greg said what he did. He did basically the same thing with Adam Scott a couple years ago when Adam wasn’t playing well. It kind of turned Adam's game around. So I don’t know where that came from.”

The Stricker-Woods team has had great success at both the 2009 Presidents Cup and the 2010 Ryder Cup, going 4-0 and 2-1, respectively, in the team portions of the events. According to Stricker, he has been in touch with Tiger and is confident that his former partner will silence many of the critics once he hits the course in Australia.

"I talk to Tiger through texting every now and then. He’s really excited. We’re looking forward to it. I think he’ll be ready, too. He’ll find a way to get it done. When you play him one on one, he’ll find a way. Just like at the Ryder Cup last year. He trounced the guy he was playing. He loves match play."

Yani Tseng says she would like to play a PGA Tour event

Yani Tseng has emerged as the most dominant force in golf this season, picking up her 11th victory of the year at the Suzhou Taihu Ladies Open. Speaking with the Chinese media, Tseng expressed interest in testing her skills out on the PGA Tour in the future:

“If an opportunity presents itself, I would like to play in a PGA tournament to learn more from male golfers. I wouldn’t care about the results because I’d just want to enjoy the feeling of playing with guys and learning from them to further improve my skills.”

Hog wild

A gang of wild boars have inhabited the Suntree Country Club in Melbourne, Fla., tearing up the golf course in the process. Local news station WFTV has the story

The hogs are tearing up the grass along a number of holes on the golf course at the Suntree Country Club near North Wickham Road.

Residents say they spotted one boar that appeared to be 300 lbs. with two and a half inch cutters, which are like small tusks.

"They are razor sharp," said wildlife trapper James Dean, about the boars.  "They are coming into the backyards on the golf courses and rutting up the ground, and I mean tearing it up with their snout to get grubworms, insects, snakes. They just get down with their tusks and keep going and going and going.”

One resident of the golf course community described the mess he found in his back yard as a “two-foot deep, eight foot by eight foot, swimming pool.”

Trappers have already caught 17 wild boars but believe there to be at least six more of the hogs in the area. Sounds like a job for Bagdad, Fla., native Boo Weekley.

Truth & Rumors: Tiger has his strength, explosiveness back

Posted at 4:24 PM by Mike Walker

At a news conference on Tuesday where he was announced as a Presidents Cup captain's pick, Tiger Woods said he’s practicing regularly and his strength and explosiveness have returned to his golf swing.

We're practicing very hard up at Medalist, and I'm playing as much as I possibly can, something that I hadn't not done all summer, because I hadn't been cleared to do it. Now I have the clearance to do that. My training sessions are great. Strength has come back. My explosiveness has come back through my training, and now just trying to get my feels back, and it feels great.

Sean has come down a few times, and we've worked, and we had wonderful sessions. And really looking forward to playing next week at the Fry's, and after that, I'm playing at the Aussie Open in Sydney, and really looking forward to getting my game rounded for The Presidents Cup.

Woods also said he is looking forward to playing again. Woods missed the cut at the PGA Championship in August and failed to qualify for the FedEx Cup playoffs. Next week’s Frys.com Open in Northern California will be his first event since the PGA.

I am looking to get out there and compete, no doubt. That's something that I have pretty much -- and I played two events, but didn't play very well in those few events at Akron and the PGA. Really excited to get back out there and compete, and knowing that I'm finally healthy enough to do it now, and I've practiced, something I had not done in preparation for Akron and the PGA. But now that I've actually practiced, I've gotten even stronger in my lifting sessions, so things it are definitely shaping up quickly.

I'm playing in two stroke-play events prior to that to get myself ready for The Presidents Cup, and granted, it is match play, and you know, we as Presidents Cuppers, we play every day, which is very different than The Ryder Cup. Every player must play every day. So knowing that going down there, we are going to be basically playing all four matches, it's fun. It's something I'm looking forward to it, and hopefully Stricks is healthy enough and Mr. Couples will be nice enough to put us together again, something I'm looking toward to and hope that will happen.

If Woods doesn’t enjoy the Frys.com Open, Justin Timberlake said he’d love to have Woods in the field at the Justin Timberlake Shriners Hospitals for Children Open in Las Vegas next year, according to The Las Vegas Sun

When Timberlake first started working with the event four years ago, he tried using his celebrity to contact several top golfers for commitments to play with aspirations of enhancing the event.

“I reached to a lot of golfers,” he said. “You know, you want the field to be as big and bad as possible.”

But with Woods, Timberlake said he didn’t want to bother the world’s most sought-after golfer during his rehabilitation.

“I was just trying to be respectful of that,” Timberlake said. “For someone that’s dealing with an injury I don’t want to make them feel terrible because they can’t make it.”

Keegan Bradley disappointed about not making Presidents Cup team

PGA Championship winner Keegan Bradley is a thoroughly 21st century athlete so he responded to news that he didn’t get a Presidents Cup pick on Twitter.

Bradley

Bradley should still make sure his passport is in good standing. U.S. Captain Fred Couples said that if Steve Stricker can’t play due to injury (he has a herniated disk) then Bradley will take his spot.

Rory McIlroy’s next goal: Learn to win with his B-game

Ian Chadband of The Telegraph (UK) checks in with Rory McIlroy after his star-making 2011 season and learns that McIlroy is now focused on turning his good days into great ones.

“When I’m 100 per cent, I won the US Open by eight shots, was six shots ahead in the final round in Dubai and, after being on the cut line, shot 16 under at the weekend to win Quail Hollow by four. So when you’re on, you kind of feel untouchable. I'd take it if this happened to me four or five times a year.

“But it’s being able to win when you’re not playing your best; that’s the secret I want to find. Turning those second, third and fourth placed finishes, when I’m not playing my best, into wins is basically what I’m trying to do now.

“On the course, in my mind I think I’ve changed a little bit too. Everyone says ‘let it happen, don’t force it’ but I don’t think that’s the right way to go for me. I’ve got to say to myself ‘look, I’m good enough, I’m going to make this happen and win’ instead of shrugging ‘oh, we’ll just go out and see what happens’. I’m getting a little bit more ruthless and maybe there’s a bit more self-belief too.”
