Great golf and great views in Killington, VT

Posted at 12:16 PM by Anne Szeker

I recently visited the Killington, Vt., area. Yes, Killington, in summer. And while golf is not necessarily the first thing that comes to mind when you think about the Green Mountain state, maybe it should be.  I was traveling with my family –- we range from the ‘several times a week’ golfer to the ‘this will be the only time I play all year’ golfer -- and found several courses that we all enjoyed.

The best was Green Mountain National. It was lush and green, and I can only imagine what it looks like during the fall, their peak season, when the leaves are turning.  The starter recommended -– and I’m glad he did -– that we make a stop at the very back tees on the 16th before playing the hole. Probably the highest point on the course, it offers a great view of the Green Mountains.  And the course itself wasn’t bad either!  A really interesting, hilly layout with tree-lined fairways and big greens. They were relatively busy, but each hole is secluded enough that you almost feel as if you’re out there alone.

Another solid, slightly cheaper option is Woodstock Country Club. The course is in the Kedron Valley, making for a fairly open setup. That’s not to say the course doesn’t present its challenges -– the starter mentioned to my group before we teed off that we’d be surprised at how much water was on the course.  He wasn’t kidding.  Several of the greens are surrounded by creeks, making any shots short of the green that much more painful. Make sure you bring your ball retriever -- you can at least score a few GOLF.com logo-ed balls that I left behind.
